Why my Portland 57436 Chainsaw engine will not start?
    • J
      Jamie ColemanAug 14, 2025
If your Portland Chainsaw engine won't start, several fuel-related issues could be the cause. First, ensure the fuel tank has a fresh 87+ octane stabilizer-treated unleaded gasoline/oil mixture, avoiding gasoline with more than 10% ethanol. If the engine is cold, make sure the choke is in the START position. Prime the carburetor by pressing the Prime Bulb several times. If the carburetor is flooded, turn the Choke Knob to the RUN position and pull the Starter Handle 10-20 times. Also, check for and clean any dirty fuel passageways, or clean/replace a clogged fuel filter.

      Douglas BeardAug 20, 2025
If your Portland Chainsaw engine misfires, check the following: * Ensure the spark plug cap is securely connected. * Verify the spark plug gap is correct, and replace the plug if damaged. * Replace the spark plug cap if defective. * Use a fresh 87+ octane stabilizer-treated unleaded gasoline/oil mixture, avoiding gasoline with more than 10% ethanol. * If the issue persists, it could be incorrect compression, which requires diagnosing and repairing.

Why does my Portland 57436 Chainsaw engine stops suddenly?
    • B
      Becky BeasleyAug 25, 2025
If your Portland Chainsaw engine stops suddenly, make sure the fuel tank is filled with a fresh 87+ octane stabilizer-treated unleaded gasoline/oil mixture, and that you are not using gasoline with more than 10% ethanol. Check the breather valve and replace it if defective, as it may be creating a vacuum that prevents proper fuel flow. Also, ensure the spark plug cap is securely connected. If these steps don't resolve the issue, a faulty magneto may be the cause, and it should be serviced by a qualified technician.

If your Portland Chainsaw engine runs but the chain does not rotate, adjust the saw chain tension, as it may be too tight. • B
      bernardelizabethSep 10, 2025
If your Portland Chainsaw engine knocks, ensure you are using a fresh 87+ octane stabilizer-treated unleaded gasoline/oil mixture, avoiding gasoline with more than 10% ethanol. Also, do not exceed the equipment’s load rating, as the engine might be overloaded. If the knocking continues, it could be due to incorrect spark timing, deposit buildup, a worn engine, or other mechanical problems, which would require diagnosis and service by a qualified technician.
