The Remington Precision Professionally Styled Home Haircut Kit is a hair clipper designed for home use, offering a range of features for various hair styles and grooming needs. It is available in several models, including HC-810, HC-815, HC-8017, HC-912, HC-918, HC-920, HC-921, and HC-930.
Function Description:
The primary function of this device is to cut and trim hair, beards, and mustaches at home. It is designed to provide a "Superior Cut Every Time," allowing users to maintain various hair styles with ease and precision. The kit includes a hair clipper, various guide combs for different hair lengths, and additional grooming accessories depending on the specific model.
Important Technical Specifications:
The clipper is designed for use with 110-120 Volts AC, 60 HZ electrical outlets. Models HC-920 and HC-930 offer cordless operation, requiring a 14-hour charge before initial use. The device features a polarized plug (one blade wider than the other) as a safety feature. The blades on most models (HC-815, HC-8017, HC-912, HC-918, HC-920, HC-921, and HC-930) are "lubed for life" and do not require additional oil. However, the HC-810 model requires oiling before every haircut. The device should not be stored in temperatures exceeding 140°F (60°C).
Usage Features:
The kit comes with a variety of guide combs, ranging from 1/8" (3mm) to 1" (25mm), allowing for precise control over hair length. Specific models include ear guides (left and right), barber's combs, styling combs, scissors, sectioning clips, a neck brush, a cleaning brush, and lubricating oil (for HC-810). Some models also include a barber's cape, a storage case, a power cord adaptor, a personal groomer, beard combs, and a nose & ear trimmer.
To use the clipper, ensure it is oiled (if HC-810) and running smoothly. The person receiving the haircut should be seated with their head at eye level, and their hair should be combed and dry. The clipper should be held in the palm of one hand with the thumb resting firmly on top for comfortable control.
Attaching Trimming Guides:
Select the desired trimming guide based on the desired hair length. With the clipper off, hold the trimming guide with the teeth up and slide it onto the blades until it locks into place.
Giving a Haircut:
- Even Cut: Allow the clipper to cut through the hair without moving it too quickly to avoid pulling. Use short strokes and start with the longest trimming guide, then switch to a shorter one if a closer cut is desired.
- Starting: Begin at the back of the head, stroking upward in layers to the crown. Comb out loose hair and check for uneven areas. Repeat on both sides, ensuring even length.
- Top of the Head: Hold hair between fingers and cut small amounts at a time, working from front to back.
- Around the Ears and Nape: For models HC-918, HC-920, HC-921, HC-930, or HC-8017, remove the trimming guide and use the left or right ear guide, with shorter teeth toward the ear. Move the clipper from front to back around the ear to create a tapered effect. For HC-810 and HC-815, remove the trimming guide and angle the clipper, stroking lightly around each ear to the back of the neck, being careful not to touch the ears.
- Final Trim: The final trim can be done with the hair clipper or included scissors. Check for uneven areas. For styled hair or quick trims, the clipper can be used without a trimming guide.
- Adjustable Taper Control Lever: This lever allows for gradual changes in cut closeness. Fully forward provides the closest cut, while moving it backward increases the cut length.
- Very Short Styles: For a 1/2" (12mm) cut, hold the comb flat against the head and move the clipper from the back of the neck to the crown, then from the side to the top, and front to crown. For a "Flat Top" style, remove the trimming guide and use the barber's comb, trimming gradually.
Trimming Beards & Mustaches:
- Comb the beard in the direction it grows.
- Select the appropriate trimming guide. The 1/8" (3mm) guide provides the shortest beard, while the 1/2" (12mm) or 1" (25mm) guides offer longer lengths. A barber's comb can be used for even longer beards.
- Start trimming under the chin and work toward the ear and beard line, cutting in different directions for a uniform trim.
- Lightly stroke the edge of the mustache in a downward movement.
Maintenance Features:
- Blade Care: The lifespan of the blades depends on frequency of use, care, oil application, and hair type/condition. Blades should be replaced if cutting efficiency deteriorates.
- Oiling (HC-810 only): The HC-810 blades should be oiled before every haircut by placing a few drops of oil on the teeth. Insufficient oiling can cause cutting problems, premature wear, and a pulling sensation on the hair.
- Oil Cautions: Use only the supplied light-grade oil or a suitable alternative like sewing machine oil. Do not use hair oil, grease, or oils mixed with kerosene or solvent, as these can evaporate and slow down the blades.
- Cleaning: Unplug the appliance before cleaning it. A cleaning brush is included in most kits.
- Storage: Always store the appliance and cord in a moisture-free area. Do not wrap the cord around the appliance.
- Battery Removal (HC-920 and HC-930 only): When the rechargeable clipper reaches the end of its useful life, the Ni-Cd batteries must be removed and recycled or disposed of properly according to local and state requirements. To remove batteries:
- Ensure the clipper is unplugged.
- Remove the decorative plug from the back cover.
- Use a small Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screw from the back.
- Gently pry the clipper halves apart to expose the batteries.
- Remove batteries from the unit.
- Twist or cut wires to detach batteries.
- Caution: Ni-Cd batteries must be recycled or disposed of properly. Do not burn or mutilate them, as they may burst or release toxic materials. Do not short-circuit. Remington participates in the RBRC® Battery Recycling Seal program for Ni-Cd battery recycling.
