Overview

This document is an installation and user manual for Rinnai temperature controllers, specifically models BC 70 2A, MC 70 2A, and MC 91 1A, designed for use with Rinnai Infinity and HD series hot water units. The controllers provide users with complete control over their hot water systems, allowing for temperature selection and various operational adjustments.

General Information on Temperature Controllers:

When installing the temperature controls, several factors should be considered for optimal performance and safety. Controllers should be fitted out of reach of children, with a suggested height of 1.5 meters from the floor. They should be positioned away from heat sources like stoves, ovens, and heaters to prevent overheating. Direct sunlight or bright lights should be avoided to ensure the digital display remains readable. Additionally, controllers should be placed away from areas prone to splashing by cooking products, oils, and fats, although they are water-resistant. Users should refer to the I.E.E electrical wiring regulations for specific location requirements in shower and bath areas.

The cables connecting the temperature controller carry only 12VDC (extra low voltage). These cables should run back to the Infinity unit or connect between controllers in a parallel configuration, then back to the heater. Polarity is not important when connecting the cables; either wire color can be connected to either terminal at the heater or primary temperature controller. The provided cable can be cut to length, and spade connectors should be fitted for a secure connection. If additional cable is needed, any cable with similar specifications can be used, with a maximum length of 50 meters.

Connecting Controllers:

  • One or Two Controllers:

    1. Isolate the power supply.
    2. Remove the front cover of the appliance (4 screws).
    3. Thread the cable(s) through the cable access hole at the base of the appliance.
    4. Connect the spade connectors to the terminals marked "Remote Control" on the printed circuit board. Polarity is not important.
    5. Replace the appliance cover, ensuring the screw with the star washer is placed at the bottom right corner for earthing.
  • Three Controllers:

    1. Isolate the power supply.
    2. Remove the front cover of the appliance (4 screws).
    3. Cut the spade connectors from two of the controller cables (four spade connectors in total) and discard them. Connect the wires from these two cables and terminate them into two new spade connectors as shown in figure 3. Spade connectors are available from local electrical component retailers.
    4. Thread the three cables through the cable access hole at the base of the appliance. Connect the four spade connectors to the terminals marked "Remote Control" on the printed circuit board. Polarity is not important.
    5. Replace the appliance cover, ensuring the screw with the star washer is placed at the bottom right corner for earthing.

Controller Options and Temperature Selection:

The temperature controllers allow for individual programming and setting of hot water temperatures from various locations. The selected temperature will be available at all outlets.

  • Kitchen Controller (MC-70-2A): Selectable temperatures include 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 48, 50, 55°C (and 60, 65°C for HD models).
  • Bathroom Controller (BC-70-2A):
    • Hot Water Delivery: 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 48, 50°C.
    • Bath Fill Delivery: 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48°C.

A safety feature limits the maximum selectable temperature to 43°C if a temperature of 43°C or higher is initially selected, then decreased below 43°C, and subsequently increased again while water is running.

Suggested starting temperatures are: Kitchen 50-55°C (65°C for HD), Shower 39-43°C, and Bath fill 39-45°C. Lower temperatures help save energy. Temperatures below 37°C can be achieved by adding cold water.

The document outlines controller configurations for different Rinnai models:

  • Infinity 26i or 32e / HD50i or HD70e:
    • Deluxe Option 1: MC-70-2A (Kitchen), BC-70-2A (Bathroom 1), BC-70-2A (Bathroom 2), MC-91-1A (Bathroom 3).
    • Deluxe Option 2: MC-70-2A (Kitchen), BC-70-2A (Bathroom 1), MC-91-1A (Bathroom 2), MC-91-1A (Bathroom 3).

Universal Temperature Controller (MC-91-1A):

This controller is an optional feature that provides water temperature control. Rinnai Infinity and HD water heaters can operate with 1, 2, 3, 4, or no temperature controllers.

