Overview

The Pure Contour 200i Air is a versatile audio system designed to play music from various sources, including Apple devices, iTunes, and auxiliary inputs, with the added convenience of wireless connectivity via AirPlay. It serves as a high-quality speaker system that can be integrated into a home network for streaming audio.

Function Description

The Contour 200i Air primarily functions as an AirPlay-enabled speaker, allowing users to stream audio wirelessly from iTunes on a computer or from an iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad. It also acts as a docking station for Apple devices, providing both audio playback and charging capabilities. Additionally, it features an auxiliary input for connecting other audio devices and a digital output for integration with external hi-fi systems.

The device supports three power modes: On, Standby, and Sleep. In "On" mode, it is fully operational. "Standby" uses minimal power, indicated by a bright red Status LED. "Sleep" mode keeps the device connected to the wireless network while waiting for an audio source, with a dimmed red Status LED. The Contour 200i Air automatically enters Sleep mode after 15 minutes of inactivity from AirPlay or a docked device.

Usage Features

Getting Started and Network Setup:

To begin, the Contour 200i Air needs to be connected to a wireless or wired network. For wireless setup, the device can be positioned within range of a wireless network and powered on. The Status LED will flash red while the temporary wireless network starts up, then flash green and blue when ready for connection.

There are two primary methods for wireless connection:

  1. Wi-Fi Network Login Sharing (for Apple devices): Dock an unlocked iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad. After authentication, the Apple device will prompt to share Wi-Fi settings. Tapping "Allow" connects the Contour to the network. The Status LED will turn solid white in AirPlay mode upon successful connection.
  2. Manual Wireless Setup: Press the Wi-Fi Setup button on the back of the Contour for five seconds to activate its temporary wireless network. A setup device (iPhone, laptop, Android) can then connect to the "Contour 200i Air ******" wireless network (no password required). Once connected, the Contour Setup Manager can be accessed via a web browser at http://192.168.1.12. From the "Connection" tab, users can select their wireless network, enter the security key, and connect. The Status LED will flash red during reboot and then dim red in Sleep mode.

For a wired connection, an Ethernet cable can be connected from the Contour's Ethernet port to a router. The device will then be ready to stream music via AirPlay with a wired connection once the Status LED stops flashing red and enters Sleep mode.

Playing Audio:

  • Using AirPlay: Press the "Source" button on the remote control until the Status LED is white. If the LED is steady white, AirPlay is set up. From an iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad, select the Contour from the list of AirPlay devices. The AirPlay symbol will turn blue when the device is using Contour as a speaker. From iTunes on a computer, click the AirPlay symbol and select the Contour from the list. The Status LED will turn white when AirPlay is active.
  • Streaming to Multiple Rooms: If multiple Contour devices are present, iTunes can be used to simultaneously stream the same audio to each by selecting the "Multiple Speakers" option from the AirPlay icon.
  • Listening to a Docked iPod/iPhone/iPad: Dock the Apple device onto the connector. It will start charging immediately. Press "Source" until the Status LED is blue to select the dock as the input. Playback can be controlled using the remote or the device's controls.
  • Using the Auxiliary Input: Connect an auxiliary device (e.g., MP3 player) to the Aux In socket using a suitable cable. Press "Source" until the Status LED is pink to select the auxiliary input.
  • Using the Digital Output: Connect the Contour to an external digital output device (e.g., hi-fi system) using a coaxial cable to the Digital Coaxial connector. Audio playing through Contour will also be sent to the attached device. Note that Contour's volume controls do not affect the volume on the digital device.

Controlling the Device:

The Contour 200i Air comes with a remote control that provides comprehensive control over its functions:

  • Standby: Toggles between Sleep, Standby, and On modes.
  • Source: Switches between AirPlay, Dock, and Auxiliary input sources.
  • Shuffle: Toggles track playback order (for AirPlay/Dock sources).
  • Repeat: Toggles between repeat current track, repeat all, or no repeat (for AirPlay/Dock sources).
  • Volume (+/-): Adjusts volume up or down.
  • Menu: Accesses menus on a docked iPod/iPhone and steps back through menus.
  • Select (< / >): Selects tracks and menu options on a docked iPod/iPhone.
  • Skip (KK / >>): Skips to the beginning of the current track, or to the previous/next track. Holding these buttons enables fast rewind/fast forward.
  • Play/Pause (▷II): Plays or pauses the current track (for AirPlay/Dock sources).

Contour Setup Manager:

The Setup Manager, accessible via a web browser, allows users to configure various settings:

  • Connection Tab: Configures wireless settings and allows for manual network setup.
  • Product Name: Users can change the name of their Contour device, which will be reflected in their network, iTunes, and Apple devices.
  • Advanced Tab: Configures proxy server settings and IP address settings (DHCP or static IP).
  • Status Tab: Displays firmware/hardware information and wireless connection status.
  • Update Tab (PC/Mac only): Allows for manual firmware updates.

Maintenance Features

Firmware Updates:

The Contour 200i Air supports automatic firmware updates delivered via Wi-Fi when the device is in Standby or Sleep mode. A static amber Status LED indicates that the device is checking for or installing a new firmware version. Firmware updates typically take six to eight minutes. It is crucial not to power off the Contour during an update, as the Status LED will be amber, and controls will be non-functional. Manual firmware updates can also be initiated through the Setup Manager's "Update" tab (only visible when accessing from a PC or Mac).

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides hints and tips for common issues:

  • Cannot connect to wireless network: Ensure the Contour is within range of the router and not in a dead spot.
  • Status LED flashing white: Indicates AirPlay is selected as the source but there's no network connection. Refer to the network setup instructions.
  • Status LED flashing cyan: Indicates a firmware error, requiring contact with technical support.
  • Audio and network connection dropping (Wi-Fi): Ensure Apple devices are running the latest iOS version (5.0 or higher) and Android devices are running version 2.2 or higher. Check for Wi-Fi congestion from other networks and consult router documentation or Pure support.

General Care:

The device should be cleaned only with a dry cloth. It should not be exposed to water or moisture, heat sources, or installed in confined spaces that impede ventilation. Objects filled with liquids, such as vases, should not be placed on the apparatus. The remote control batteries should not be exposed to excessive heat.

Disposal:

The product should not be treated as household waste. Instead, it should be handed over to a suitable collection point for the recycling of electrical and electronic equipment to prevent potential negative environmental and health consequences.
