Overview

The PRYMEBLU Mobile Adapter is designed to allow users of amateur mobile radios to connect a wireless headset or other audio accessory to their mobile or base station amateur radio. This enhances convenience and flexibility for radio communication.

Function Description

The core function of the PRYMEBLU Mobile Adapter is to bridge the gap between a wired amateur radio system and wireless audio accessories. It enables the use of Bluetooth-enabled headsets for transmitting and receiving audio, freeing the user from the constraints of wired accessories. The adapter connects to the radio's accessory port, typically a 6-pin DIN type jack labeled "Packet" or "Data," which is commonly used for digital modems.

The adapter features a compact and rugged polycarbonate housing that encases its Bluetooth and radio interface circuitry. A Status LED on the adapter provides visual feedback to the user about its current operational status, such as pairing mode, normal operation, or power status.

For power, the PRYMEBLU Mobile Adapter requires an external filtered, regulated DC power source, typically between 10 and 15 VDC. Power leads (red for positive, black for negative) are provided for this connection, and it's recommended to use at least #20 AWG stranded insulated copper wire for all connections.

The adapter also includes an external PTT (Push-to-Talk) jack, a 2.5 mm Tip-Sleeve (TS) style jack, which allows for the connection of an optional wired external PTT device, such as a foot switch. This provides an alternative method for initiating transmission.

Usage Features

Setting up the PRYMEBLU Mobile Adapter involves several steps to ensure proper functionality:

  1. Connecting to the Amateur Radio: The adapter's radio connector is aligned and pushed firmly into the amateur radio's accessory jack. If a wired PTT is to be used, its connector is plugged into the adapter's external PTT jack.

  2. Radio Programming: For some radio models, it may be necessary to set the radio for "1200 Baud" packet radio operation. Using "9600 baud" packet mode may prevent the wireless adapter from working correctly.

  3. Powering the Adapter: The adapter is connected to its external DC power source. The black wire connects to the negative lead or chassis ground, and the red wire connects to the positive lead.

  4. Mounting the Adapter: Velcro is supplied with the adapter, allowing it to be securely mounted near the amateur radio. It's recommended to mount it in a location where the Status LED is visible and the Multifunction Button is easily accessible.

  5. Pairing with a Wireless Headset:

    • Ensure the radio, adapter, and headset are all powered OFF, and the headset is fully charged.
    • Put the wireless headset into its pairing mode according to its manufacturer's instructions.
    • On the PRYMEBLU Mobile Adapter, press and hold the Multifunction Button while turning the Power Switch to ON. Continue holding the button for approximately three seconds until the Status LED flashes twice per second, indicating headset pairing mode.
    • Place the headset near the adapter and wait for them to synchronize. Once paired, the adapter's LED will show a long blue flash followed by a single blue flash every few seconds. If no compatible headset is detected within sixty seconds, the adapter will exit pairing mode.
    • After pairing, the amateur mobile radio can be powered on.
  6. Pairing with an Optional PRYMEBLU BT-PTT Switch:

    • Ensure the radio, adapter, headset, and BT-PTT are all turned OFF, and the BT-PTT is fully charged.
    • On the PRYMEBLU Mobile Adapter, press and hold the Multifunction Button while turning the Power Switch to ON. Continue holding the button for approximately three seconds until the Status LED flashes twice per second.
    • Press the Multifunction Button on the adapter again and release it. The LED will now flash three times per second, indicating PTT pairing mode.
    • On the PRYME BT-PTT, press and hold its Push-to-Talk button while setting its power switch to ON. Continue holding the button until its LED indicator changes to a series of rapid flashes, indicating PTT pairing mode.
    • Place the BT-PTT near the adapter and wait for them to synchronize. Once paired, the adapter's LED will show a long blue flash followed by a single blue flash every few seconds, and the BT-PTT's LED will show a quick single flash every second. If no compatible BT-PTT is detected within sixty seconds, the adapter will exit pairing mode.
    • Power on the previously paired wireless headset. It should reconnect with the adapter within a few seconds.
    • After all devices are connected, the amateur mobile radio can be powered on.

Reconnecting to Previously Paired Devices:

Once paired, the PRYMEBLU Mobile Adapter remembers its connections. If a headset or BT-PTT is powered off or loses connection, the adapter will attempt to reestablish the link when the devices are powered on and within range. This reconnection process can take between 10 and 60 seconds.

Transmit and Receive Operation:

Push-to-Talk can be activated by:

  • Pressing and holding the Multifunction Button on the PRYMEBLU Mobile Adapter.
  • Pressing and holding the PTT button on a paired PRYMEBLU BT-PTT.
  • Pressing and holding the button on an external Push-to-Talk/Footswitch plugged into the adapter.

When transmitting, the operator's voice is picked up by the microphone in the wireless headset. The radio's hand microphone can also be used as a backup; pressing its PTT button will cause the radio to transmit, and the hand microphone will pick up the operator's voice.

When receiving signals, audio can be heard over both the radio's internal speaker and the earphone in the wireless headset. The radio's volume control knob adjusts the internal speaker volume only. If internal speaker audio is not desired, the radio's volume can be set to zero. The earphone's volume can be controlled using the Volume Up/Down buttons on the wireless headset.

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides guidance for common issues:

  • Pairing failures: If a wireless headset or BT-PTT won't pair, users are advised to re-pair the devices, ensure they are within one meter of each other, and isolate them from other wireless devices that might cause interference.
  • Previously working devices not functioning: Users should check the adapter's connection to the amateur radio and its power supply. They should also ensure the wireless audio accessory has a fully charged battery and is turned on. Re-pairing may be necessary.
  • PTT button not keying the radio: If the Multifunction Button on the adapter works but a paired BT-PTT does not, it suggests the BT-PTT is not properly paired or has become unpaired. Re-pairing the adapter and BT-PTT is recommended.
  • No microphone audio: If the radio keys but no microphone audio is heard, it indicates the wireless headset is not properly paired or has become unpaired. Re-pairing the adapter and headset is recommended.
  • Adapter LED not lighting up: If the adapter's LED does not light up when the radio is turned on, users should check the connections to the external DC power supply and ensure it is turned on.

Maintenance Features

The PRYMEBLU Mobile Adapter is designed for durability and ease of use, requiring minimal specific maintenance from the user beyond ensuring proper power supply and secure connections.

  • Cleaning: The polycarbonate housing can be wiped clean with a soft, dry cloth as needed to remove dust or smudges. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the housing or internal components.
  • Battery Management: For wireless headsets and optional BT-PTT switches, regular charging of their internal batteries is crucial for reliable operation. The adapter itself draws power from the amateur radio's DC power source, so ensuring a stable and adequate power supply to the radio is part of its overall maintenance.
  • Connection Integrity: Periodically checking the physical connections of the adapter to the amateur radio, the external DC power source, and any optional wired PTT devices helps ensure consistent performance. Loose connections can lead to intermittent operation or complete failure.
  • Firmware Updates: While not explicitly detailed as a user-performable task, electronic devices like this may occasionally benefit from firmware updates to improve performance or address bugs. Users should refer to PRYME's official support channels for information on any available updates and the procedures for applying them.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, storing the adapter in a clean, dry environment, away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight, will help preserve its lifespan.

The adapter's robust design aims to provide long-term reliability in various operating conditions. The provided Velcro for mounting also allows for easy repositioning or removal if needed for cleaning or maintenance of the radio setup.
