Do you have a question about the Phoenix Contact PSI-MODEM-GSM/ETH and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The PSI-MODEM-GSM/ETH is a high-performance GPRS/EDGE modem designed for industrial Ethernet networks, enabling secure data transmission over GSM networks. It supports quad-band technology (850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz GSM networks), allowing for global use. The modem integrates a firewall and Virtual Private Network (VPN) support to protect applications from unauthorized access. Remote stations can be integrated into an IP network via a GPRS/EDGE connection or by dialing a phone number. The device prioritizes EMC, electrical isolation, and surge protection for reliable and safe communication. It also monitors GPRS/EDGE service and GSM network quality, sending messages or reestablishing connections if necessary.

Key Features:

  • Quad-band support: Operates on 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 1900 MHz (EGSM) frequencies.
  • GPRS/EDGE capabilities: Supports General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) for packet-based wireless access.
  • Integrated TCP/IP stack: Facilitates network communication.
  • Virtual permanent line: Connects networks via GPRS.
  • Integrated firewall: Provides Stateful Packet Inspection for enhanced security, allowing rules to be defined for incoming and outgoing traffic.
  • VPN support: Enables secure communication via IPsec with X.509 certificates for authentication, supporting 3DES or AES encryption, MD5 or SHA-1 hash algorithms, Tunnel mode, Quick mode, and Main mode.
  • Wide supply voltage range: Operates from 10 V DC to 30 V DC.
  • Extended temperature range: Functions reliably from -25°C to +60°C.
  • High-quality electrical isolation: Ensures safety between VCC and Ethernet.
  • Integrated surge protection: Protects against electrical surges.
  • Easy configuration: Achieved via web-based management (WBM).

Technical Specifications:

  • Power Supply: 10 V DC to 30 V DC via COMBICON plug-in screw terminal block. Nominal current consumption is < 360 mA at 24 V, and standby current consumption is < 90 mA at 24 V.
  • Ethernet Interface: RJ45 female connector, shielded, supporting 10/100 Mbps transmission speed over 100 m (twisted pair, shielded). Supported protocols include TCP/IP, UDP, TFTP, HTTP, MODBUS TCP, PPP, PROFINET, EtherNet IP, CHAP, ARP, DHCP, BOOTP, SNMP, RIP, RARP.
  • GSM/GPRS: Transmission power is 2 W at 850/900 MHz and 1 W at 1800/1900 MHz. SIM interface supports 1.8 V and 3 V SIM cards. GPRS Class 12, Class B, Coding scheme CS1-CS4. EDGE (EGPRS) multislot Class 10.
  • Antenna Connection: 50 Ω impedance SMA female connector.
  • Housing: ME 35 with 5-pos. bus contact and ground contact, made of PA 6.6-FR, VO, green. Dimensions are 99 mm x 35 mm x 120 mm, weighing 237 g.
  • Environmental: IP20 degree of protection. Vibration resistance according to DIN EN 60068-2-6 (5g, 1.5 h each in x, y, and z direction). Shock test according to DIN EN 60068-2-27 (15g, 11 ms half-sine shock pulse for operation; 30g, 11 ms half-sine shock pulse for storage). Free fall according to IEC 60068-2-32 from 1 m (without packaging).
  • CE Conformance: According to R&TTE Directive 1999/5/EC.

Usage Features:

  • Web-based Management (WBM): The primary interface for configuration. Accessible via a standard web browser (e.g., Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Apple Safari) by entering the modem's IP address (default: 192.168.0.1).
  • User Levels: Two user levels: "user" (read-only access to device information) and "admin" (full access to all areas). It is recommended to change the default password ("admin") during initial configuration.
  • SIM Card: Supports 1.8 V and 3 V SIM cards. A 4 or 5-digit PIN code can protect the SIM card. A packet data connection (GPRS or EDGE) is required for core functions (VPN router).
  • Switching Inputs/Outputs: Six digital switching inputs (10-30 V DC) and four short-circuit-proof switching outputs (max. 50 mA at 10-30 V DC).
  • Remote Configuration: WBM can be accessed externally via the mobile phone network or external network if enabled, allowing for remote maintenance.
  • Network Address Translation (NAT): Allows redirection of incoming data packets to internal IP addresses based on port numbers.
  • Real Time Clock (RTC): Time and date can be set manually or synchronized with an NTP server. The modem can act as an NTP server for locally connected devices.
  • CIDR Support: Firewall and NAT rules can specify IP address areas using CIDR format for flexible network segmentation.

Maintenance Features:

  • Reset Button: A concealed reset button allows resetting the modem's IP address to the factory default (192.168.0.1). This requires disconnecting the Ethernet cable, pressing the button, and reconnecting the cable while holding the button for 5 seconds.
  • Firmware Update: Updates for the GSM engine, modem firmware, and web-based management can be installed via WBM. Updates provide enhanced functions and product improvements. Files can be downloaded from www.phoenixcontact.net/download.
  • Reboot: The modem can be restarted manually via WBM ("Reboot NOW!") or configured for a daily reboot at a specified time. Regular reboots can help reestablish data connections and protect against provider-initiated connection aborts.
  • AT Commands: An "AT Commands" option is available for servicing purposes to access the GSM engine, but it has no significance for normal use.
  • LED Indicators:
    • VCC (Green): Steady light indicates supply voltage is present.
    • RD (Yellow): Receive data from GSM connection.
    • TD (Green): Transmit data to GSM connection.
    • ALR (Red): Steady light for successful alarm, flashing for sending alarm, quickly flashing for unsent alarm, off for no alarm.
    • NET (Yellow): Steady light for very good network reception, flashing for good reception, quickly flashing for moderate reception, off for no or very poor reception.
    • SIM (Red): Steady light for no SIM card, flashing for no PIN code, off for SIM card present and PIN entered.
    • AA (Yellow): Automatic answer, flashes during selective call acceptance.
    • VPN (Green): VPN tunnel active.
    • ACT (Yellow): Ethernet data transmission.
    • LNK (Green): Ethernet link established.
