Do you have a question about the Raytheon Anschütz Synapsis Conning NX and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Synapsis Conning NX is an integrated navigation system (INS) central display and information system designed for ship command and control. It is primarily used for nautical tasks such as navigation data control, status display, and central alert management (CAM-HMI). The system is aligned with Synapsis INS, Radar NX, and ECDIS NX and can be placed in a Multifunction Console (MFC).

Function Description

The Synapsis Conning NX provides a comprehensive overview of critical ship data and operational parameters. Its core function is to consolidate and display information from various sensors and systems, offering the operator a centralized interface for navigation and monitoring. The system supports different user modes (Normal, Mariner, Service) with varying levels of configuration permissions.

The system's display pages include:

  • Navigation Control Data (Nav): Shows current position, course over ground (COG), speed over ground (SOG), speed through water (STW), heading, turn rate, and steering mode.
  • System Status (Status): Presents a block diagram of the SYNAPSIS INS, illustrating the current state of all applications, units, and interfaces using different colors to indicate status.
  • Sensor Selection (Sensor): Displays all connected sensors within the SYNAPSIS INS, allowing for automatic or manual sensor selection. The Consistent Common Reference System (CCRS) constantly checks sensor quality and provides a quality indicator.
  • Automatic Identification System Messages (AIS): Displays safety-related and text messages from the AIS, limited to 100 messages with a maximum age of two months.
  • Central Alert Management (CAM): Reads and displays all current navigational and system alarms, warnings, and messages in a table format, showing alert symbol, source, description, and time of detection.
  • Navigational Text Messages (NavTex): Displays all NavTex messages, limited to 100 messages with a maximum age of two months.
  • Alert History (AlertHist): Stores all emergency alarms, alarms, warnings, and caution messages for the last 24 hours, including solved alerts.
  • Safety Related and S&R Messages (Safety): Displays safety-related AIS and NavTex search and rescue messages.
  • Voyage Plan Data (Voyage): An optional and ship-specific page that provides fall-back information if the track control system does not deliver track information.
  • Docking Display (Docking): An optional and ship-specific page that displays a sea chart and relevant docking information. It is not intended for navigation and does not replace a proper lookout or full ECDIS functions.
  • CCTV: An optional feature that displays camera images on the SYNAPSIS CONNING NX desktop. This video feed is not for safety-critical applications and may have latency or be lost.
  • Primary Display: Can show ENGINE RPM and SHAFT RPM, RPM/PITCH (for ahead/astern or port/starboard orientation), Rudder Angle Indicators, and Turnrate.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Software Version: E05.03 and higher.
  • Standards Compliance: IEC60945 (Maritime Navigation and Radiocommunication Equipment and Systems).
  • Alert Management: Displays up to 20 alerts, with additional alerts viewable by scrolling. Alerts are categorized (A, B, C) and prioritized (Emergency, Alarm, Warning, Caution).
  • Data Archiving: Long-term archiving of alerts for one month is possible if enabled.
  • Remote Diagnostics: An optional feature allowing encrypted point-to-point connection between the ship and Raytheon Anschütz Kiel via WLAN, SATCOM, or Landline for service engineers to access the Synapsis System. Operation time is limited to 5 minutes, and a reboot is required after finishing.
  • License Management: Features require a valid license. The system includes a "License Desk" for requesting, importing, and exporting licenses. Importing licenses is prohibited during voyage.

Usage Features

  • Trackball Functions: The primary input device for cursor placement and activating softkey functions (left and right buttons). The middle button has no function for the Conning NX application.
  • Menu Bar: Located at the top right corner of the display, providing access to general settings.
  • Color Palettes: Allows changing display colors for different conditions (Bright Sun, Day-White, Day-Black, Dusk, Night).
  • Dimming Adjustment: Central or local dimming can be adjusted via a slider. Remote dimming is an optional feature for controlling multiple consoles from a central location.
  • Profile Administration: Enables loading and modifying different profiles (Predefined Settings for sea areas/route characteristics, User Settings for user modifications).
  • Time Settings: Allows adjustment of local time zone, though it is inactive if connected to a position sensor or central clock with local time data.
  • Alarm Transfer to BNWAS: Escalation time for transferring alarms to the Bridge Navigation Watch Alarm System (BNWAS) is adjustable up to 12 minutes.
  • Depth Alert: Adjustable and enablable alert threshold for depth under the keel.
  • Eject USB Drive: Provides a safe method to eject connected USB drives.
  • Show Software Information: Displays installation date and software version.
  • Login with Different User Modes: Supports Normal, Mariner, and Service modes with distinct permissions.
  • MFC Task Switch: Located at the top right, it expands to a pull-down menu for direct access to ECDIS, Radar, and Conning NX pages, as well as application control (start, restart, shutdown).
  • Filter Settings: Two types of filters (find and ignore) are available to display or hide selected attributes in alert lists.
  • Export Function: Allows exporting current alert lists, 24-hour alert history, and long-term archived alerts.
  • Chart Options (Docking Display): Provides settings for display type (Base, Standard, Full, Custom), heading line, SOG vector, ship outline, and route overlay. Compact controls mode is available, set by a service technician.

Maintenance Features

  • Remote Diagnostics: Allows service technicians to access the system remotely for troubleshooting, reading log data, and addressing application problems. This feature is restricted to harbor or anchor situations and requires telephone and constant internet contact.
  • License Desk: Facilitates the management of software licenses, including requests, imports, and exports, which are crucial for enabling and maintaining system functionalities.
  • Backup of Licenses: When a new license is imported, the previously active license is automatically stored in a configured backup directory, ensuring license integrity and recovery options.
