SPARK ARRESTOR MUFFLER MAINTENANCE
Gensets equipped with a spark arrestor muffler will require periodic cleaning. If the internal
spark arrestor is not cleaned regularly the accumulated soot may cause excessive backpressure
resulting in poor performance. To maintain optimum performance from your Power Tech Genset
follow the Service Schedule in Section 2, page 4.
WARNING: Exhaust system components may be hot and can cause severe burns. Allow
sufficient cool down time before removing and reinstalling the cleanout plug.
The spark arrestor muffler is located inside the Genset enclosure and mounted to the base pan on
the non-service side of the generator. Easy access to the cleanout plug is obtained through an access
hole in the base pan directly under the muffler.
TO CLEAN A SPARK ARRESTOR MUFFLER:
1) Locate the access hole in the base pan.
2) Insert a 9/16” 8 point or 11/16” 12 point socket and remove the cleanout plug.
3) Start the Genset and allow time for warm up.
4) Apply a sufficient load, near full rated capacity.
5) Allow the Genset to operate at load for approximately 5 minutes.
6) After the soot is expelled remove the load and shut down the generator.
7) Allow the muffler to cool down before reinstalling the cleanout plug.
