Do you have a question about the Pepperl+Fuchs ICDM-RX/TCP-DB9/RJ45-PM and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The ICDM-RX/TCP is a versatile device designed for factory automation, offering robust installation, configuration, and management capabilities for serial devices over Ethernet networks. It supports various models, including those with DB9, RJ45, and screw terminal connectors, and can be mounted on DIN rails or in racks.

Function Description

The ICDM-RX/TCP acts as a serial device server, enabling serial ports to be configured as COM ports (Windows), tty ports (Linux), or TCP/IP socket ports. This allows serial devices to communicate with applications over an Ethernet network using TCP/IP socket communications addressing or serial tunneling. It also supports UDP mode for faster data transmission or broadcast capabilities.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Connectivity: 10/100 ETHERNET ports. Some models feature dual Ethernet ports for daisy-chaining.
  • Serial Port Types: Supports RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 (2-wire and 4-wire) serial interfaces.
  • Power Supply:
    • DIN Rail Models: Typically 5-30VDC input, 100 mA (Min) @ 24VDC, 2.5 W. Some models support redundant power supplies.
    • PM Models: Typically 5VDC or 5-30VDC input, with specific current and power ratings depending on the model (e.g., 420 mA @ 5VDC, 2.1 W for DB9/RJ45-PM2; 200 mA @ 24VDC, 4.8 W for 4DB9/2RJ45-PM; 290 mA @ 24VDC, 6.96 W for 8DB9/2RJ45-PM).
  • LED Indicators:
    • Status/PWR (Amber): Lit when powered and boot cycle complete; flashes during booting (approx. 15 seconds).
    • Link/Act (Red/Green): Lit for working Ethernet connection.
    • Duplex (Red): Lit for full-duplex activity.
    • 100 (Red): Lit for 100 MB Ethernet connection; off for 10 MB connection.
    • TX/RX (Yellow/Green): Lit for receiving (yellow) and active data transmission (green) on serial ports (not available on DIN rail models).
  • Security Features:
    • Secure Data Mode: Encrypts serial port data streams using SSL/TLS, disables UDP and RFC1006 access, disables MAC-mode access to serial ports, requires SSL encryption for NS-Link TCP connections (Port 4606), and uses SSH for diagnostic log (Port 4607).
    • Secure Config Mode: Disables unencrypted access to administrative and diagnostic functions (e.g., Telnet, unencrypted web server via Port 80), allows encrypted web server access via Port 443 (HTTPS), and ignores administrative commands received via proprietary TCP/MAC driver protocols.
    • SSH Server: Requires password authentication, enabled/disabled independently of Secure Data/Config modes, uses third-party MatrixSSH library.
    • SSL/TLS Protocols: Supports SSLv3, TLSv1.0, TLS1.1, and TLS1.2 for encryption and authentication using RSA certificates.
    • Cipher Suites: Supports various combinations of Public Key (RSA, DHE, DHA), Authentication (RSA), Cipher (3DES, RC4, AES128, AES256, NULL), and MAC (SHA, MD5).
    • Password Authentication: Configurable via web page, Telnet, or SSH.
    • Key and Certificate Management: Allows uploading custom RSA Key Pairs, RSA Server Certificates, DH Key Pairs, and Client Authentication Certificates for enhanced security.
    • IP Address Filtering: Can restrict TCP connections to specific IP address blocks.
  • Default Settings:
    • IP Address: 192.168.250.250
    • Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
    • Gateway Address: 192.168.250.1
    • Default Port Setting: RS-232
    • Bootloader Timeout: 15 seconds

Usage Features

  • PortVision DX: A Windows-based utility for automatic detection, configuration (IP address, network settings), firmware updates, and management of ICDM-RX/TCP units. It allows creating sessions, sorting devices, exporting device lists, and organizing devices into folders.
  • Web Browser Interface (SocketServer/NS-Link): Provides a web-based interface for configuring network settings, serial port parameters, security features (passwords, keys, certificates), email notifications, and RFC1006 settings.
  • NS-Link Device Driver: Available for Windows and Linux operating systems, enabling serial ports to function as virtual COM or tty ports.
  • Telnet/SSH Sessions: Allows command-line access for configuration, diagnostics, and monitoring, including RedBoot commands for low-level system management.
  • Serial Port Configuration: Individual serial ports can be configured for various communication modes (RS-232, RS-422, RS-485) and features like RTS Toggle Options for RS-485.
  • Daisy-Chaining: Models with dual Ethernet ports can be daisy-chained to extend network reach, adhering to IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standards.

Maintenance Features

  • Rebooting: Devices can be rebooted via PortVision DX, the web interface (System | Reboot), or Telnet (reset command). DIN rail models also have a physical Reset/Restore switch.
  • Firmware Updates: SocketServer firmware can be uploaded via PortVision DX or the web interface (System | Update Firmware).
  • Bootloader Management: Bootloader version can be checked and updated via PortVision DX or RedBoot commands.
  • Configuration File Management: Configuration settings can be saved to and loaded from .dc or .cmtl files using PortVision DX or the web interface, facilitating deployment of multiple units with similar settings.
  • Restoring Defaults: Serial port settings and other device properties can be restored to factory defaults via the Windows Drivers Management Console or the web interface (System | Restore Defaults).
  • Troubleshooting Tools:
    • Port Monitor (PMon2): A Windows application within PortVision DX to check communication, port status (OPEN/CLOSED), and statistics like actual throughput, TxTotal, RxTotal, Overrun Errors, Framing Errors, and Parity Errors.
    • Test Terminal (WCom2): A Windows application within PortVision DX for sending/receiving test data and performing loopback tests on serial ports to verify functionality and signal integrity.
    • LED Diagnostics: Status, Link/Act, Duplex, 100, TX/RX LEDs provide visual cues for power, network connection, and data activity, aiding in quick diagnosis.
    • Verbose Event Log: An option to log additional ICDM-RX/TCP information for detailed troubleshooting.
    • RedBoot Command Overview: Provides a comprehensive list of commands for low-level diagnostics and configuration, accessible via serial, Telnet, or SSH connections.
    • Security Feature Removal: Procedures are outlined for removing security settings, including password and authentication levels, typically requiring serial connection access to RedBoot.
