Overview

This document provides installation and safety instructions for RECOM Photovoltaic Modules, specifically designed for use in the United States, Canada, and for IEC version applications. The manual serves as a comprehensive guide for installers, ensuring safe and correct installation and maintenance of the modules to guarantee long-term clean energy production.

Function Description:

RECOM Photovoltaic Modules are designed to convert light energy into direct current (DC) electrical energy. They are intended for outdoor use and can be mounted in various configurations, including ground-mounted, rooftop, vehicle, or boat installations. The modules are manufactured to high-quality standards, ensuring reliable performance over many years when properly installed and maintained. The manual covers specific module series:

  • 60 Cell Monocrystalline Silicon Modules: RCM-xxx-6MB (xxx=250-310)
  • 60 Cell Polycrystalline Silicon Modules: RCM-xxx-6PB (xxx=240-280)
  • 72 Cell Monocrystalline Silicon Modules: RCM-xxx-6MA (xxx=290-360)
  • 72 Cell Polycrystalline Silicon Modules: RCM-xxx-6PA (xxx=290-340)

Important Technical Specifications:

The modules are equipped with sealed junction boxes, pre-attached cables, and locking connectors, which should not be modified.

  • Electrical Characteristics: Under standard test conditions (STC - irradiance of 100mW/cm², AM 1.5 spectrum, cell temperature 25°C (77°F)), electrical characteristics are within ±5% of the indicated values for Isc (short-circuit current) and Voc (open-circuit voltage). Pmax (maximum power) ranges between 0% to +3% of the rated Pmax at STC.
  • Voltage Output: A single module can generate over 30V DC when exposed to direct sunlight, with some models rated for 1000 V UL and 1000 V IEC. Installers should multiply specified ratings by a minimum of 1.25 or more when designing the system to account for varying operating conditions.
  • Wiring: The maximum operating temperature of the wires and connectors should not exceed 85°C. For field connections, a minimum of #12 AWG/4 mm² copper wires, insulated for a minimum of 85°C, are required.
  • Overcurrent Protection: Each parallel string must include overcurrent protection with a maximum rating of 15 A, utilizing DC-rated fuses or overcurrent protection devices with the appropriate maximum voltage rating.
  • Mounting Loads:
    • Case 1 (Perpendicular Rails): Maximum Rear Load: 2400 Pa (50 psf), Maximum Front Load: 5400 Pa (113 psf). Fixed bolt locations for 5400 Pa front load. Fixed clamp location for 2400 Pa front load.
    • Case 2 (Parallel Rails): Maximum Rear Load: 2400 Pa (50 psf), Maximum Front Load: 5400 Pa (113 psf).
    • Case 3 (AP90 V1.5/ATI Tracker Mounting): Maximum Rear Load: 2400 Pa (50 psf), Maximum Front Load: 2400 Pa (50 psf).
    • Case 4 (NexTracker Center Mounting with Rails): Maximum Rear Load: 2400 Pa (50 psf), Maximum Front Load: 2400 Pa (50 psf). Special mounting holes are provided for NexTracker use only.
  • Module Dimensions (RCM 330/335/340/345/350/355-6MA):
    • Length (B): 1,976 mm (77.8 inches)
    • Width (A): 990 mm (39.0 inches)
    • Frame Thickness (C, D, E): 35 mm (1.38 inches)
  • Mounting Hole Spacing:
    • F: 950 mm (37.4 inches)
    • G: 1,188 mm (46.8 inches)
    • P: 400 mm (15.7 inches)
  • Cable Length (H): 1,300 mm (51.2 inches)
  • Module Weight: 21.2 Kg
  • Frame Material: Anodized aluminum alloy
  • Glass Thickness: Tempered ARC Glass, 3.2 mm
  • Connector Types: Amphenol H4 (-39)
  • Fire Resistance Rating: Class Per UL 1703.

Usage Features:

  • Installation Flexibility: Modules can be mounted using four bolts through rear mounting holes or with four clamps over the front side. Clamps can be mounted anywhere within specified safe ranges.
  • Optimal Performance: Modules produce maximum power when pointed directly at the sun and should be tilted for optimum system performance. Designs should allow adequate airflow across the back of the module to prevent decreased energy yield due to elevated temperatures.
  • Thermal Expansion: A minimum spacing of 10 mm between modules is required for thermal expansion.
  • Grounding: Module frames and structures must be grounded in compliance with national and local regulations. RECOM recommends grounding all module frames to maintain a zero-voltage potential. The coated aluminum frame requires penetration for proper grounding. Predrilled grounding holes (Ø4.5 mm, 6 places) are provided and should be used exclusively for grounding. A copper grounding wire with a minimum gauge of 12 AWG is recommended.
  • Wire Management: A wire management system is crucial to keep wires and cables out of direct contact with sharp surfaces to prevent damage to insulation. Wires should not rest on the ground or roof surface.
  • Polarity: Always wire modules to maintain proper polarity.
  • Series and Parallel Connections: There is no limit to the maximum number of series strings that can be combined in parallel, but each string requires overcurrent protection. The maximum number of modules in series is determined by the formula Ns = Vmaxs/Vocm.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspection: Check modules regularly for any damages to glass surfaces and frames. Inspect electrical and mechanical connections for soundness, and check for shading or corrosion issues.
  • Cleaning: If dirt or debris accumulates, clean the glass using only a soft cloth, mild, non-abrasive detergent, and water. RECOM recommends cleaning liquids with a neutral pH (6.0 to 8.0). Avoid chemicals with pH less than 6.0 or greater than 8.0, as they may damage the glass surface or anti-reflective coating. Do not power wash, use harsh cleaning materials, or coarse objects, as this will void the product warranty. Avoid washing modules with water more than 20 °C cooler than the module surface to prevent glass cracking.
  • Troubleshooting: In case of issues, follow a systematic troubleshooting process including planning, checking, disconnecting (under safe conditions), cause seeking, replacement, and record keeping.
  • Decommissioning and Recycling: When decommissioning, the same care and safety precautions used during installation must be followed. PV systems can generate hazardous voltage even after disconnection. Modules should be recycled at the end of their life according to local guidelines and regulations.

Safety Guidelines:

  • Installation must be performed by qualified personnel in compliance with all applicable regional, local, national, and international electrical codes.
  • Use only insulated tools.
  • Wear suitable protection to prevent direct contact with electrical output and sharp edges.
  • Cover the front of modules with opaque material to stop electricity production during installation or work.
  • Do not disconnect modules under illumination to avoid electrical arcing.
  • Do not install or handle modules when wet or during high winds.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble, repair, or open any part of the module.
  • Do not artificially concentrate sunlight on modules.
  • Do not install or handle broken modules.
  • Do not wear rings, jewelry, watches, or other metallic items while working with PV modules.
  • Do not stand, step, walk, or jump on modules.
  • Do not place or drop objects on modules.
  • Handle modules by their frame with two or more people; do not carry by wires or junction box.
  • Avoid scratching, handling marks, or any other damage to the front glass, back sheet, or electrical components.
  • Do not mark modules with sharp instruments.
  • Do not modify module frames or drill additional holes.
  • Ensure frame weep holes are not obstructed.
  • Maintain a minimum clearance of 152 mm between the roof and the bottom of the module frame.
