INTRODUCTION
Series 84 and 85 Icer-ettes are CFC-Free automatic
icemakers designed and manufactured especially for
the marine environment. They produce up to 22 lbs
(10kg) of crescent shaped ice per day and can store 11
lbs (5kg). Two cabinet configurations are offered,
allowing counter height installations and shorter
limited height installations. Installation and
maintenance are simple because no drain is required
and the thermostat is fixed; never needing adjustment.
OPERATION
The Icer-ette's on-off switch is just beneath the door.
A unit begins to produce ice within 60 minutes after
start-up. Ice production stops automatically when
the bucket is full enough to interfere with the wire
shut-off arm. The unit should not be turned "off" with
the door closed and ice or water inside.
NOTES:
1. Due to fast freezing, ice cubes may appear
"cloudy". This is trapped air in the water and
does not affect the taste or quality of the ice.
2. "Hollow" ice cubes may result from fast-
freezing under certain climatic conditions such
as high humidity, etc. and is not an indication
of a problem with the icemaker.
MAINTENANCE
Periodically vacuum dust and dirt from the condenser,
located behind louvered grill at the bottom front of
the unit; taking care not to damage aluminum fins in
the process. Regularly inspect plumbing connections
to insure that no leaks are present.
When necessary, defrost and thoroughly clean the
inside of the unit with mild soap and water. Do not
use electrical heating devices, sharp or pointed tools
when defrosting. When defrosting or leaving the unit
turned off, prop and leave the door open using door
lock link. This allows air to dry the inside of the
cabinet, reducing the chance for mildew and damage
to the mold mechanism's components.
WINTERIZING
WARNING: Disconnect power at source before
working on the unit. Do not winterize this unit
with ANY type of anti-freeze; damage to the mold
coating will occur, invalidating product's Limited
Warranty and creating potential health hazard.
1. Shut off the water supply to the unit.
2. Disconnect as follows:
Model 85: Disconnect water supply connector behind
front grille at solenoid valve (garden hose connector).
Remove white plastic tubing and nut from bottom of
solenoid valve.
Model 84: Disconnect the in-line water supply
connector behind the front grille.
3. Turn power on. Allow unit to run for an hour.
Remove any cubes that may have been ejected

Overview

The Raritan Icer-ette Model 84 and 85 are automatic ice cube makers specifically designed and manufactured for the marine environment. These units are engineered to produce crescent-shaped ice and offer two cabinet configurations to accommodate various installation needs, including counter height and limited height spaces. A key design feature is that no drain is required, simplifying installation. The thermostat is fixed, eliminating the need for manual adjustments.

Function Description

The Icer-ette's primary function is to automatically produce and store ice cubes. Once the unit is turned on via the switch located just beneath the door, it typically begins ice production within 60 minutes. The ice production process is automated: it stops when the ice bucket is full enough to interfere with a wire shut-off arm, indicating that the storage capacity has been reached. The unit should not be turned off while the door is closed and ice or water are inside, as this can lead to issues.

The ice-making process involves a fan and compressor that activate upon start-up, circulating air through the grille and producing a faint hum. If the machine was previously shut off during an ice harvesting cycle, it will first complete that cycle (approximately 5 minutes) before the compressor and fan fully engage. The internal temperature will drop below freezing, and the first batch of ice is usually harvested within 60 minutes. After the water lines are purged of air, normal harvesting and refilling cycles occur every 40 minutes or less under typical operating conditions.

Usage Features

The Icer-ette is designed for straightforward use. The on-off switch is easily accessible beneath the door. For built-in installations, a minimum of 3/4" (2cm) clearance is required behind the unit for the water line and plug. The units are designed for zero clearance at the top and sides, utilizing fan-forced condenser cooling, which necessitates proper air circulation through the lower section of the unit. Recirculation between the fresh air intake and exhaust air must be prevented to ensure optimal performance.

The unit must be placed on a secure, level surface, and the mounting flange should not be used to support its weight. When installing within cabinetry, it's important to ensure that the unit can be easily removed for servicing and that the door has its full range of motion. While doors are hinged on the right, they can be reversed in the field if needed.

For plumbing, a minimum water pressure of 22 P.S.I. (152kPa) is required for the water valve to operate correctly. Model 85 units require removing the front grille to run a 1/4" O.D. water line through a provided hole at the rear of the cabinet and attach it to the garden hose adapter on the solenoid water valve. Model 84 units come with an 18" (45cm) water line extending from the back with a 1/4" plastic female compression fitting. No drains are required, only a water supply.

The Icer-ette operates on 120 volts 60 HZ AC (alternating current) with a three-wire grounded plug, or 240 volts 50HZ AC (alternating current) with a Euro-plug. Extension cords or plug adapters should not be used, and the ground prong should never be removed from the plug to prevent electric shock hazards.

A few notes on ice quality: due to fast freezing, ice cubes may appear "cloudy" due to trapped air, which does not affect taste or quality. "Hollow" ice cubes can also occur under certain climatic conditions like high humidity and are not an indication of a problem with the icemaker.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of the Icer-ette. Periodically, dust and dirt should be vacuumed from the condenser, which is located behind the louvered grill at the bottom front of the unit. Care must be taken not to damage the aluminum fins during this process. Plumbing connections should be regularly inspected to ensure there are no leaks.

When necessary, the inside of the unit should be defrosted and thoroughly cleaned with mild soap and water. It is important not to use electrical heating devices or sharp/pointed tools for defrosting. When defrosting or leaving the unit turned off, the door should be propped open using the door lock link. This allows air to circulate and dry the inside of the cabinet, reducing the chance of mildew and preventing damage to the mold mechanism's components.

For winterizing, it is critical to disconnect power at the source before working on the unit. Anti-freeze of any type should NOT be used to winterize this unit, as it will damage the mold coating, invalidate the product's Limited Warranty, and create a potential health hazard. The winterizing process involves shutting off the water supply, disconnecting the water supply connector (at the solenoid valve for Model 85, or the in-line connector for Model 84), and then turning on power to allow the unit to run for an hour. Any ejected cubes should be removed. After this, turn off power, prop the door open to defrost, wipe dry, and leave the door open.

For recommissioning, simply connect the water supply lines, turn on the water, check for leaks, and then restore power to the unit. After an initial cool-down period of 45-60 minutes, the unit will resume its normal cycle of approximately every 40 minutes.