  • Digital Monitor: Displays the selected temperature and flashes error messages in case of a fault.
  • Operation Indicator: Lights up when a hot water tap is open.
  • Transfer Button: Used to transfer priority between controllers. The controller with priority controls the hot water delivery temperature.
  • Temperature Control Buttons: Used to select the desired water temperature.
  • ON Indicator: Shows if the controller is in control of water delivery temperature.
  • ON/OFF Button: Switches the temperature controllers on and off.

Operation with Universal Temperature Controllers:

  • Using 1 Universal Controller:

    1. Press the ON/OFF button. The ON indicator will glow, indicating the unit is ready to supply hot water.
    2. Adjust temperature by pressing the HOTTER or COOLER buttons until the desired temperature is shown.
    3. Turn on any hot water tap. The unit will activate, and the IN USE indicator will glow. Adjust temperature if needed.
    • Caution: Always check water temperature before use, especially for children.
    • Note: If a temperature of 43°C or higher is selected, then decreased below 43°C, and then raised again, the maximum available temperature will be 43°C. Temperature priority cannot be transferred between controllers in this scenario.
  • Using 2 or More Universal Controllers:

    • Switching System ON: Press the ON/OFF button on any controller. The ON indicator will light up. Confirm the transfer button is lit.
    • Adjusting Temperature: Select desired temperature using 'Hot water temp.' buttons. The selected temperature will be displayed on all controllers.
    • Operating Hot Water: Open any hot water tap. The unit will activate, and the 'in use' indicator will light up.
    • Note: Temperatures higher than 50°C should be selected on controllers installed in bathrooms, ensuites, or toilets to reduce the risk of burns. Consult your installer if this is not the case.

Programming Temperature Controls (for temperatures higher than 50°C):

  • Four Temperature Controllers Fitted:

    1. For the Primary controller only, press and hold 'Transfer' and 'On/Off' buttons simultaneously for approximately 5 seconds until a "beep" is heard.
    2. Check that all four controllers display a temperature when switched on. If any controller displays two dashes, repeat Step 1.
  • Three or Less Controllers Fitted:

    1. For the Primary controller only, press and hold 'Transfer' and 'On/Off' buttons simultaneously for approximately 5 seconds until a "beep" is heard.
    2. When the Primary controller is switched on, it should be possible to select temperatures higher than 50°C. If not, repeat Step 1.
    • Note: If the primary controller is replaced, repeat Step 1 for the new controller.

Turning OFF Hot Water System (Universal Controllers):

Simply press the ON/OFF button on any controller. This will shut down the Infinity unit and turn off the digital displays. If hot water taps are opened when the unit is OFF, cold water will flow.

Additional Safety Features (Universal Controllers):

  • Temperature selection cannot be transferred while the hot water tap is open.
  • If a temperature of 43°C or higher is selected, then decreased below 43°C, and then raised again, the maximum available temperature will be 43°C.
  • Other controllers cannot change the delivery temperature of the water heater.
  • Note: The outgoing hot water temperature is constantly monitored. If it rises more than 3°C above the selected temperature (or pre-set limit without controllers), the burner will automatically shut off and reignite once the temperature falls back to the selected level.

Deluxe Temperature Controllers:

Deluxe Kitchen Temperature Controller (MC-70-2A):

  • Digital Monitor: Displays hot water temperature, mode of operation, and clock.
  • Transfer Button / Light (Green): Transfers 'priority' between controllers. The controller with priority has command of water delivery temperature, and its transfer button light will be illuminated.
  • Hours / Mins Buttons: Used to select hours and minutes for the clock.
  • Clock Button: Selects the clock function.
  • Sound Volume Button: Changes the voice volume.
  • ON/OFF Button: Switches temperature controllers on and off.
  • Temperature Control Buttons: Selects water temperature. UP/DOWN buttons are also located on the lid.
  • Speaker: Provides audio feedback.
  • Caution: Be careful not to get water in the speaker.

