TECHNICIAN’S QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE
R7284 Series
Electronic Oil Primary
The following service procedures will help you become familiar
with the R7284 electronic oil primary controls. For control
operation, please refer to the basic control functions described on
the back. For further information, wiring instructions and
troubleshooting, please refer to the R7284 Installation
Instructions, form number 69-2467.
Pump Priming Cycle
To facilitate purging air from the oil lines and filters, the R7284
can be placed in a purge routine by pressing and releasing the up
arrow button during the Trial For Ignition.
In the advanced interface “PUMP PRIME” is displayed on the
display along with the time left on the Trial for Ignition (TFI).
Pressing the up arrow button adds a minute to the TFI time for a
maximum of 10 additional minutes (press the up arrow button
10 times). Pressing the down arrow button subtracts a minute
from the TFI time.
There is no visual indication for the basic interface control and
the purge timing is limited to five minutes.
Home Screens (Advanced Interface)
Pressing the “i” button longer than 2 seconds in states other than
Standby Interrupts control operation.
Once the held key is released a 3 second count down begins to
restart the cycle if the call for heat is still present.

Overview

The Resideo R7284 Series Electronic Oil Primary is a control device designed to manage and monitor the operation of oil-fired heating systems. It serves as the central control for various functions, including ignition, flame sensing, and system diagnostics, ensuring safe and efficient operation. This device is available in both basic and advanced interface models, offering different levels of user interaction and diagnostic capabilities.

Function Description:

The primary function of the R7284 is to sequence the operation of an oil burner, from receiving a call for heat to establishing and maintaining a stable flame. It incorporates a Trial For Ignition (TFI) period during which it attempts to ignite the oil burner. If ignition is not established within this period, or if the flame is lost during operation, the control will initiate a lockout state to prevent unsafe conditions.

A key feature is the Pump Priming Cycle, which facilitates the purging of air from oil lines and filters. In the advanced interface, this cycle displays "PUMP PRIME" along with the remaining TFI time. Users can extend the pump prime time by pressing the up arrow button, adding one minute per press up to a maximum of 10 additional minutes. Conversely, the down arrow button subtracts a minute. For the basic interface, the purge timing is limited to five minutes without visual indication.

The R7284 also includes lockout mechanisms to ensure safety. A "Soft Lockout" allows the control to recover automatically once the error clears or after a specified time. A "Hard Lockout" requires manual reset by holding the "i" button for at least 2 seconds. In cases of "Hard Lockout Call Service," holding the "i" button for more than 10 seconds returns the control to Standby.

Important Technical Specifications:

While specific electrical ratings are not detailed in this document, the manual highlights several adjustable parameters and operational timings:

  • Valve On Delay: Adjustable in five-second increments.
  • Ignition Time (Lockout Time): Adjustable, but only during the first 100 cycles of operation. After 100 cycles, this parameter becomes locked and cannot be modified.
  • Burner Off Delay: Adjustable in 15-second increments, ranging from 0 to 8 minutes.
  • Allowed Resets: Configurable for 0, 1, 3, or "NOLIM" (no limit) before a Restricted Lockout occurs.
  • Spark Control: Options to control sparking during the On Delay period and during Run mode (Interrupted vs. Intermittent ignition).
  • TT Terminals Configuration: Allows electronic jumpering of TT terminals, eliminating the need for a physical jumper.
  • Appliance Type: Configurable for boiler, furnace, or water heater, particularly for EnviraCOM™ integration.

Usage Features:

The R7284 offers different user interfaces:

Advanced Interface:

  • Home Screens: Pressing the "i" button for longer than 2 seconds (in states other than Standby) interrupts control operation. Releasing the key initiates a 3-second countdown to restart the cycle if a call for heat is present.
  • Installer Setup (ISU) Mode: Accessed by simultaneously pushing all three buttons for 2 seconds. This mode allows for configuration of various parameters.
    • If "QUIT" is selected in Installer Setup, an "i" button press displays the Re-baseline option.
    • If "CONT" is selected, an "i" button press proceeds to "Installer Setup."
    • Parameters not available for adjustment will display "Locked."
  • Diagnostic Screen: Accessed by pressing "i" in any state if diagnostics are enabled outside of Installer Setup.
  • Error History: Accessed by pressing up or down in any screen if diagnostics are enabled outside of Installer Setup.
  • Language Selection: Allows selection between English, French, or Spanish using the up or down buttons and the "i" button to select.
  • Show Diagnostics: Enables or disables advanced diagnostics mode and error history. If disabled, error history and diagnostics are only accessible via Installer Setup.
  • Re-baseline: If "QUIT" is selected from Installer Setup, the user is prompted to rebaseline the control.

The advanced interface provides a clear progression of screens during a normal cycle, including STANDBY, CALL FOR HEAT, VALVE ON DELAY, IGNITION TRIAL, PUMP PRIME, RUNNING (with ohms reading), and BURNER OFF DELAY.

Basic User Interface:

This interface consists of 3 buttons and an LED, providing simpler diagnostic information through button interaction and LED codes.

  • LED Codes:
    • Standby: Pulse (1/4 sec ON, 4 sec OFF)
    • Call for Heat: Heartbeat (1/2 sec bright, 1/2 sec dim)
    • Flame proven: On solid
    • Recycle: 2 second ON, 2 second OFF flashing
    • Lockout: 1/2 second ON, 1/2 second OFF flashing
    • Interrupt: OFF
  • Button Functions:
    • "i" button: Flame Strength Indication
    • Up button: Most recent error
    • Down button: Next most recent error

Maintenance Features:

The R7284 incorporates features that aid in troubleshooting and maintenance:

  • Error History Screens (Advanced Interface): Allows technicians to view past errors. Pressing the up button from the home screen displays the most recent error ("ERROR 1"). Subsequent presses show older errors ("ERROR 2," "EXCEEDED MAX RECYCLES," "5 CYCLES AGO"). These screens transition every 3 seconds. Pressing "i" returns to the Normal Screen. If no more errors are logged, "Error History End" is displayed.
  • Flame Strength Indication (Basic Interface): During normal operation in the Running state, the LED indicates the CAD cell resistance, providing insight into flame quality.
    • 1 flash: Cad Cell less than 400Ω
    • 2 flashes: 400Ω < Cad Cell < 800Ω
    • 3 flashes: 800Ω < Cad Cell < 1600Ω
    • 4 flashes: 1600Ω < Cad Cell < 6100Ω
    • No flashes: Cad Cell > 6100Ω
  • Error History (Basic Interface): The last two errors are available for display via the LED. Pressing the up arrow button shows the most recent error, and the down arrow button shows the next most recent error. The LED blinks the error code.
  • Error Codes (Basic Interface):
    • 1 flash: No ignition / Late ignition
    • 2 flashes: Max flame losses / Cad Cell high while running
    • 3 flashes: Flame out of sequence
    • 4 flashes: Low Voltage / EnviraCOM™ error
    • 5 flashes: Internal Error

These diagnostic and historical data features allow technicians to quickly identify and address issues, reducing downtime and facilitating efficient servicing of oil-fired heating systems. The ability to adjust various operational parameters through the Installer Setup mode also provides flexibility for optimizing the control for specific applications and system requirements.
