Introduction
Air Quality in the Home
On average, a person may spend up to 90 percent of his or her time indoors. While
most are aware that outdoor air pollution can aect health, many do not realize that
indoor air pollutants can do the same.
Studies of human exposure to air pollutants by the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency indicate that indoor levels of pollutants may be 2 to 5 times higher
than outdoor pollutant levels, making indoor air pollution one of the top ve
environmental health risks.
The best way to address this risk is to control or eliminate sources of pollutants and
ventilate a home with clean outdoor air. However, opportunities for ventilation may
be limited by weather conditions or by contaminants in the outdoor air. If the usual
methods of addressing indoor air pollution are not sucient, air-cleaning devices may
be useful.
