This installation and short user’s guide is intended for experienced trained specialists and contains
only the most important information concerning the assembly, installation and function of the
CMC III Processing Unit / CMC III Processing Unit Compact (subsequently called CMC III PU).

2 Safety instructions
– Assembly and installation of the device may only be performed by experienced trained special-
ists.
– A mains power connection or mains power wiring as part of the CMC III PU wiring may only be
performed by an experienced electrician.
– The CMC III PU housing must not be opened.
– The CMC III PU may not come in contact with water, aggressive or inflammable gases and va-
pours.
– The CMC III PU may only be operated within the specified environmental conditions (see
section 3.4).
3 Product description
3.1 Functional description
The CMC III PU is the central product of the Rittal enclosure monitoring and control system for the
electronic monitoring of enclosures and server racks. It provides an Ethernet LAN interface in con-
junction with a web site for user communication. In addition to the integrated sensors, the CAN bus
interface allows a wide range of sensors, actuators and systems for access monitoring to be con-
nected. All sensors initialise themselves automatically after connection to the CAN bus system.
3.2 Proper use
The CMC III PU is used only as an enclosure monitoring system and for the administration of the
various enclosure parameters. Any other use is not permitted.
Rittal must be contacted before using a sensor connected outside of an enclosure.