Deluxe Kitchen Temperature Controller Monitor:

  • Hot Water Combustion Indicator (Red): Shows when hot water is used.
  • Shower Saver / Bath Fill Indicator (Green): Indicates Shower Saver / Bath Fill function is operating.
  • Hot Water Temp. Indicator: Indicates selected hot water temperature.
  • Clock: Displays the time.
  • Error Indicator: Flashes an error code if there is a fault.
  • Note: Each button press sounds a 'beep'. The 'beep' and 'bath fill complete' buzzer can be muted by pressing the Temperature Controller Up and Down buttons simultaneously for more than 3 seconds. Repeat to return to original settings.

Deluxe Bathroom Temperature Controller (BC-70-2A):

  • Transfer Button / Light (Green): Same function as Kitchen Controller.
  • Water Volume Buttons: Selects Shower Saver / Bath Fill volumes.
  • Bath / Shower Temp. Button: Selects Shower Saver / Bath Fill temperature.
  • Digital Monitor: Displays hot water temperature, Shower Saver / Bath Fill temperature, Shower Saver / Bath Fill volume, and mode of operation.
  • Shower Saver / Bath Fill Button (Orange): Selects Shower Saver / Bath Fill function.
  • Temperature Control Buttons: Selects water temperature.
  • Sound Volume Button: Changes voice volume.
  • Speaker: Provides audio feedback.
  • ON/OFF Button: Switches temperature controllers on and off.
  • Caution: Be careful not to get water in the speaker.

Deluxe Bathroom Temperature Controller Monitor:

  • Hot Water Combustion Indicator (Red): Shows when hot water is used.
  • Shower / Bath Combustion Indicator (Red): Shows when Shower Saver / Bath Fill is selected and the shower is running or bath is filling.
  • Water Level Indicator: Indicates selected Shower Saver / Bath Fill volume.
  • Shower Saver / Bath Fill Temp. Indicator: Indicates selected Shower Saver / Bath Fill temperature.
  • Water Volume Indicator: Indicates selected water volume (reverts to Shower Saver / Bath Fill temperature selected).
  • Hot Water Temp. Indicator: Indicates selected hot water temperature.
  • Clock: Displays the time.
  • Error Indicator: Flashes an error code if there is a fault.
  • Remaining Water Volume Indicator: Shows how much water still needs to flow for the selected Shower Saver / Bath Fill volume (decreases during operation).
  • Note: Same mute function as Kitchen Controller.

Using 1 Deluxe Controller:

  • Switching System ON: Press ON/OFF button. Monitor will light up.
  • Setting the Clock:
    1. Press 'Clock' button. Digital monitor flashes AM 12:00.
    2. Set time using 'Hour' and 'Min.' buttons. Numbers change continuously when held, intermittently when pressed.
    3. Press 'Clock' button again to activate.
    • Note: Clock is always displayed. May need reset after power failure.
  • Setting Sound Volume: 'Sound Vol.' button behind flip panel is not used with one Kitchen Controller.
  • Using Hot Water:
    1. Ensure system is ON. Press ON/OFF if not. 'Transfer' button will light up.
    2. Select desired temperature using 'Hot water temp.' buttons.
    3. Open hot water tap. Unit activates, red combustion symbol lights up.
    • Caution: Check water temperature before use.
    • Note: Consumer safeguards regarding 43°C temperature limit and priority transfer apply.

Using 2 Deluxe Controllers (MC-70-2A Kitchen, BC-70-2A Bathroom):

  • Switching System ON: Press ON/OFF on either controller. Monitors will light up.
  • Setting the Clock: Set on Kitchen Controller (MC-70-2A) as described for 1 Deluxe Controller.
    • Note: Kitchen Controller time is automatically displayed on Bathroom Controller(s) when ON.
  • Setting Sound Volume: As described for 1 Deluxe Controller.
  • Using Hot Water: As described for 1 Deluxe Controller.

Operation with Deluxe Temperature Controllers (Continued):

Setting the Sound Volume (for 2 Deluxe Controllers):

The sound volume for all Temperature Controllers can be set individually, even when switched off. Press the 'Sound Vol.' button behind the flip panel. The volume changes in sequence: Medium (initial), High, Off, Low.

