Overview

The Platinum HEALTH Carousel Sliding Bath Bench with Swivel Seat, models PHB3300/PHB3400G, is designed to provide a safe and comfortable bathing experience, particularly for individuals who may have difficulty stepping into and out of a bathtub. This device facilitates transfers into and out of the tub by allowing the user to sit on the chair outside the tub, slide into the tub, and then slide back out.

Function Description:

The primary function of this bath bench is to assist users with limited mobility in safely transferring into and out of a bathtub. It features a sliding mechanism that allows the chair to move along horizontal rails, extending from outside the tub to inside. A swivel seat further enhances ease of use, enabling the user to rotate the chair to face different directions during transfer and bathing. The design prioritizes user safety and comfort throughout the bathing process.

Usage Features:

The Carousel Sliding Bath Bench incorporates several features to ensure a user-friendly and secure experience:

  • Sliding Mechanism: The chair slides along horizontal rails. To engage the sliding function, a gray button is pushed, allowing the chair to move from outside the tub to inside, and vice versa. It locks into place at the end of its travel, both inside and outside the tub, providing stability.
  • Swivel Seat: A red lever allows the seat to rotate, locking into place every 90 degrees. This feature is crucial for transfers, as it enables the user to face away from the tub while sitting down, then rotate to face into the tub once seated. This minimizes twisting and strain during transfers.
  • Adjustable Legs: The legs of the bath bench are adjustable in half-inch increments. This allows users to customize the height of the chair to best accommodate different floor heights and their personal preferences. Proper adjustment ensures the seat is level from front to back and side to side, which is critical for stability and safety.
  • Safety Belt: A securely attached safety belt is a mandatory feature for this device. It must be fastened snugly around the user's hips before use to prevent falls and serious injury, especially during transfers and while the chair is in motion. The manual explicitly states that the chair should never be used without the safety belt attached.
  • Raiseable Armrests: For easier transfers, the armrests of the Carousel chair can be raised. A red button at the bottom front of each armrest unlocks it, allowing it to be moved out of the way. Once the user is seated, the armrests can be lowered back into position until they lock, providing additional support and security during bathing.
  • Step-by-Step Operation: The manual provides clear, sequential steps for operation:
    1. Initial Positioning: The chair is slid along the rails until it locks into place outside the tub, facing away from the tub.
    2. User Seating and Rotation: The user sits on the chair, and the safety belt is fastened. The chair is then rotated to face into the room and toward the user for seating, then rotated again to face the tub.
    3. Transfer into Tub: With the user seated and the safety belt secured, the chair is rotated while the user lifts one leg into the tub at a time. Once fully rotated and locked into position with the user facing the front of the tub, the gray button under the seat is pressed to disengage the chair, allowing it to slide along the horizontal rails into the tub. It then locks into place at the end of its travel inside the tub.
    4. Bathing: Once inside the tub, the user can bathe normally.
    5. Transfer out of Tub: To exit, the process is reversed. The gray button is pressed to disengage the chair, which then slides toward the outside of the tub until it locks. The red lever is pressed to rotate the chair, and the user lifts one leg out at a time. Once the chair is fully rotated and locked into place, the safety belt can be unfastened, and the user can stand and exit the chair.
  • Reversible Design: The chair's design allows for 360-degree rotation and can be used with both right-hand and left-hand tub openings, making it completely reversible and adaptable to various bathroom layouts.
  • Important Safety Information: The manual emphasizes critical safety guidelines, including never using the device with individuals who are severely mentally, cognitively, physically, or vision-compromised. It also stresses the importance of always attaching the safety belt, never leaving a compromised user unattended, and ensuring the legs are properly adjusted for a level seat.

Maintenance Features:

While the manual primarily focuses on assembly and operation, it also touches upon troubleshooting, which can be considered a form of maintenance guidance:

  • Troubleshooting Sliding Difficulty: If the chair does not slide easily or smoothly, the recommended solution is to apply a light lubricant, specifically WD-40, to the horizontal rails that the chair slides on. This suggests that periodic lubrication might be beneficial to maintain smooth operation.
  • Troubleshooting Unlevel Chair: If the chair is not completely level in the shower or bathtub, the solution involves adjusting the rubber feet to accommodate the contour or shape of the tub or shower. It also advises ensuring that the brass tension knobs on the leg adjustments are positioned at the correct level so that the chair is completely level. This highlights the importance of proper leg adjustment for stability and safety, which should be checked regularly.

The Platinum HEALTH Carousel Sliding Bath Bench is designed to be a durable and reliable aid for bathing, with clear instructions for assembly, safe operation, and basic troubleshooting to ensure its longevity and effectiveness. The emphasis on safety features like the safety belt, adjustable legs, and the sliding/swivel mechanisms underscores its purpose as a secure and convenient bathing solution.
