This document describes the Pennington Aquagarden Universal Hydroponic & Aquaponic Water Pump, designed for both submersible and inline use in various hydroponic and aquaponic setups, as well as for fountains, waterfalls, and ponds. It is suitable for both fresh water and marine environments.
Function Description:
The Pennington Aquagarden Water Pump is a centrifugal pump featuring a magnetic impeller system driven by a watertight synchronous motor. Its primary function is to circulate water in hydroponic and aquaponic systems, as well as in ornamental water features. The pump is designed for continuous operation and offers adjustable flow control.

- Maximum Flow: 1000 g/h
- Maximum Lift: 10'2"
- Pump dimensions: 6½" x 3½" x 5¼"
All models are supplied with a grounding conductor and a grounding-type attachment plug. They are designed to be connected only to a properly grounded, grounding-type receptacle and must be protected by a Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (GFCI). The pump is equipped with a thermal cut-out that temporarily switches off the pump in case of overheating and may automatically restart. It is crucial not to run the pump dry, as this can cause irreparable damage.
Usage Features:
The pump is designed for ease of installation, described as "Easy to Install" with a "Two Year Guarantee."
- Submersible Use: The pump should be located on a firm and level base, with a water depth of at least 4" but no more than 7'2". It comes with various hose tails (stepped hose tail, ½" hose tail, GHT adaptor) and a low water inlet adaptor with optional pre-filter foam. A flow control valve is included for adjusting water flow.
- Inline Use: When used inline, it is recommended to install a ball valve in front of the inlet hose tail for easy shut-off during maintenance. An impeller cover locking screw should be installed to prevent the impeller cover from twisting open during operation.
- Flow Control: The pump features an adjustable flow control valve. Turning the valve counter-clockwise decreases flow, while turning it clockwise increases flow. The stepped hose tail can be cut to remove unwanted sections (1"/25 mm or ¾"/20 mm) to optimize hose connection.
- Hose Recommendation: For optimal performance, a smooth bore (not corrugated) pipe should be used for the outlet hose, installed over the shortest possible distance with no kinks or bends. A smooth bore clear hose or heavy-duty black hose is recommended.
- Safety: The pump is suitable for household indoor and outdoor use but has not been investigated for use in swimming pools or marine areas (though it is suitable for fresh or marine water systems). It must be mounted at a height greater than 1 foot from the ground surface when used outdoors and installed only to covered Class A GFCI receptacles with a weatherproof enclosure. The power supply cord is permanently connected and sealed; if damaged, the pump must not be used. The cord should never be used to lift the pump.
Maintenance Features:
The pump requires minimal and periodic maintenance to ensure longevity and validate the guarantee.
- Routine Maintenance (when flow is visibly reduced):
- Switch off electricity.
- Remove the pump from the reservoir (do not lift by the cable).
- Remove the front of the pre-filter cage by depressing the button and pulling it apart.
- Wash the cage thoroughly in fresh water.
- Remove and wash the pre-filter sponge thoroughly in fresh water.
- Monthly Maintenance:
- Perform routine maintenance (steps 1 and 2 above).
- Remove the impeller cover by turning it counter-clockwise to release the lock, then pull it away from the pump motor (remove the impeller cover locking screw if installed).
- Remove the impeller from the pump motor.
- Wash the impeller and the impeller chamber with plenty of fresh water.
- Annual Maintenance:
- Dismantle the pump and examine all parts for wear or damage.
- Replace any parts showing obvious wear or damage.
- Pay particular attention to the cable entry point and the cable itself; if any sign of damage is present, the pump should be discarded.
- Winter Storage:
- If the pump is used in an outdoor reservoir during winter, ensure it is fully immersed and cannot freeze solid.
- If not used during winter, follow the annual maintenance procedure and store it frost-free in a house or garage until spring. No additional steps are needed for indoor reservoirs.
Troubleshooting:
The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues:
- Low flow from pump: Check for blockages, leaks, crushed or kinked pipes, minimize pumping height (head), and use the largest diameter, smoothest bore hose over the shortest distance with minimal fittings.
- No flow from pump: Check power supply, fuse, and wiring. If the pump overheated, the thermal overload might have temporarily switched it off.
Guarantee:
The product comes with a two-year guarantee against defects in material and workmanship under normal usage from the date of purchase. The guarantee does not cover improper use, negligence, lack of maintenance, or accidental damage. If a manufacturing fault occurs within this period, the pump will be repaired or replaced free of charge. Liability is limited to product replacement. The guarantee is not transferable and excludes the pump impeller (which may require annual replacement) and consumable spares like pre-filter foams.
