Do you have a question about the RIDGID R8655 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The RIDGID R8655 is a 6-1/2 inch 18V Circular Saw, designed for cutting various wood products. It is a cordless power tool, emphasizing portability and ease of use without being tethered to a power outlet.

Function Description:

The circular saw is primarily used for cutting all types of wood products, including lumber, plywood, and paneling. It is capable of performing cross-cutting, rip-cutting, bevel-cutting, and pocket-cutting operations. The tool is designed for efficient and safe operation, incorporating features to prevent accidental starting and mitigate kickback. It includes a blade guard system for user protection and a vacuum attachment for dust extraction, enhancing cleanliness and reducing dust-related hazards in the work area.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Blade Diameter: 6-1/2 inches (165 mm)
  • Blade Arbor: 5/8 inches (16 mm)
  • Cutting Depth at 0°: 2-1/4 inches (57.2 mm)
  • Cutting Depth at 45°: 1-9/16 inches (39.7 mm)
  • Cutting Depth at 50°: 1-7/16 inches (36.5 mm)
  • No Load Speed (RPM): 3,700/min
  • Power Source: 18V battery pack (Li-ion)

Usage Features:

  • Cordless Operation: Powered by an 18V Li-ion battery pack, providing freedom of movement.
  • Safety Warnings: The manual emphasizes reading all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations, and specifications to prevent electric shock, fire, and serious injury.
  • Work Area Safety: Users are advised to keep the work area clean, well-lit, and free of children and bystanders. The tool should not be operated in explosive atmospheres.
  • Personal Safety: Always wear eye protection (ANSI Z87.1 compliant), and use other personal protective equipment like dust masks, non-skid safety shoes, hard hats, or hearing protection as appropriate. Maintain a firm grip with both hands on the saw and a balanced position to resist kickback forces. Avoid loose clothing or jewelry that could get caught in moving parts.
  • Battery Tool Use and Care: Only use battery packs and chargers specified by the manufacturer. Store idle battery packs away from metal objects to prevent shorting. Avoid contact with battery liquid in case of leakage.
  • Cutting Procedures:
    • Blade Depth Adjustment: The cutting depth should be adjusted to the workpiece thickness, with less than a full tooth of the blade teeth visible below the workpiece.
    • Workpiece Support: Secure the workpiece to a stable platform; never hold it in hands or across a leg.
    • Insulated Gripping Surfaces: Hold the tool by insulated gripping surfaces when cutting near hidden wiring to prevent electric shock.
    • Rip Fence/Straight Edge Guide: Always use a rip fence or straight edge guide for ripping to improve accuracy and reduce blade binding.
    • Blade Compatibility: Use blades with correct size and shape of arbor holes. Never use damaged or incorrect blade washers or bolts.
  • Kickback Prevention: Kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched, jammed, or misaligned saw blade. To prevent kickback, maintain a firm grip, position arms to resist forces, ensure correct blade depth, inspect the workpiece for knots or nails, make straight cuts, and use clean, sharp, and properly set blades.
  • Blade Guard System: The lower blade guard is a critical safety feature and should never be altered or tied in a raised position. It must move freely and return instantly to the closed position. Check its operation before each use.
  • Lock-Off Button: Reduces accidental starting. The lock-off button must be depressed before pulling the switch trigger. It resets each time the trigger is released.
  • Starting/Stopping the Saw: Depress the lock-off button, then squeeze the switch trigger. Always let the blade reach full speed before guiding it into the workpiece to prevent kickback. Release the trigger to stop the saw and allow the blade to come to a complete stop before removing it from the workpiece.
  • Adjusting Bevel Setting: The saw can be adjusted for bevel cuts from 0° to 50°. The bevel lock lever must be securely locked in place before making a cut.
  • Pocket Cutting: Adjust the bevel setting to zero and the blade to the correct depth. Raise the lower blade guard using its handle. Always cut in a forward direction during pocket cutting to prevent the saw from climbing up on the workpiece.
  • Vacuum Attachment: An included attachment allows for easy dust removal and disposal, fitting 1-1/4 in. and 1-7/8 in. vacuum hoses. It should be connected to a standard vacuum cleaner hose.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Maintenance: Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts, as most plastics are susceptible to damage. Use clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, oil, and grease. Do not allow brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-based products, or penetrating oils to contact plastic parts.
  • Servicing: When servicing, use only identical replacement parts to maintain safety and prevent product damage. Repairs should be performed by a qualified repair person. Never service damaged battery packs; this should only be done by the manufacturer or authorized service providers.
  • Safety During Maintenance: Always remove the battery pack from the product before cleaning or performing any maintenance to prevent accidental starting and serious injury. Always wear eye protection (ANSI Z87.1 compliant) during maintenance.
  • Blade Maintenance: Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Dull blades can cause heavy loads on the saw and increase kickback risk. Remove gum and wood pitch from blades using appropriate removers (not gasoline).
  • Storage: Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and persons unfamiliar with the tool.

Warranty and Support:

The product comes with a 90-day satisfaction guarantee policy and a three-year limited warranty. For warranty details or service, users can visit powertools.ridgid.com or call 1-866-539-1710.
