On a monthly basis, pump a quality bearing grease (8 to 10
pumps) through each grease zerks.Routinely pumping grease
into the bushings acts to replenish the lubricant as well as flush
out any contaminants.Depending on the amount of usage and
the environment, this process
may need to be repeated during
theoperationcycle.
Ram recommends using Shell Gadus V220 2 Grease. Or other
extremepressureandantiwearlithiumgrease.
5.8. DiscBrake
The automatic disc brake does not require any routine
adjustment.However,atleastannually,thediscbrakeshouldbe
subjectedtoloadtest.Thediscbrakeshouldsafelyarresta125%
SWL.Ifthe disc brake allowsanyslippage, the disc brake should
bedisassembled,inspected,andrepaired.
Also,duringoperation,

brake chattering noise can be heard, or the winch performance
(linepullorspeed)isreduced,thebrakemaybedragging.Ifany
of these symptoms are present the disc brake should be
disassembled,inspected,andrepaired.
5.9. AutoDrumBrake
The automatic drum is actuated by a pneumatic cylinder.This
cylinder contains a compression spring that applies (retracts the
rod) the brake band and air pressure delivered to the cylinder
releasesbrake(extendstherod).Theairlinetothebrakecylinder
is plumbed with in via a quick exhaust valve.
This valve quickly
exhausts the air cylinder and allows the brake to set quickly.
Routinely inspect the quick exhaust valve to ensure that it is
working properly and that the exhaust port does not become
restrictedtherebycausingthebrakestosetslowly.
As the brake contacts directly on the
brake surface of the winch
drum it is susceptible to contaminants such as rust, dirt and oils
thatmaygetonthebrakingsurfaceandbecomeimbeddedinthe
friction lining of the brake bands.The brake linings and brake
surfaceshouldbeinspectedandcleanedroutinely.
As this is a
friction based brake, the friction lining needs to
inspected regularly for excessive wear.If any portion of the
frictionliningmeasures1/16”thickorless,thebrakebandsneed
toberelined orreplaced.As the friction liningwears,thebrake
linkage will need to be tightened so as
to maintain its ability to
holdthe rated load.The band brake should safely arrest a 125%
SWL.

This equipment should be routinely inspected and records kept
for each maintenance event and inspe ction interval.Proper and
detailed inspection records provide a historical basis for
continuingevaluationof the service of theequipment.Basedon
the conditions under which the equipment is used, the schedule
of maintenance and inspection can
be adjusted accordingly.
