Overview

The Power Innovation INVB-Series Inverter is a sophisticated power supply unit designed for a wide range of applications, including telecommunications, industrial settings, and rail systems. This manual provides comprehensive information for chief operators, system supervisors, electrical consultants, and installation electricians, ensuring proper installation, operation, and maintenance.

Function Description

The INVB-Series Inverter serves as a reliable power conversion device, transforming DC input voltage into stable AC output voltage. A key feature of this series is its integrated bypass switch module, which allows the inverter to operate in two primary modes: ON-Line and OFF-Line. In ON-Line mode, the load is preferentially supplied by the inverter, ensuring a continuous and high-quality AC power source. In OFF-Line mode, the load is primarily supplied by the external commercial power line (mains). The inverter is a pure stand-alone operating unit, meaning it does not support parallel operation functionality. The switch-over time of the integrated bypass contact is remarkably fast, typically less than 4 milliseconds, ensuring minimal interruption to the connected load during power transitions.

The inverter's design incorporates galvanic isolation between the DC input and AC output, achieved through a transformer. This isolation, combined with high-frequency switching, contributes to a compact and lightweight design. The inverters boast very low output impedance, making them suitable for non-linear loads such as switching power supplies. Even under considerable peak currents, the sine wave output experiences only slight deformation, maintaining power quality. A robust IGBT-fullbridge stage at the AC output further enhances its performance and reliability.

The INVB-Series Inverters are equipped with forced fan cooling, where the fan speed adjusts dynamically based on the internal inverter temperature and the AC output power, optimizing thermal management.

Usage Features

The INVB-Series Inverter offers a comprehensive suite of protective and monitoring functions to ensure safe and reliable operation. These include:

  • Overload and Short Circuit Protection: The output is protected against excessive current draw and short-circuit conditions, preventing damage to both the inverter and connected equipment.
  • DC Under Voltage Protection (UVP) and Over Voltage Protection (OVP): Safeguards the inverter from damage due to abnormal DC input voltage levels.
  • AC UVP/OVP at Inverter Output: Monitors and protects against under or over voltage conditions at the inverter's AC output.
  • AC UVP/OVP at Mains Input: Ensures the stability of the commercial power line input, protecting the inverter from mains voltage fluctuations.
  • Protection Against Excess Temperature: Prevents overheating by monitoring internal temperatures and taking appropriate action, such as adjusting fan speed or shutting down if necessary.
  • Frequency Monitoring: Maintains a stable output frequency within a fixed tolerance range of +/- 3 Hz.
  • Protection from Reverse Connection of the Battery: Prevents damage from incorrect battery polarity.

The inverter's control elements and connections are clearly laid out for ease of use. A battery switch allows the user to turn the inverter ON/OFF. An LED display provides visual feedback on the load level (25% to 150% overload), online status (inverter operation or mains operation), and power status (standby, selftest, normal operation, internal failure, setup failure, or off/no DC supply). A control push button facilitates setup and control settings, including mode changeover.

The mode changeover feature allows users to switch between "normal-inverter" (ON-Line) and "normal-mains" (OFF-Line) operation modes. A short press of the push button displays the stored operation mode, while a long press (after 3 seconds) changes and permanently stores the new mode.

The inverter's construction is designed for resistance to shock and vibration, making it suitable for mobile applications in addition to fixed installations.

Maintenance Features

The INVB-Series Inverter is designed for minimal maintenance. State-of-the-art circuit design ensures high efficiency and long-term operation at low temperature stress, reducing the likelihood of component failure. The manufacturer explicitly states that the devices need no servicing, and there are no maintenance points inside the inverter. Users are warned not to open the device, as some internal components carry high voltages, posing a safety risk.

For safety and maintenance purposes, external fusing for DC supply, AC supply, and AC output is strongly recommended. The manual advises using 2-pole circuit breakers for both DC and AC fusing. The integrated electronic bypass switch has one fuse (F1) in the AC input line, protecting the bypass switch and electrical contacts. Additional external fusing with an automatic circuit breaker is recommended to de-energize the inverter for installation or maintenance.

The setup mode allows for adjustment of output frequency, normal mode, and AC tolerances. This mode is accessed by a specific procedure involving disconnecting AC supply, setting the battery switch to OFF, holding the push button, and then setting the battery switch to ON. This ensures that parameter changes are made in a controlled environment. The factory default for output frequency is 50Hz, with an option to set it to 60Hz for special needs. All changes made in setup mode are saved permanently upon exiting the mode by turning the battery main switch to OFF.

The product is designed to comply with electrical safety standards EN 60950 (VDE 0805) and has undergone high voltage and protective earth tests. It also meets EMC standards (EN 50081-1, EN 55022A, EN 50082-2) and is CE marked, indicating adherence to European safety, health, and environmental protection requirements.

For shipping and storage, the inverters are packed individually. Users are advised to handle them with care and use the original packing for reshipment. The recommended storage temperature is -20°C to +60°C, non-condensing, and protection against moisture and weather influence is crucial.
