SWITCHING ON / CALIBRATING THE DEVICE
SCANNING IN BAR SCAN MODE
The device can be calibrated anywhere on the wall.
• Place the device against the wall before pressing the On/Off key.
• Press the On/Off button. The LCD display will always show the ½ inch scan mode.
Press the scan key to start the calibration. The decreasing indicator bars disappear and the buzzer beeps once
and the calibration is complete. Release the scan button and do not move your fingers. Hold the device flat against
the wall and start scanning.
Note: It is important to wait until the calibration is complete each time before moving the scanner. (approx. 2-3
seconds)
If no indicator bars appear on the display during scanning, the device was probably calibrated near or over a bar
and then moved away, or the wall is not flat. Move the device to another location and calibrate again.
Always scan in ½ inch scan mode flat against the wall. Press the Mode Selector button until you reach the desired
mode, place the instrument flat against the wall, and then press the Scan button. Wait for the indicator bars to go
out and the buzzing to stop when calibration is complete before moving the instrument.
Slowly move the instrument across the surface. An arrow and the edge indicators will appear in the display to
locate the position of the bar edge.
Continue to move the instrument slowly. When the center of a bar is located, the full display bars are shown and the
buzzing sound is heard.
For deeper bars (e.g. through thicker walls), the display bars will not be fully displayed when the center of the bar
has been located. If you did not locate a bar in ½ inch scan mode, try again in 1 inch scan mode or 1½ inch scan
mode.
AC LINE WARNING
The AC line warning operates continuously in ½ inch scan, 1 inch scan, 1½ inch scan and Metal Scan. When a live
AC line is detected, the AC detection warning indicator appears in the display. When scanning begins over a live
AC power line, the warning AC power line begins, the AC power line warning will be continuously displayed. Use
extreme caution under these circumstances or when live AC power lines are present.
WARNING: Electric field detectors may not detect live AC power lines if the lines are more than 51mm from the
scanned surface, are enclosed in concrete or (shielded) conduit, are present behind a plywood wall or metal wall
covering, or if moisture is present in the environment or scanned surface.
WARNING: Do not assume that there are no active live wires in the wall. Do not take any action that
could be dangerous if the wall contains or could contain active live wires. Always turn off power,
gas, and water supplies before penetrating a surface. Failure to follow these instructions may
result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury or property damage. Always turn off the power
supply when working near electrical wiring.