Using Hot Water (for 2 Deluxe Controllers):

Hot water delivery temperature can be controlled from either the Kitchen Controller (MC-70-2A) or the Bathroom Controller (BC-70-2A).

  • Deluxe Kitchen Controller:

    1. Ensure system is ON, monitors lit, 'Transfer' button lit. If not, press 'Transfer'.
    2. Select desired temperature using 'Hot water temp.' buttons. Displayed on both controllers.
    3. Open hot water tap. Unit activates, red combustion symbol lights up on both monitors.
    • Caution: Check water temperature before use.
    • Note: Consumer safeguards regarding 43°C temperature limit and priority transfer apply.
  • Deluxe Bathroom Controller:

    1. Ensure system is ON, monitors lit, 'Transfer' button lit. If not, press 'Transfer'.
    2. Select desired temperature using 'Hot water temp.' buttons. Displayed on all controllers.
    3. Open hot water tap. Unit activates, red combustion symbol lights up on both monitors.
    • Caution: Check water temperature before use.
    • Note: Consumer safeguards regarding 43°C temperature limit and priority transfer apply.

Shower Saver / Bath Fill Function (Deluxe Bathroom Controller BC-70-2A):

This function allows a shower to run for a desired period or a bath to be filled to a desired level and temperature automatically.

  • Step 1: Programming Bath Volume and Temperature:

    • When first turned on, default shower/bath fill temperature is 40°C, and volume is 100 litres (first level marker). Volume can be changed up to 400 litres.
    • (a) Ensure system is ON, monitors lit, 'Transfer' button lit.
    • (b) Select desired temperature using 'Shower / Bath temp.' buttons. Displayed on bottom of bathroom controller monitor.
    • (c) Select desired shower / bath volume using 'Water Vol.' buttons. Displayed numerically and graphically by a long bar against level markers. Recommended to start with 30 litres for first bath fill.
      • Volume (L) to Position of long bar: 400 (12), 350 (12), 300 (11), 280 (10), 260 (9), 240 (8), 220 (7), 200 (6), 180 (5), 160 (4), 140 (3), 120 (2), 100 (1), 60 (1), 30 (1).
      • Note: Bath level markers are not a true representation of your bath. Average bath size is 160 litres. Be careful not to overfill.
    • (d) After approx. 5 seconds, numeric volume reverts to shower saver / bath fill temperature. Long bar remains.
  • Step 2: Activate Automatic Shower Saver / Bath Fill Function:

    • Caution: When using for the first few times, be present during filling.
    • (a) Ensure system is ON, monitors lit, 'Transfer' button lit.
    • (b) Press 'Shower Saver / Bath fill' button. Button lights up, buzzer sounds. 'Bath' indicator on Kitchen Controller lights up. Voice says "The hot water system is ready. Open the hot water tap."
    • (c) Open hot water tap for shower or bath. Combustion indicator lights up on all controllers, shower runs or bath fills.
      • Caution: Check water temperature before use.
      • Note: During Shower Saver / Bath fill, Bathroom Controller displays remaining volume.
    • If you wish to stop water flow, press 'Shower Saver / Bath fill' button. Button flashes, voice says "Hot water is not available; Turn off all hot water taps and push the 'Bath fill' button".
    • (d) When finished (programmed volume & temperature): Flow stops, 'Shower Saver / Bath fill' button on Bathroom Controller(s) and 'Bath' indicator on Kitchen Controller flash, buzzer sounds, voice says "Bath fill is complete. Turn off the bath hot water tap and push the Bath fill' button."
    • (e) Important: When filling a bath, close the hot water tap when full to prevent overfilling.
    • (f) Press 'Shower Saver / Bath fill' button. This informs the unit that the function is complete and the tap is shut. Hot water will not flow until this button is pressed. The light on the Bathroom Controller and the 'Bath' indicator on the Kitchen Controller will go out.
    • Caution: Never leave young children unattended in the bath. Always close the hot water tap after filling.

