This document is the user's manual for the Retrospec Jax Rev -500W electric bicycle. It provides comprehensive information on the mechanical and electrical operation, maintenance, and safety guidelines for the e-bike.

Function Description:

The Retrospec Jax Rev -500W is a pedal-electric assistance bicycle designed for riding on roads or paved surfaces. It features an aluminum frame, a Li-Ion battery, a high-efficiency electric hub motor, and a controller with an electric pedal assistance system. This system supports normal pedaling and helps riders conserve energy, especially when starting the bike. The "Start Aid" function allows the bike to start moving at approximately 3.5 MPH (6 km/h) by pressing a button, or by pedaling one crank revolution. The e-bike is designed for a single rider and has a maximum weight capacity of 220 lbs (100 kg) for the rider and load.

  • Display Panel (KD58C): The handlebar-mounted display panel provides control and indicates various functions including:

  • Button Definitions: The display panel has three buttons (M, +, -) for MODE, UP, and DOWN functions.
  • Switching On/Off: Hold the MODE button for 2 seconds to switch ON/OFF. The system automatically switches off after 10 minutes of inactivity.
  • Display Interface: Cycles through Running Speed, Trip Distance, Trip Time, Average Speed, and Max Speed. Total Distance is added when the bike is stopped.
  • Push-Assistance Mode: Hold the DOWN button for 2 seconds to activate a uniform speed of 6 km/h, indicated by "P" on the screen. Releases when the button is let go.
  • Battery Installation: The battery is positioned on the rear of the frame seat tube, fixed by screws, and locked with a key.
  • Battery Charging: The battery can be charged while installed on the bike or removed for remote charging. The charging port is covered by a plastic cap.
  • Folding Mechanism: The bike features a folding frame with quick-release latches for easy unfolding and securing of the frame halves, handlebar, and pedals.
  • Adjustable Seat Height: The seat height can be adjusted using a quick-release lever, with clear limit lines on the seat post to prevent unsafe adjustments.
  • Adjustable Handlebar Height: The handlebar height can also be adjusted using a quick-release lever, with a limit line to ensure safe positioning.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Ride Checks: Always check nuts, bolts, quick-releases, brakes, steering, wheels, tires (condition and pressure), pedals, and reflectors before each ride.
  • Routine Maintenance Schedule:
    • Weekly (or as needed): Wash with warm soapy water, dry with a soft cloth. Inspect for damage. Check cranks, chain (lubricate lightly).
    • Monthly: Lightly oil exposed brake cables. Lightly oil pedal bearings.
    • Half-Yearly: Remove, clean, and lubricate chain and all cables. Check and replace as required. Remove, clean, and lubricate cranks.
    • Yearly: Remove, clean, and regrease headset/stem assembly. Replace parts/bearings as needed.
  • Tire Maintenance: Check for cuts and wear, maintain recommended pressure (found on sidewall). Ensure proper seating on the rim. Do not exceed max pressure or use compressed air devices for inflation.
  • Brake Maintenance: Lightly oil exposed cables monthly. Check rotors for straightness and security. Ensure no oil on rotors. Maintain and replace caliper pads and frayed cables.
  • Light Maintenance: Check front/rear lights for working condition and lens cracks. Replace if necessary.
  • Kickstand Maintenance: Check attaching bolt tightness and security in stowed position. Replace if necessary.
  • Electrical Parts Maintenance: Refer to Section II of the manual for specific care of the display panel, hub motor, and battery.
  • Battery Care:
    • Periodically check charge level on the display panel; charge immediately if 5% or less.
    • Ensure full charge before long trips.
    • For long-term storage, fully charge every 2-3 months.
    • Do not use metals to connect battery poles, avoid fire/heat, strong shaking/dropping.
    • Keep out of reach of children when removed from the bike.
    • Do NOT disassemble the battery.
  • Charger Care:
    • Use only the provided charger.
    • Avoid gas/corrosive environments, strong shaking/dropping, rain/moisture.
    • Ideal operating temperature: 14F-104F (-10°C to +40°C).
    • Do NOT disassemble the charger.
    • Ensure battery and charger are at least 4 inches (10 cm) from walls in a cool, ventilated environment during charging.
  • Hub Motor Care:
    • Avoid flood waters, heavy rain, or submerging in water.
    • Avoid impacts.
    • Regularly check and tighten screws on both sides of the hub motor.
    • Periodically check cable connections.
  • Controller Care:
    • Do not immerse or submerge in water.
    • Avoid strong shaking, slamming, or dropping.
    • Best operating temperatures: 5F-104F (-15°C to +40°C).
    • NEVER open, modify, or adjust the controller box; this voids the warranty.
  • Brake Lever Power-Off Control: Regularly check for secure fastening to the handlebar.
  • Professional Checks: Every six months, the e-bike should be professionally checked.
  • Serial Number: Located under the crank bottom bracket, important for recalls or theft.
  • Warranty: Electrical Components (excluding Battery): 2 years; Battery: 1 year; Frame and Fork: 1 year; All other components: 6 months. Warranty requires proof of purchase and applies only to original retail purchaser for defective components, not normal wear, accident, abuse, neglect, improper assembly/maintenance, or inconsistent additions.

Safety Tips:

  • Always wear an approved helmet.
  • Comply with local traffic laws.
  • Be aware of traffic conditions.
  • Rider must be over 14 years old.
  • Do not carry passengers.
  • Do not hang items over handlebars.
  • Do not hold onto other vehicles.
  • Maintain safe distance from other vehicles.
  • Wet Weather Riding: Brakes are less effective; ride slower and apply brakes in advance.
  • Night Riding: Avoid riding at night. If unavoidable, use approved headlights (white), taillights (red), all-around reflectors, and wear light-colored, reflective, or safety-colored clothing.
  • Component Wear: Inspect for cracks, scratches, or color changes in stressed areas; replace immediately if found.
  • Use only genuine replacement parts, installed by a professional mechanic.
  • Do not direct water spray at hubs, bearings, and electrical components, and NEVER use a high-pressure washer.
  • Start-Aid Function: Only use when pushing the e-bike; danger of injury if wheels are not on the ground.
  • Battery Safety: Never short-circuit, expose to fire/heat, or disassemble.
  • Charger Safety: Use only the provided charger, ensure ventilation during charging.
  • Controller Safety: Do not open or modify the controller.
