WARNING: Raritan Engineering Company, Inc. recommends that a qualified person or electrician install
this product. Equipment damage, injury to personnel or death could result from improper
installation. Raritan Engineering Company, Inc. accepts no responsibility or liability for
damage to equipment, injury to personnel or death that may result from improper installation
or operation of this product.
WARNING: Hazard of Shock or Fire - Always use recommended fuse/circuit breaker and wire size. Always
make sure that unit is properly grounded to AC grounding conductor (green).
Hazard of Scalding - Water temperature over 125°F (52°C) can cause severe burns instantly.
WARNING: Hydrogen gas can be produced in a hot water system served by this heater that has not been used
for a long period of time (generally 2 weeks or more). Hydrogen gas is extremely flammable.
To reduce the risk of injury under these conditions, it is recommended that a hot water faucet be
opened for several minutes before using any electrical appliance connected to the hot water
system. If hydrogen is present, there will probably be an unusual sound such as air escaping
through the pipe as the water begins to flow. There should be no smoking or open flame near
the faucet when it is initially opened.

Overview

This document provides installation and maintenance instructions for Raritan Electric Water Heaters, specifically the 1700 Series Models, which can be equipped with or without an optional heat exchanger.

Function Description:

The Raritan Electric Water Heater is designed to provide hot water in marine applications. It features a glass-lined tank, high-density non-CFC foam insulation, and a non-corrosive polymer jacket for durability and efficiency. An adjustable thermostat controls the water temperature, factory-set to 120°F (49°C). Models with an internal Heat Exchanger can heat water from an external source, such as an engine's cooling system, offering an alternative or supplementary heating method. The unit is ignition protected, ensuring safety in marine environments.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Electrical Recovery Rate: 13 gallons (49.2 liters) per hour for standard models. For models #17120203 or 17200203 with a 4500 watt/240V heating element, the recovery rate is 18 gallons (68.1 liters) per hour.

    • XX in model numbers denotes voltage and heating element configuration (e.g., 01 for 120V without heating element, 11 for 120V with heating element).

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Requires installation by a qualified person or electrician. Mounting should be in an area not subject to water spray, especially salt water, with sufficient access for future servicing. Four mounting holes are provided for secure attachment to a deck or sturdy flat area using stainless steel bolts or lag bolts. Auxiliary bracing is recommended for 12 and 20-gallon models, and for 6-gallon models if excessive heeling and pitching is expected.
  • Plumbing: Connections require 3/4" NPT fittings. A vacuum relief valve (such as Watts Model N36) must be installed in the cold water supply line, mounted higher than the hot water outlet, to prevent tank emptying and element burnout. A two-gallon expansion tank is recommended in the cold water line to prevent pressure buildup. The Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve must be installed in the designated opening using Teflon tape on the threads, and its discharge must run unrestricted into the bilge, exiting within six inches above or below the structural floor without contacting live electrical parts.
  • Electrical Wiring: All wiring must comply with ABYC E8, AC wiring standard. A circuit breaker (15 amp for 120V AC, 10 amp for 240V AC, or 20 amp for models 17120203/17200203) is required. ONLY stranded #12-3 (#10-3 for models 17120203/17200203) cable should be used to prevent breakage due to vessel vibration. Wires must be secured at 18" (45.7 cm) intervals. Grounding is achieved by connecting the AC Grounding Conductor (green) to a screw at the bottom of the Thermostat Bracket. Crimp-on terminal ends are provided for secure connections.
  • Start-Up Procedure: Before turning on power, all plumbing lines must be properly installed and secured. Open hot water taps and turn on the water pressure system, allowing water to run for several minutes to expel air from the heater and lines. Failure to expel air can cause the heating element to burn out. Check for leaks before replacing the electrical access cover and turning on power.
  • Heat Exchanger Operation (Optional): For models with a heat exchanger, two 3/4" NPT female threads are provided for connection to the engine cooling system. The installer must follow engine manufacturer recommendations. A gate valve (Item #4 in Fig. #4) is used to control coolant flow. To set the valve, operate the engine at full throttle with the valve wide open, then gradually close it until the engine temperature begins to rise. Reopen the valve enough to establish proper engine operating temperature. Monitor engine temperature to ensure the cooling system functions correctly. Open valve (4) if heated water temperature exceeds 120°F (49°C).

Maintenance Features:

  • Anode Inspection: A removable magnesium Anode, integral with the hot water discharge fitting, should be checked at least once a year by removing it from the water heater. It must be replaced if its diameter is less than 3/8" (9.5 mm). If discoloration, unusual smell, or taste develops in the water, inspect or replace the Anode.
  • Winterization: Before winterizing, turn off power to the water heater. Open all hot water taps to relieve pressure and allow cold water to cool. Remove both lines from the heater and allow it to drain. After draining, blow out with air pressure if available. Pour a quart of non-toxic antifreeze (propylene glycol) into the hot water fitting of the tank using a funnel and short length of hose. Power must remain off until spring. For recommissioning, run water long enough to flush out all antifreeze and fill the tank BEFORE turning on power. Heat exchangers are winterized with the boat's engine cooling system.
  • Thermostat Replacement: Turn off power. Remove the access panel and personnel protector. Unscrew neutral and hot wires from the element. Cut incoming wires, pull tabs of the mounting bracket forward, and lift the thermostat out. Install the new Raritan replacement thermostat (#WH16 - ignition protected), strip incoming wires (5/16" or 8mm exposed), crimp neutral wire supply to white wire and hot wire supply to black wire (using provided series connector), screw ring terminals to element studs, reinstall personnel protector, check for leaks, replace access panel, and turn on AC power.
  • Heating Element Replacement: Turn off power, water pressure pump, and open all hot water faucets to relieve pressure. Drain the heater. Remove the electrical access cover, personnel protector, and two wires connected to the element (do not remove ground wire). Unscrew and remove the Heating Element using a 1½" socket wrench, discarding the gasket (never reuse an old gasket). Install a new gasket and Heating Element, reconnect wires, and install personnel protector and electrical access cover.
  • General Inspection: Periodic visual inspection is recommended to ensure connections are tight, wires are not frayed, and the unit is properly grounded.
  • Cleaning: Do not use solvents to clean the heater jacket.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual includes a troubleshooting guide for common issues such as water not getting hot (check power, circuit breaker, RESET button, heating element, thermostat), relief valve opening/leaking (check thermostat, engine operating temperature if heat exchanger is in use), and constant dripping of relief valve (check for foreign matter, incorrect valve installation, or lack of expansion tank).
  • Parts: Replacement parts can be ordered through local Raritan dealers or directly from the factory (www.raritaneng.com). When ordering, specify part number, description, quantity, and voltage. Technical Support is available for assistance.
