Overview

The Plymovent OS-3 Automatic System Control is a control box designed to automatically operate the exhaust blower of a Plymovent exhaust removal system. It is an energy-saving control unit intended for use with vehicle exhaust systems, with or without a particle filtration system.

Function Description:

The OS-3 controller can be set for both manual and automatic control of the exhaust fan. In automatic mode, the system is activated by a signal from an externally mounted pressure switch and/or an optional temperature switch. The pressure switch detects an increase in pressure within the hose when a vehicle is started up or attached while running, while the optional temperature switch detects when the system temperature reaches between 90°F to 130°F (32°C to 54°C). This ensures the system stays running while the vehicle is in operation.

The control box includes a visible alarm device that can be used to indicate the status of the airflow in the exhaust system. A built-in "after running time" function ensures that toxic gases in the duct system are exhausted before the fan stops. This delay-off time is adjustable between 3 and 60 minutes.

When the control unit is in "automatic" position, the exhaust fan starts when the pressure switch closes (due to engine start or attachment). If the engine turns off or the apparatus leaves the fire station, the pressure and/or temperature in the system decreases, and the control box enters a delay-off mode. After the adjustable time delay, the fan stops.

In "Manual Run Mode," the exhaust fan runs continuously, which is useful for stationary running of vehicles during maintenance checks. When operating a vehicle at high idle in this mode, operation should be limited to 1500 RPM for 5 minutes. To exit Manual Run Mode, the STOP button is pressed, and the system shuts down and automatically returns to AUTO START.

The "Stop Mode" allows the fan to stop immediately by pressing and holding the red STOP button for 2 seconds. After a short period (2-3 seconds), the control box automatically returns to automatic mode, serving as a built-in safety function to reduce the risk of exhaust gas leakage due to operator error.

The "Alarm Mode" detects high pressure loss across an optional filter unit. When the "Fan On" LED indicator light is flashing, it indicates that the pressure across the filter has exceeded the acceptable range, and the filter should be replaced to maintain proper system operation.

The OS-3 control box is designed to work with Plymovent vehicle exhaust extraction system components, including fans and STR, VSR, and SBT rail systems, specifically for emergency response and fire vehicle applications.

Usage Features:

  • Automatic Operation: Starts the blower when a truck is connected, based on pressure or temperature sensing.
  • Manual Run: Allows continuous blower operation for extended maintenance procedures.
  • Adjustable Delay Off: Ensures complete exhaust gas removal after vehicle disconnection, with a customizable delay from 3 to 60 minutes.
  • Filter Alarm: Flashing LED light indicates when a filter change is required due to high pressure loss.
  • Pressure Switch Adjustment: Field-adjustable to accommodate various engine sizes.
  • Temperature Switch Adjustment: Field-adjustable to maintain fan operation as long as the vehicle is running, with a recommended setting between 120°F/49°C and 130°F/55°C.
  • Remote Alarm (Optional): Dry contact connection for a Building Automation System (BAS) to provide status output.
  • Optional Wireless Control System: Facilitates remote mounting of pressure and/or temperature switches on rail or track systems, with a range of 500 feet. The receiver can learn up to 24 different transmitters and is designed to be immune to Wi-Fi interference.

Maintenance Features:

The OS-3 requires no specific maintenance. However, if the OS-3 does not function correctly, users should contact their local authorized dealer/technician. Spare parts are available and listed in the manual, categorized by fan HP and voltage/phase.

Safety Precautions:

  • Installation, start-up, and maintenance should only be performed by qualified personnel familiar with adjustable frequency AC drives and associated machinery.
  • Verify that bus capacitors have discharged before working on electrical controls.
  • Incorrect application or installation can lead to component damage or reduced product life.
  • The electrical controls, switches, and/or drives may contain ESD sensitive parts; static control precautions may be required.
  • The control box must be installed by a state-licensed electrician to meet the National Electric Code (NEC) and all local codes and standards.
  • Do not install the control box in areas with flammable gases.
  • All interconnect cables/wire size used must comply with UL, NEC, and all other national and local standards codes.
  • Glands used for cable insertion must be placed at the bottom of the casing, and cables should fit tightly to prevent moisture entry.
  • Ensure the machine is suitable for connection to the local mains; information about connection voltage and frequency is on the identification plate.
  • The thermal relay should be set according to the overload mentioned on the motor's identification plate.
  • Disconnect mains before servicing to avoid electrocution hazards.
  • When using the manual run mode with high idle, limit truck operation to 1500 RPM for 5 minutes.
  • Vehicles with DPF systems (2007 model year and newer) must not be regenerated while connected to the Plymovent system.
  • Vehicles that have recently undergone regeneration should not be connected until normal exhaust gas operating temperatures have returned.
