Overview

The Poolguard GAPT-2 is a gate alarm system designed to enhance safety by detecting unwanted intrusions into unsupervised areas, particularly around pools. It is important to remember that this device is a safety alarm system and not a life-saving device; it should be used in conjunction with existing safety equipment and procedures.

Function Description:

The Poolguard GAPT-2 operates as a gate alarm that activates when a gate is opened, providing an audible alert to signal potential entry into a restricted area. The system consists of two main parts: the gate alarm unit itself, which houses the horn, LED indicator, and pass-thru switch, and a gate sensor, which includes a sensor magnet and a sensor switch connected to the alarm unit via a sensing wire. When the gate is closed, the sensor magnet and sensor switch are aligned, keeping the alarm in a non-triggered state. When the gate is opened, the sensor magnet moves away from the sensor switch, triggering the alarm sequence. The horn, which produces a sound of 85dB at 10 feet, provides a clear and loud alert.

The alarm incorporates two delay modes to allow users to exit and enter the gate without immediately triggering the alarm. The "First Delay Mode" activates automatically when the gate is opened, providing a 7-second window for the user to push the "pass thru switch" on the alarm unit. If the switch is not pressed within this timeframe, the alarm will sound, regardless of whether the gate is open or closed. To silence the alarm in this scenario, the gate must be closed, and then the pass-thru switch must be pressed.

The "Second Delay Mode" is engaged when the gate is opened and the pass-thru switch is pressed within the initial 7-second window. This mode grants the user 14 seconds to pass through the gate and close it. If the gate is successfully closed within these 14 seconds, the alarm system will automatically reset. However, if the gate remains open beyond the 14-second period, the alarm will sound.

If the alarm sounds for approximately 5 minutes while the gate is still open, the horn will transition into a pulsating pattern, sounding for 5 seconds ON and 5 seconds OFF. This pulsating alarm will continue until an adult closes the gate and presses the pass-thru switch on the gate alarm to silence it. If the alarm sounds for approximately 5 minutes and the gate is closed, the alarm will reset automatically.

Usage Features:

Installation of the Poolguard GAPT-2 involves several steps to ensure proper functionality. The gate alarm unit should be mounted at least 54 inches above the threshold of the gate. Two marks, 2 1/2 inches apart vertically, should be made on the mounting surface, where two larger supplied screws will be inserted. These screws should be left exposed by about 5/32 inches (excluding the head) to allow the alarm unit to hang securely using its hanger holes. The alarm unit is then pulled downward to ensure the screws are positioned in the small end of the hanger holes.

The gate sensor is installed on the stationary part of the fence, typically the frame, near the top of the fence post but not on the hinged side. The sensor switch, which is permanently connected to the sensing wire from the alarm unit, is installed first using a supplied screw. The sensor magnet should then be aligned with the sensor switch. For optimal performance, the sensor switch and sensor magnet should line up with each other. A spacing of up to 2 inches between the sensor switch and sensor magnet is generally acceptable. However, if the gate or fence post is made of steel, this spacing might be limited to 1 1/4 inches, requiring a test of the alarm to confirm functionality. If a 2-inch spacing is needed in such cases, 1/4-inch thick wood or plastic shims can be used under both the sensor switch and sensor magnet to achieve the desired gap.

The device is powered by a 9V alkaline battery. To install the battery, the assembly screw on the back of the gate alarm is removed, and the top cover is taken off. The battery spring is pulled down, and the 9V battery is installed. It is crucial to ensure the battery spring is correctly positioned under the battery, otherwise, the alarm unit will not reassemble properly. Once the battery is installed, the LED indicator on the alarm unit will flash once every 10 seconds, signaling that the battery is active. When the alarm sounds, the LED will flash once every second, providing a visual cue. After battery installation, the gate alarm is reassembled with the assembly screw. It's important to note that the alarm may sound accidentally until the sensors are properly connected.

Maintenance Features:

The Poolguard GAPT-2 includes a low battery function to alert users when the battery needs replacement. When the 9-volt battery is low, the gate alarm horn will emit a chirp once every 10 seconds. This indicates that it's time to install a new battery. Battery life is approximately 1 year under normal conditions. Regular testing of the gate alarm is recommended on a weekly basis. This involves opening the gate and allowing the alarm to sound to ensure it is functioning correctly.

The product comes with a limited warranty covering defects in parts and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase. Users are advised to retain their proof of purchase. In case of a defect, customers should contact the Customer Service department. Unauthorized returns are not accepted, and proper repair is ensured only when the unit is returned to the manufacturer. Warranty registration information can be found on the manufacturer's website.
