Overview

The PIAA S-RF Series is a range of auxiliary lighting products designed to enhance visibility and safety for motorized vehicles. These lamps are intended for use in challenging driving conditions such as rain, fog, or snow, where normal visibility is hampered. The product line includes various lamp units, specifically S-RF6, S-RF9, S-RF20, S-RF30, S-RF40, and S-RF50, each designed to provide extra high-beam illumination.

Function Description

The primary function of the PIAA S-RF Series lamps is to provide supplementary lighting, improving the driver's ability to see and be seen in adverse weather conditions. When properly installed and aimed, these driving lights project a powerful beam forward, extending the driver's visual range beyond what standard headlamps offer. The S-RF50 model, due to its higher operation wattage, incorporates an additional fuse unit within its lamp wire harness for enhanced safety and protection.

The system operates via a relay harness, which ensures efficient power delivery to the lamps and protects the vehicle's electrical system. A dedicated switch allows the driver to activate and deactivate the lights. The design emphasizes secure mounting, with options for both side and bottom bracket installations, ensuring the lamps remain stable even under vehicle vibration.

Usage Features

The PIAA S-RF Series lamps are designed for specific usage scenarios and come with important guidelines to ensure safe and effective operation.

  • Intended Use: These lamps are specifically for motorized vehicle use and should not be used for any other purpose. They are ideal for improving visibility in rain, fog, or snow, but not for normal driving conditions.
  • Switch Operation: The switch should only be operated when local laws permit. Drivers are cautioned against operating the switch while driving if it is not legally allowed.
  • Battery Management: To prevent battery drain, it is crucial to turn off the lamp when the engine is not running.
  • Beam Aiming: Proper aiming is critical for optimal performance and to avoid dazzling other drivers. The lamps should be adjusted so the beam shines at least 40m in front of the vehicle and is slightly angled to the right to prevent direct glare to oncoming traffic. Visual aiming involves setting the center of the beam's hot spot 1.5 inches (4cm) below the lamp center at 25 feet (7.6m) with the lamp facing straight forward.
  • Driving Light Etiquette: Driving lights should never be the sole forward light source and should only be used in conjunction with the headlamp high beams. They must not be used into oncoming traffic.
  • Mounting Flexibility: The lamps are designed to be mounted upright, but the mounting brackets can be rotated to allow for hanging pendant mounting, offering versatility in installation.
  • Installation Procedures: The installation process involves connecting the relay harness to the battery, routing the switch through the engine firewall into the vehicle's cab, and securely mounting the lamp unit. Detailed instructions are provided for both side and bottom bracket installations, including torque specifications for mounting nuts to ensure secure attachment.
  • Electrical Connections: When connecting to the battery, the positive (+) terminal should always be connected first. Care must be taken to avoid simultaneously touching both positive and negative terminals to prevent electrical shock. Rubber gloves are recommended during these procedures.
  • Pre-Installation Checks: Before starting any work, ensure the engine compartment is cool. Avoid working on hot engine parts like the radiator or oil cooler.
  • Post-Installation Checks: After installation, verify that the relay harness does not contact moving engine parts or sections that emit extreme heat. Use wire ties to secure harnesses within the engine compartment. Confirm that all wiring is correct and the lamp functions properly. If the lamp fails to activate, troubleshooting steps are provided.

Maintenance Features

Maintaining the PIAA S-RF Series lamps involves regular checks and adherence to specific guidelines to ensure their longevity and safe operation.

  • Secure Installation: Regularly check for any loose screws or bolts that hold the lamp in place. If any are found, tighten them securely immediately. Loose parts can lead to excess vibration, potentially shortening the lamp's life or causing physical damage to the lamp or vehicle.
  • Harness Integrity: Inspect the lamp and switch harnesses for any damage, such as cracks in the lens or damage to the cord covering. If any damage is found, replace the affected component immediately. Avoid needless disassembly of the lamp or switch harness, as this can cause failure.
  • Storage: If the lamp and/or switch harness are removed for safekeeping, wipe away all dust or grime and store them in a moisture-free environment.
  • Electrical System Checks: Periodically verify the integrity of the wiring system. If a short circuit occurs, which can be caused by wires caught in the assembly or gaps in the sleeve connected to the lamp harness, inspect and replace any damaged components immediately.
  • Fuse Replacement: The manual provides instructions for fuse replacement procedures in case of a short circuit or lamp malfunction. This involves checking the fuse located on the vehicle's wiring system and the fuse for the switch harness.
  • Avoiding Rapid Cycling: Repeatedly turning the lamp off and on should be avoided, as this can reduce the overall life of the LED.
  • Engine Start-up: To prevent loading extra voltage to the lamps, turn the switch off when starting the engine, especially in vehicles that produce a high voltage electric charge during start-up.
  • Cleaning: Keep the lamp body, lens, and rim clean. Ensure they do not touch the bumper or other plastic parts, as such contact could lead to deformation of plastic components.
  • Disposal: When replacing the harness and switch, dispose of them as non-combustible items.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual includes a comprehensive troubleshooting section to address common issues such as the lamp not activating, switch illumination not lighting up, or the LED suddenly failing. This section guides users through checking wiring, connections, fuses, and switch operation to diagnose and resolve problems.