Using 2 Deluxe Controllers and 1 Universal Controller (MC-70-2A Kitchen, BC-70-2A Bathroom, MC-91-1A Bathroom):

  • Switching System On: As described previously.
  • Setting the Clock: See page 13.
  • Setting the Sound Volume: See page 16.
  • Using Hot Water: Temperature can be controlled from any controller. See pages 16-17.
  • Shower Saver / Bath Fill Function: Only BC-70-2A controllers can use this. With two or more Bathroom Controllers, only one bath can be filled at a time. See pages 17-19.
    • Caution: Check water temperature before use.
    • Note: Consumer safeguards regarding 43°C temperature limit and priority transfer apply.

Using 3 Deluxe Controllers (MC-70-2A Kitchen, two BC-70-2A Bathrooms):

  • Switching System On: As described previously.

Maintenance Monitor / Error History:

This feature is available with deluxe controllers (MC70 or BC70) and enables service personnel to locate maintenance history and faulty components while the appliance is in operation. Use only one controller when displaying this information.

  • To Display Maintenance Information:

    1. With the controller in the "OFF" position, press the Water Temperature "DOWN" (Cooler) button while holding the "ON/OFF" button.
    2. Press the "ON/OFF" button a second time to set the controller in "ON" mode.
    3. The maintenance number will be shown in the Water Temperature display, and data will be shown in the Clock display.
    4. Select the required maintenance number using the Water Temperature "UP" and "DOWN" buttons.
    • Note: Infinity 26i and HD50i use Maintenance Numbers 1-12.
  • Display Monitor Contents:

    • No. 01: Water flow sensor recognition flow: Units: 0.1L/min, Data Range: 0-400 (Example: 123 = 12.3L/min).
    • No. 02: Hot water Outlet thermistor temperature: Units: °C, Data Range: 0-999 (Example: 20 = 20°C).
    • No. 03: Hot water combustion time: Units: 100 hours, Data Range: 000-999 (Example: 6 = 600 hours).
    • No. 04: Hot water operation frequency: Units: 100, Data Range: 0-999 (Example: 6 = 600 Operations).
    • No. 05: Hot water fan frequency: Units: Hz pulses/sec, Data Range: 0-999 (*Note 1).
      • Note 1 Fan Frequency rpm Conversion: (rpm) = (Hz) x15.
    • No. 06: Remote control connection: Units: none, Data Range: 0 or 1 (*Note 2).
      • Note 2 Remote Control Connections:
  • Controls connected: No - Display: "0"

  • Controls connected: Yes - Display: "1"

  • Bathroom Remote: "0"

  • Additional remote: "1"

  • Servo Position Display: Closed - "2" * No. 08: Inlet water temperature (PCB recognition value): Units: °C, Data Range: 0-999 (Example: 25 = 25°C). * No. 09: Hot water fan current flow value: Units: 10 mA, Data Range: 0-999 (Example: 6 x 10 = 60 mA). * No. 10: Bath fill amount (this counts the litres during bath fill operation): Units: Litres, Data Range: 0-999. * No. 11: Heat exchanger exit thermistor temperature: Units: °C, Data Range: 0-999 (Example: 55 = 55°C). * No. 12: Bypass servo present recognition positioning: Units: Degrees, Data Range: 0-320 (0 = Closed, 160 = Half open, 320 = Open).

  • To Return to Normal Operation (Maintenance Monitor): Press the ON/OFF button again while holding down the Water Temperature "DOWN" (Cooler) button.

  • Error History (Displays the last 10 faults in sequence):

    1. Turn off the ON/OFF button (can be done during operation).
    2. Press the ON/OFF button while holding the Water Temperature "UP" (Hotter) button.
    • The sequence will be shown in the Water Temperature display.
    • Error Code will be shown in the Clock display (refer to service manual for codes).
    • If fewer than 9 errors, "FFF" or " - -" will be displayed.
  • To Return to Normal Operation (Error History): Press the ON/OFF button again while holding the Water Temperature "UP" (Hotter) button. This feature will automatically shut down after 3 minutes.
