Overview

This document describes the Protech ESD Safe Solder/Desolder Rework Station, model TS1648, a 2-in-1 SMD hot air rework station designed for soldering and desoldering various surface-mounted ICs, PCBs, and components. It is presented as a highly cost-effective tool for soldering work.

Function Description

The device combines a soldering iron and a hot air pump, making it versatile for different rework tasks. Its innovative heater and sensor system ensures quick heat-up times and rapid temperature recovery, which is crucial for efficient and consistent soldering. A key feature is the hot air pump handle, which incorporates a sensor. When the handle is picked up from its holder, the unit automatically enters "Working Mode" and begins heating. Conversely, when the handle is placed back into the holder, the unit transitions into "Standby Mode," ceasing the heating process. This automatic mode switching enhances safety and energy efficiency.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Voltage: 220-240V~50Hz, ensuring compatibility with standard electrical outlets in many regions.
  • Soldering Iron Power: 24V, 60W, providing ample power for various soldering applications.
  • Hot Air Pump Power: 300W, delivering sufficient power for effective hot air desoldering and rework.
  • Temperature Range (Soldering Iron): 50-480°C, offering a wide range for different solder types and component sensitivities.
  • Temperature Range (Hot Air Pump): 100-500°C, suitable for a broad spectrum of hot air rework tasks.

The device is TÜV Rheinland certified for Electromagnetic Compatibility and Regular Production Surveillance, indicating adherence to safety and quality standards. It also carries a "geprüfte Sicherheit" (tested safety) mark.

Usage Features

The station features a clear digital display for both the soldering station and SMD rework station, showing the current temperature settings.

  • Temperature Adjustment: Users can adjust the temperature using "+" or "-" buttons. A short press changes the set-point by ±1°C, while a long press allows for rapid adjustment to the target temperature.
  • Temperature Unit Conversion: A dedicated "°C/°F" button allows for easy switching between Celsius and Fahrenheit units. The default unit is Celsius.
  • Air Flow Rate Adjustment: A knob is provided to adjust the air flow rate of the hot air pump. Rotating the knob towards "LOW" decreases the air flow, while rotating it towards "HI" increases it.
  • Sleep Function: The hot air pump handle's sensor-based sleep function automatically stops heating when the handle is placed in its holder, displaying "SLP" (SLEEP). Heating resumes immediately when the handle is picked up, returning to the set temperature.
  • Self-Test on Power-Up: Upon switching on, the unit performs a self-test, briefly illuminating all display elements before automatically setting to the last used temperature.
  • Error Indication: If the soldering iron does not heat or is not working, the OSD (On-Screen Display) will show "EEE."

Safety Precautions for Usage:

  • Always ensure the voltage matches the local network.
  • The appliance is not intended for use by persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless supervised. Children under 8 years old should not operate or maintain the appliance.
  • Do not operate with a damaged plug or cord, or after malfunction/damage.
  • The soldering iron must be placed on its stand when not in use.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation to dissipate heat and fumes.
  • Never immerse in water or operate with wet hands.
  • Wear appropriate clothing and safety goggles.
  • Perform soldering on a stable, non-combustible surface.
  • Avoid touching metallic parts near the soldering tip/nozzle.
  • Do not leave the soldering iron unattended when switched on.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after working with solder.
  • Always switch off and disconnect the plug when not in use.
  • Allow the station to cool down to room temperature before storage.
  • Be cautious of combustible materials, heat conduction to unseen areas, and explosive atmospheres.

Maintenance Features

  • Pre-Use Inspection: Before each use, safety devices and any potentially damaged parts must be thoroughly checked for error-free operation. This includes inspecting moving parts for binding or damage.
  • Repair and Replacement: Damaged safety devices and parts must be repaired or replaced by a qualified technician, unless otherwise specified in the manual.
  • Accessory Use: Only accessories or attachments listed in the operation manual should be used to prevent injury.
  • Cleaning: Cleaning and user maintenance should not be performed by children without supervision.

The device is distributed by TechBrands by Electus Distribution Pty. Ltd. in Australia.
