Overview

This document provides the operator's manual for the RIDGID 18V 23 GA Headless Pin Nailer, model R09898. It includes safety warnings, instructions for use, and maintenance information in English, French, and Spanish.

Function Description:

The RIDGID 18V 23 GA Headless Pin Nailer is a cordless power tool designed for driving headless pin nails into various workpieces. It is intended for light wood assembly, finish and trim work, decorative moldings, picture frame assemblies, joint and dowel pinning, and window beading crafts. The tool features a dual activation trigger system, where both the secondary and primary triggers must be depressed in sequence to drive a fastener. It also includes a dry-fire lockout feature to prevent operation when the nail magazine is low or empty, and an LED worklight for improved visibility.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Magazine Capacity: 120 pin nails
  • Nail Type: 23 gauge
  • Headless Pin Nail Length: 1/2 - 1-3/8 in.
  • Power Source: 18V battery (specific battery packs and chargers listed in correlation supplement 988000-302)

Usage Features:

  • Personal Safety: Always wear eye protection (ANSI Z87.1 compliant) with side shields, and use other personal protective equipment like dust masks, non-skid safety shoes, hard hats, or hearing protection as appropriate for the working conditions. Keep children and bystanders away from the work area. Do not operate the tool while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication.
  • Work Area Safety: Keep the work area clean and well lit. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres.
  • Electrical Safety (for battery tools): Battery tools do not need to be plugged into an electrical outlet, meaning they are always in operating condition. Always remove the battery pack before making adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool to prevent accidental starting. Do not expose battery packs or tools to fire or excessive temperatures (above 265° F) to prevent explosion. Use only manufacturer-specified battery packs and chargers.
  • Tool Handling: Always assume the tool contains nails. Do not point the tool towards yourself or others. Actuate the tool only when it is placed firmly against the workpiece. Carry the tool by the handle. Do not use the tool as a hammer.
  • Belt Clip: The belt clip can be installed on either the left or right side of the nailer, depending on operator preference.
  • Battery Pack Installation/Removal: Align the raised ribs of the battery pack with the grooves inside the tool. Ensure latches snap into place. To remove, depress the latches on both sides of the battery pack.
  • No-Mar Pad: A no-mar pad is attached to the nose of the tool to prevent marring and denting on softer woods. It can be removed by pulling it up and away from the nose and replaced by fitting it over the nose and pushing down. An extra no-mar pad is stored on the tool's magazine.
  • Loading Pin Nails: Remove the battery pack. Point the nose of the tool away from yourself and others. Squeeze the magazine release button at the rear of the magazine and slide the cover open. Place pin nails in the channel with tips pointing down and away from the tool. Push the magazine cover closed until it snaps into place. Reinstall the battery pack and reactivate the nailer by pulling the secondary trigger.
  • Depth of Drive Adjustment: The depth adjustment knob controls how deep the nail is driven. Remove the battery pack, turn the knob left or right to adjust, reinstall the battery, and drive a test nail after each adjustment until the desired depth is set. Set the depth at the shallowest point that meets your needs.
  • Driving Pin Nails: Install the battery pack and activate the tool. Grip the tool firmly. Press the nose of the tool against the work surface. Pull the secondary trigger, then the primary trigger to drive a fastener. Allow the tool to recoil away from the work surface.
  • Dry-Fire Lockout: The tool will not operate when 0-10 nails remain in the magazine. The LED will flash rapidly when the last nail is used or when the dry-fire lockout is engaged and the trigger is pulled. Reload the tool with nails to resume operation.
  • LED Worklight: Press the secondary trigger while firmly holding the tool to activate the worklight.
  • Diagnostic Feedback: The LED worklight provides feedback on battery charge and tool function. A slow, continuous flash indicates a need for a fully charged battery.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Maintenance: Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts. Use clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, oil, and grease. Keep the tool and handle dry, clean, and free from oil and grease.
  • Cleaning the Nail Channel: If the tool does not drive a nail or cycles without driving a nail, glue residue from the nail strip may need to be cleaned.
    1. Remove the battery pack.
    2. Remove nails from the tool.
    3. Use the hex wrench to loosen the two bolts and remove the drive guide cover.
    4. Apply a small amount of air tool oil on a clean cloth or cotton swab to wipe down the nail channel, removing all traces of glue.
    5. Inspect the driver blade and guide for any damage. Do not operate the tool if damage is found.
    6. Reinstall the drive guide cover and bolts, ensuring they are secure.
    7. Reinstall nails in the tool and close the magazine.
  • Removing Nails from the Tool: Remove the battery pack. Depress the magazine release button and slide the magazine open. Remove nails. Close the magazine.
  • Removing a Jammed Pin Nail: Remove the battery pack. Open the magazine and remove nails. Use the hex wrench to loosen the two bolts and drive guide cover. Use needle nose pliers to remove the jammed nail. Inspect the driver blade for damage. Reinstall the drive guide cover and bolts, then reinstall nails and close the magazine. Reinstall the battery pack and reactivate the tool. If the driver blade is stuck at its bottom position, position the nose against a scrap piece of wood and squeeze the trigger.
  • Service: Have the power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. Never service damaged battery packs; this should only be done by the manufacturer or authorized service providers.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a troubleshooting table to address common issues such as the LED rapidly flashing, slow flashing, or no flash; tool operating but fasteners not driving fully; tool jamming frequently; tool not driving a fastener or cycling without driving one; and nails not driving properly. Solutions range from loading more nails and checking battery charge to cleaning the nail channel or taking the tool to an authorized repair center.
