Overview

The RIDGID 16 U.S. Gallon/60 Liter Wet/Dry Stainless Steel Vac, model 1610RV0, is a versatile household appliance designed for both wet and dry vacuuming, as well as blowing debris. This owner's manual provides comprehensive instructions for assembly, operation, and maintenance to ensure safe and effective use.

Function Description:

This Wet/Dry Vac is primarily used for cleaning tasks in a household setting. It can effectively vacuum both wet and dry materials, making it suitable for a wide range of spills and debris. Additionally, it features a blowing function, allowing it to clear sawdust and other loose debris from work areas. The device is double-insulated, eliminating the need for a separate grounding system, and is marked with the "DOUBLE INSULATED" symbol.

Important Safety Instructions:

Before operating the Vac, users must read and understand the entire manual and all labels on the device to reduce the risk of injury, fire, or electric shock.

  • General Safety: Never leave the Vac running unattended or plugged in when not in use. Unplug from the outlet before servicing. Immediately stop using the Vac if abnormal operation (loss of suction, debris/liquid exiting exhaust, abnormal motor noises) is observed.
  • Fire and Explosion Hazards: Sparks inside the motor can ignite flammable vapors or dust. Do not use near combustible liquids, gases, or dusts such as gasoline, lighter fluid, cleaners, oil-based paints, natural gas, coal dust, magnesium dust, grain dust, aluminum dust, or gun powder. Do not vacuum burning or smoking materials (cigarettes, matches, hot ashes) or explosive dusts.
  • Electric Shock Hazards: Do not expose the Vac to rain or allow liquid to enter the motor compartment. Store indoors. Do not handle the plug, switch, or Vac with wet hands. Unplug before servicing. If the Vac is damaged, has missing parts, or has been dropped into water, contact customer service.
  • Filter Usage: Do not vacuum drywall dust, cold fireplace ash, or other fine dusts with a standard filter, as these may pass through and be exhausted into the air. Use a fine dust filter instead for such materials. Do not use with a torn filter or without a filter installed, except when vacuuming liquids as described. Dry debris ingested by the impeller without a filter can damage the motor or be exhausted.
  • Extension Cords: Use only outdoor-rated extension cords in good condition. Ensure the cord connection does not contact liquid. Do not use cords smaller than 16 gauge (AWG); for lengths 25-50 ft, use 14 gauge; for 50 ft or longer, use 12 gauge.
  • Personal Safety: Wear safety eyewear (ANSI Z87.1 or CSA Z94.3) when operating the Vac or using it as a blower to prevent eye injury from foreign objects. Wear ear protectors for extended use or in noisy areas to prevent hearing damage. Wear a dust mask for dusty operations. Keep hair, loose clothing, fingers, and all body parts away from openings and moving parts.
  • Handling: Do not pull or carry the Vac by the cord, use the cord as a handle, close a door on the cord, or pull the cord around sharp edges or corners. Do not run the Vac over the cord. Keep the cord away from heated surfaces. Use extra care when cleaning on stairs. Do not lift a Vac heavy with liquid or debris; partially empty by scooping or draining liquid first.
  • Accessories: Use only RIDGID recommended accessories to reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the Vac.
  • Blowing Feature Specifics: Direct air discharge only at the work area. Do not direct air at bystanders. Keep children away when blowing. Do not use the blower for any job except blowing dirt and debris. Do not use as a sprayer.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Capacity: 16 U.S. Gallons / 60 Liters
  • Construction: Stainless Steel Drum
  • Insulation: Double-insulated (grounding not required)
  • Filter Type: Qwik Lock™™ Filter (VF5000 standard, fine dust filter recommended for fine dusts)
  • Power Cord: Polarized plug for electric shock reduction.
  • Wheels/Casters: Equipped with 8" wheels and 2" casters for mobility.

