Do you have a question about the RIDGID WD40801 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document describes the RIDGID WD40801 4 U.S. Gallon / 15 Liter Detachable Wet/Dry Vac, an owner's manual provided in both English and Spanish. This versatile vacuum cleaner is designed for household use, capable of light vacuuming of both wet and dry materials, and can also function as a blower. Its lightweight design makes it suitable for most small household vacuuming chores.

Function Description:

The RIDGID WD40801 is a multi-functional wet/dry vacuum cleaner that offers both vacuuming and blowing capabilities. It features a detachable blower, allowing for separate use in tasks such as yard work, patio cleanup, and garage applications to clear dust and debris. The vacuum is designed for ease of use with a positive locking hose system and various accessories to suit different cleaning needs.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Capacity: 4 U.S. Gallons / 15 Liters
  • Electrical Ratings: 120 V, 10 A, 60 Hz
  • Insulation: Double-insulated, eliminating the need for a separate grounding system. This design requires identical replacement parts for servicing.
  • Filter Type: High-quality paper filter for dry pickup of small dust particles. A foam filter is recommended for high-volume liquid pickup.
  • Hose: Tug-A-Long Positive Locking Hose with Dual-Flex, providing secure attachment and flexibility.

Usage Features:

  • ON/OFF Switch: A polarized plug and a simple slide switch (marked "I" for ON and "0" for OFF) control the unit's power.
  • Wet/Dry Vacuuming:
    • Dry Materials: The standard paper filter is used for dry pickup. For fine dusts like drywall or cold fireplace ash, a fine dust filter is recommended to prevent particles from being exhausted back into the air. The drum and filter should be cleaned regularly for peak performance.
    • Liquid Materials: For small amounts of liquid (less than 2 inches / 5 cm in the dust drum), the standard filter can remain. For larger liquid volumes, all dry-use paper filters should be removed and replaced with a RIDGID wet application foam filter. The filter cage and float should not be removed, as they prevent liquid from damaging the motor. The float mechanism will rise and cut off airflow when the drum is full, indicating it's time to empty.
  • Detachable Blower:
    • Removal: To detach the blower, press down on the detachable blower latch located under the handle and lift the blower off the lid assembly.
    • Attachment: Position the blower above the indented area of the lid assembly, rotate it down until it stops, and lightly press on the carry handle until the latch snaps into place.
    • Blowing Operation: The blower wand can be inserted into the detachable blower port and locked by turning clockwise. Alternatively, the Tug-A-Long Positive Locking Hose with Dual-Flex can be attached to the blower port for extended reach, with optional extension wands and accessories.
  • Accessory Storage: The unit includes an accessory storage bin on the back to hold two extension wands, a car nozzle, and a blower wand. The utility nozzle can be stored on one of the extension wands.
  • Cord Storage: The power cord can be wrapped around the detachable blower cord wrap and secured with the cord clip on the polarized plug.
  • Hose Storage: The Tug-A-Long Positive Locking Hose with Dual-Flex can be wrapped around the powerhead assembly, with the small swivel end placed inside the larger one.

Maintenance Features:

  • Filter Cleaning and Replacement:
    • Removal: Place fingers under the two filter tabs, press down on the Qwik Lock™ Stud with a thumb, and lift the tabs until the filter releases. Slide the filter off the filter cage. The filter cage and float should remain in place.
    • Installation: Slide the Qwik Lock™ Filter over the filter cage, aligning the Qwik Lock™ Stud with the center hole of the integrated filter plate. Ensure the rubber gasket at the bottom of the filter seats around the base of the filter cage. Firmly press the integrated filter plate down until it snaps into place.
    • Dry Filter Cleaning: For light cleaning, tap the top of the lid while the vac is off. For thorough cleaning, remove the filter and gently tap it against the inside wall of the dust drum outdoors. For fine dust, water can be run through it as described for wet filters.
    • Wet Filter Cleaning: After removal, run water through the filter from a hose or spigot, taking care not to use strong pressure that could damage the filter.
    • Important: Always inspect the filter for tears or holes after cleaning and replace it if damaged. Allow the filter to dry completely before reinstalling for dry debris pickup or storage.
  • Detachable Blower Intake Cleaning:
    • After use, inspect the blower's bottom for dust and debris, particularly the plastic vents and foam pad.
    • To clean the foam pad, remove the three screws holding the intake shield, lift off the shield, and then lift the foam pad from the blower.
    • Clean the foam pad in warm soapy water or brush away debris, then allow it to dry.
    • Reinstall the foam pad, intake shield, and screws. The unit should not be operated without the intake shield reinstalled.
  • Dust Drum Emptying: Unplug the power cord. Lift the two drum latches and remove the powerhead assembly from the dust drum. Invert the powerhead assembly on a clean, dry surface while emptying the drum or changing the filter. Empty the drum contents into a proper waste disposal container. The dust drum should be emptied and cleaned before storing the vac.

Safety Precautions (General):

  • Read and understand the manual and all labels before operating.
  • Do not leave the vac running unattended or plugged in when not in use.
  • Do not operate near flammable liquids, gases, vapors, or explosive/airborne dusts.
  • Do not vacuum burning or smoking materials, toxic or hazardous materials, or hot ashes.
  • Empty the drum after each use, especially when vacuuming combustible materials like sawdust or rags with stain/urethane residue.
  • Do not expose to rain or allow liquid into the motor compartment; store indoors.
  • Wear safety eyewear to prevent eye injury from blown objects.
  • Wear ear protectors for extended use or in noisy areas.
  • Wear a dust mask for dusty operations.
  • Unplug the power cord before servicing or changing/cleaning the filter.
  • Do not pull the cord to unplug; grasp the plug.
  • Do not use with a damaged cord, plug, or other parts.
  • Use only outdoor-rated extension cords in good condition, with conductors no smaller than 1.3 mm² (16 AWG).
  • Keep hair, loose clothing, fingers, and all body parts away from openings and moving parts.
  • Do not operate without the filter cage and float, as they protect the motor from liquid.
  • Do not operate the vacuum while the hose is wrapped around the powerhead assembly in the storage position.
