Overview

The SolarStop™ 80 Electric Fence Energizer is a solar-powered device designed to electrify fences for animal containment, providing a psychological barrier to keep animals within or outside a designated area. This energizer is suitable for various applications, including livestock pastures, zoos, game reserves, and general animal control.

Function Description:

The core function of the SolarStop™ 80 is to generate electric pulses that are transmitted through a fence, delivering a deterrent shock to animals upon contact. The device utilizes a solar panel to convert sunlight into electrical current, which is then stored in a 12V 12 Amp lead-acid battery. This stored energy powers the energizer, ensuring continuous operation day and night. The solar panel's ability to recharge the battery can be affected by environmental factors such as darkness, cloudy weather, and fog, particularly during the months of October to February. Therefore, external recharging of the battery using the included 110V Battery Recharger/Power Supply Adapter (#371040-US) may be necessary.

The energizer features a control panel with indicator lights to monitor its status:

  • GREEN light: Flashes when the unit is operating.
  • YELLOW light: Flashes if the solar panel is actively producing power.
  • RED light: Flashes if the battery capacity drops below 11.5V, indicating that the battery needs immediate recharging.

The device offers two operating modes:

  • Max Output, Mode II: Provides a higher energy output for full battery capacity (0.8 joules, 10,200V no-load voltage, 1.5-second impulse interval). This mode is suitable for longer fences or situations requiring a stronger deterrent.
  • Energy Saver, Mode I: Offers a lower energy output (0.48 joules, 8,000V no-load voltage, 1.5-second impulse interval) when the battery is full, conserving power. This mode is ideal for shorter fences or when extended battery life is desired.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Battery: 12V 12 Amp Sealed Lead Acid Battery (#121600).
  • Solar Panel: 10W Solar Panel (#281321).
  • Max Output Energy (Full Battery):
    • Mode II: 0.8 joules
    • Mode I: 0.48 joules
  • No Load Voltage (Full Battery):
    • Mode II: 10,200V
    • Mode I: 8,000V
  • Impulse Interval (Full Battery): 1.5 seconds for both modes.
  • Current Consumption (Full Battery):
    • Mode II: 64-45 mA
    • Mode I: 35-24 mA
  • Power Consumption (Full Battery):
    • Mode II: 0.832 watts
    • Mode I: 0.460 watts
  • No Load Voltage (Battery < 11V): 7,300V for both modes.
  • Max Output Energy (Battery < 11V): 0.4 joules for both modes.
  • Impulse Interval (Battery < 11V): 2 seconds for both modes.
  • Current Consumption (Battery < 11V): 64-45 mA for Mode II, 35-24 mA for Mode I.
  • Power Consumption (Battery < 11V): 0.300 watts for both modes.
  • Recharger/Power Supply Adapter: 110V Battery Recharger/Power Supply Adapter, 1.5A (#371040-US).
  • Ground Rod: T Ground Rod, 18" (#151220).
  • Wiring Harness: (#130800).
  • Digital Tester: Digital Tester for Fences & Batteries (#200010).

Usage Features:

  • Installation: The energizer is designed for easy installation. The battery is connected within a side panel compartment. A wiring harness connects the energizer to the fence (red terminal for fence, black terminal for ground) and a T ground rod.
  • Solar Orientation: For optimal performance, the solar panel should be positioned to face due South to maximize sunlight exposure, especially during low-light winter months. It's crucial to avoid placing the unit where it might be covered by shadows from trees, bushes, or tall grass.
  • Grounding: Proper grounding is essential for optimal output. The ground rod should be placed in a moist location. Additional or deeper ground rods may be necessary in dry regions. A minimum distance of 30 ft must be maintained between the energizer's ground system and other earth systems (e.g., telephone, mains power, anti-lightning).
  • Fence Connection: The energizer connects to the fence via a wiring harness with orange and black clips. The orange clip connects to the fence terminal (red), and the black clip connects to the ground terminal (black).
  • 110V Operation: For continuous indoor operation, the 110V adapter can be plugged directly into an indoor 110V outlet. An insulated leadout wire (#164207) is then used to connect the energizer fence terminal to the fence. The 110V adapter must be installed in a dry, moisture-protected room.
  • Fence Line Length: The energizer can support various fence lengths depending on the type of fence and soil conditions. For example, it can electrify 3-6 rolls of netting or 1-1/2 miles of 3-strand fence for cattle, and 1/2 mile of 5-7 strand fence for sheep.
  • Safety Guidelines: The manual emphasizes critical safety guidelines, including avoiding contact with the head, mouth, neck, or torso, using appropriate footwear, never energizing barbed wire, hanging warning signs, and using smaller energizers near children or untrained adults. It also advises against connecting two energizers to the same fence and installing electrified wires on feedlot or corral fences.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Charging: The battery should be kept charged, either by the solar panel or the 110V charging unit. A fully charged 12V battery should measure between 12.6 and 13.4V. Overcharging should be avoided.
  • Winter Protocol: During winter or periods of non-use, the battery charge should be maintained above 12.2V. Lead-acid batteries perform poorly when left discharged or at a low charge for extended periods. Regular recharging to 12.6-13.4 volts is recommended.
  • Solar Panel Cleaning: Regularly remove debris such as grass clippings, dust, leaves, and snow from the solar panel to ensure its optimal recharging capability.
  • Storage: When not in use, the energizer should be stored indoors at room temperature.
  • Troubleshooting: The energizer should only be opened or repaired by qualified personnel to reduce the risk of electric shock.
  • Voltage Testing: A Digital Tester for Fences & Batteries (#200010) or a multimeter can be used to test battery voltage and fence voltage. It is recommended to check the voltage at the end of the fence to ensure proper electrification (minimum 3000V).

Warranty:

The energizer and solar panels come with a 2-year warranty covering lightning damage, defective parts, or workmanship. Batteries have a 30-day warranty. Misuse and flood damage are not covered. If an energizer fails under warranty, Premier will replace the unit and reimburse the cost after examination.