Usage Features:

  • Assembly: The manual details the assembly of the drum/caddy, including installing wheels, casters, and the metal handle. The metal handle comes packaged in reverse and must be reinstalled correctly.
  • Hose Insertion: The Pro-Hose connects to the inlet with a push-button mechanism, snapping into place. To remove, press the release button and pull.
  • Operation:
    • Power On/Off: The switch actuator uses international "On & Off" symbols: "O" for Off and "I" for On.
    • Vacuuming Dry Materials: The filter must always be in place. The VF5000 filter is installed for dry pickup. For very fine dust, frequent drum emptying and filter cleaning are necessary. A dry filter is crucial for dry material pickup; a wet filter will clog quickly.
    • Vacuuming Liquids: For small amounts, the filter can remain. For large amounts, removing the filter is recommended to prevent saturation and misting. The float mechanism automatically cuts off airflow when the liquid reaches a predetermined level, indicating it's time to empty the drum. Do not run the motor with the float in the raised position. Ensure the filter cage and float are installed to prevent liquid from damaging the motor.
    • Emptying the Drum: The Vac has a drain cap for easy liquid emptying. Alternatively, the powerhead assembly can be removed to dump contents. For heavy loads, partially drain or scoop out contents to make lifting comfortable.
    • Moving the Vac: Use the handles on the sides of the dust drum for lifting and the metal handle at the rear for maneuvering.
  • Blowing Feature: The Pro-Hose can be inserted into the blowing port. Optional extension wands and car nozzle can be attached for directed airflow.
  • Accessory and Hose Storage: Accessories can be stored in the storage bag or in designated locations on the caddy. The hose can be wrapped around the unit and plugged into a storage location on the caddy. Extension wands can also be stored on the caddy.
  • Cord Wrap: The power cord can be wrapped around the power assembly and under the cord wrap of the motor cover for storage.

Maintenance Features:

  • Filter Maintenance:
    • Cleaning Dry Filter: Dry debris can be removed by slapping the lid while the Vac is off. For accumulated dust, clean the filter outdoors by gently tapping it against the inside wall of the dust drum. For thorough cleaning of fine dust, run water through it.
    • Cleaning Wet Filter: After removal, run water through the filter from a hose or spigot, taking care not to damage it with strong pressure.
    • Installation: Allow the filter to dry completely before installing and storing.
    • Qwik Lock™™ Filter Removal/Installation: The filter tabs are used to lift and push down to release from/snap onto the Qwik Lock™™ stud on the filter cage. Ensure the rubber gasket at the bottom of the filter seats securely to prevent debris bypass.
    • Inspection: After cleaning, check the filter for tears or small holes. Replace damaged or worn filters immediately to prevent dust from escaping and motor damage. Always reinstall the filter before dry material pick-up.
  • Cleaning and Disinfecting the Wet/Dry Vac:
    • Exterior: Clean with a cloth dampened with warm water and mild soap.
    • Drum: Dump debris, wash thoroughly with warm water and mild soap, then wipe dry.
    • Disinfection: For prolonged storage or after waste water pickup, disinfect the drum with a solution of 1 gallon of water and 1 teaspoon chlorine bleach. Let stand for 20 minutes, swishing occasionally, then empty and rinse until the bleach smell is gone. Allow to dry completely before sealing the motor on the drum.
  • Cord Maintenance: Unplug and wrap the cord around the motor cover after use. If the power cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer or a qualified service agent to reduce accident risk.
  • Storage: Empty and clean the drum. Wrap the cord and store the hose and accessories as described. Store the Vac indoors.
  • Casters and Wheels: Apply two or three drops of general purpose oil to each wheel at the axle if the cart squeaks or becomes hard to roll. For noisy casters, apply oil to the roller shaft.
  • Frame and Handles: Wipe off liquids and corrosive debris from the metal handle with a soft cloth to prevent rust.
  • Repairs: All maintenance, repairs, or adjustments should be performed by authorized service centers using RIDGID replacement parts to ensure product safety and reliability.

Warranty:

The RIDGID Wet/Dry Vacs come with a Full Lifetime Warranty against material defects and workmanship. This warranty covers repair or replacement at Ridge Tool Company's option. If the Vac remains defective after three repair/replacement attempts, a full refund of the purchase price can be elected. The warranty does not cover failures due to misuse, abuse, or normal wear and tear. Ridge Tool Company is not responsible for incidental or consequential damages. The warranty is the sole and exclusive warranty for RIDGID Wet/Dry Vacs, and no employee, agent, dealer, or other person is authorized to alter it.
