Overview

The Portland Electric 13" String Trimmer is a gardening appliance designed for trimming and edging tasks. It is an electric-powered tool, requiring a 120VAC/60Hz power supply and drawing 4A. The trimmer operates at a no-load speed of 7,800 RPM and uses a 0.065" Nylon line for cutting.

Function Description:

The primary function of this device is to cut grass and weeds using a spinning nylon line. It can be used for both trimming and edging operations. For trimming, the head can be adjusted to a vertical position, and for edging, it can be set to a horizontal position. The device features an automatic line feeding mechanism that activates when the trimmer stops. It also includes an Edge Guide to help limit striking objects while trimming nearby and can be flipped up when not in use. The working height of the trimmer can be adjusted by loosening and tightening the Length Sleeve.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Electrical Rating: 120VAC / 60Hz / 4A
  • No Load Speed: 7,800 RPM
  • Replacement Line Type: 0.065" Nylon
  • Extension Cord Compatibility: Requires an outdoor-rated extension cord of type SW-A, SOW-A, STW-A, STOW-A, SJW-A, SJOW-A, SJTW-A, or SJTOW-A. The manual provides a table for minimum wire gauge based on cord length and ampere rating, emphasizing the use of heavier gauge for longer cords.
  • Polarized Plug: The appliance has a polarized plug (one blade wider than the other) and requires a polarized extension cord and wall outlet to reduce the risk of electric shock.
  • Double-Insulated Design: Indicated by the square symbol, this design provides additional protection against electric shock.

Usage Features:

  • Safety First: Emphasizes reading all instructions before use. Users must wear ANSI-approved safety goggles, close-toed work boots, long pants, and other safety gear during operation.
  • Cord Hook: A built-in cord hook helps secure the extension cord to the appliance, preventing accidental disconnection during operation. This involves making a loop in the extension cord, pressing it through a hole in the handle, and hooking it around the cord hook.
  • Auxiliary Handle: An adjustable auxiliary handle provides additional grip and control. It can be positioned and secured using a locking knob.
  • Head Angle Adjustment: The trimmer head angle can be adjusted by pressing the Head Angle Button and rotating the head. It can rotate 180° for switching between trimming and edging modes.
  • Length Adjustment: The overall length of the trimmer can be adjusted to suit the user's height by loosening and tightening the Length Sleeve.
  • Automatic Line Feed: The string trimmer automatically feeds line when the appliance stops. Manual line feeding is also possible by unplugging the power cord, pressing the Feed Button at the base of the Reel, and pulling out the line.
  • Environmental Conditions: Designed for outdoor use only, in daylight hours. Should not be used in rain, snow, sprinklers, or wet grass.
  • Storage: When not in use, the appliance should be stored indoors in a dry, high, or locked-up place, out of reach of children. The trimming blade should be covered after every use.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Use Inspection: Before each use, inspect the general condition of the appliance for loose hardware, misalignment or binding of moving parts, damaged cord/electrical wiring, cracked or broken parts, and any other condition that may affect its safe operation.
  • Post-Use Cleaning: After each use, clean the external surfaces of the appliance with a clean, moist cloth.
  • Line Replacement: Instructions are provided for replacing the nylon line. This involves removing the Reel Cover and Spool, winding new 0.065" Nylon line onto the Spool, and reassembling.
  • Damaged Parts: Any damaged guards or other parts should be carefully checked and repaired or replaced by a qualified technician. The supply cord, if damaged, must be replaced only by a qualified service technician.
  • Vibration Hazard Mitigation: The manual addresses vibration hazards, recommending regular medical check-ups for frequent users, wearing suitable gloves, taking vibration-free periods, gripping the appliance lightly, and maintaining the appliance to reduce vibration.
  • GFCI Protection: Recommends Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection for the circuit or outlet used with the appliance to prevent electrical shock.
