Overview

This document describes the Powerhouse N 2087 (20A model) and N 2089 (40A model) DC to DC Dual Battery Chargers, designed for in-vehicle use to charge auxiliary batteries from either solar panels or the vehicle's main battery.

Function Description:

These chargers offer fully automatic, set-and-forget operation. They isolate the main vehicle battery when the engine is off, preventing discharge and ensuring the vehicle can still start. The design prioritizes solar charging when connected, reducing the load on the vehicle's electrical system. They provide multi-stage charging for various battery types including Lead Acid, AGM/Gel, Calcium, LiON, and LiFePO4. An in-built solar charge controller accepts PV solar panels with an output voltage range of 16-25V.

Usage Features:

  • Heavy duty aluminium case and mounting bracket: Ensures durability and secure installation.
  • Microchip monitoring and control: Provides precise and efficient charging.
  • Fully automatic high frequency multi-stage charging: Optimizes the charging process for battery health.
  • Pulse mode technology: Reduces oxidation, evens electrolyte consistency, and minimizes temperature, leading to longer battery life.
  • Easy push button chemistry select: Allows selection of AGM/Gel, Calcium, LiON, Deep Cycle, VRLA, and conventional flooded Lead-Acid batteries.
  • Internal charger temperature monitoring and power output control: Prevents overheating and ensures safe operation.
  • LED indicators: Show state of charge (Power On, Charging, Fully Charged, Solar Charge) and selected battery chemistry.
  • Over charging, short circuit, and over temperature protection: Safeguards the charger and batteries.
  • Reverse polarity protection: For both input and output.
  • Thermal overload protection: Enhances safety.
  • Solar input overload protection: Protects against excessive solar input.
  • Power cut memory function: Retains the selected battery type until changed.
  • DC Battery Operation: Starts charging the auxiliary battery once the main starting battery reaches 13.0V (or 11.5V if ACC ignition signal is detected). The charger continues to operate even after the vehicle is switched off, shutting off automatically if the main starting battery falls below 12.5V (or 10.8V if ACC wire control is used).
  • Solar Input Operation: Automatically transfers to solar charge mode when solar panels are connected. Requires 16-25V input from solar panels; no charge is delivered below 16V. Solar charging is prioritized when available.
  • Optional ACC wire control: Allows the charger to only charge from the source battery when the ignition is on. Warning: Using ACC wire control with the ignition on but the engine not running can discharge the engine battery below starting point.

  • Warranty Exclusions: Damage by misuse, incorrect installation, neglect, shipping accident, no fault found, or use in a manner not intended by the supplier.
  • Repair/Service: Contact the place of purchase. For direct Altronics purchases, call the nearest store and quote the tax invoice number to obtain a Return Authorisation (R.A.).
  • R.A. Process: Altronics will issue an R.A. with instructions for sending goods. Freight for shipping goods to Altronics for repairs is at the customer's expense. Altronics pays return freight if the warranty claim is accepted.
  • Over-the-Counter Purchases: Return goods to any Altronics store with proof of purchase. An R.A. number will be issued upon drop-off.
  • Repair/Replacement Discretion: Altronics has discretion to repair or replace goods, and to use identical goods or different models/products due to changes.
  • Self-Repair Warning: Attempting to repair the device yourself or via a non-authorized service center will invalidate the warranty.

Entitlement to repair or replacement if goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure is not major.

Installation Guidelines:

  • Requires twin core wiring and suitable cable connectors (not included).
  • Ensure existing cables are of suitable gauge; replace if necessary.
  • Locate the charger in a suitable, dry area.
  • Securely mount the charger using provided brackets and screws (overhead, vertically, or horizontally).
  • Measure and ensure proper cable length.
  • Ensure all cabling meets specifications and is not exposed to excessive heat, moving parts, or abrasion.
  • Connect the auxiliary battery to the charger's shared negative (GROUND) and positive output (OUTPUT) wires.
  • Connect the main starting battery to the charger's positive DC INPUT and negative GROUND wires.
  • Connect solar panel wires to the charger.
  • Insulate and secure any unused cables (e.g., ACC wire).
  • Check all connections for tightness.
  • Recommendation: Install 30A fuses or circuit breakers between the charger and each battery on the positive wires, close to the batteries.
  • For camper/caravan installations, an Anderson style plug between the tow vehicle and camper/caravan is recommended.

Important Safety Instructions:

  • Not for use by children or infirm persons without supervision.
  • For automotive and recreational vehicle 12V deep cycle battery use only; not for dry cell batteries.
  • Do not use near naked flame; batteries generate explosive gases.
  • Never smoke or light cigarettes near a battery.
  • Do not place tools on top of battery or allow them to fall, to prevent short circuits and sparks.
  • Always wear eye protection when charging.
  • Conduct charging and testing in a well-ventilated area.
  • Inadequate ventilation can cause overheating and inefficient operation.
  • Not intended for outdoor operation; do not expose to moisture or extreme weather.
  • Battery acid/fluid is highly corrosive and poisonous, producing flammable and toxic gases. Wear eye protection, remove jewellery, and ensure ventilation. If split, it causes severe burns and damage; disconnect power and wash affected area with water.
  • Retain the instruction manual for future reference.

Troubleshooting:

  • Charger won't indicate charging: Check connection to battery, terminal connection, and ensure battery is 12V.
  • Battery won't charge: Check wiring specifications, battery condition, and alternator performance.
  • Battery won't fully charge or hold charge: Batteries over 3 years old, severely discharged, not regularly recharged, overheated, low in electrolyte, undercharged, overcharged, or sulphated may not accept or hold charge. A good automotive store or battery outlet can check battery condition; replacement may be required.
  • Note: Not observing battery manufacturer charging instructions may void battery warranty.
