Overview

This document is an instruction manual for the Rohnson Coffee Maker, model R-987.

Function Description

The Rohnson R-987 is a coffee maker designed for household and similar applications, capable of making espresso, cappuccino, frothed milk, and hot beverages like drinking chocolate, water, or tea using its steam wand. It features a pump system for brewing coffee and a frothing device for milk. The appliance is equipped with a power indicator, coffee indicator, coffee switch, power switch, steam switch, and a steam control knob.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual does not explicitly list technical specifications such as voltage, wattage, or pump pressure. However, it implies certain operational characteristics:

  • Water Tank Capacity: The water tank has a "MAX" mark, indicating a maximum fill level.
  • Milk Volume for Cappuccino: Approximately 100 ml of milk is recommended per cappuccino, with the expectation that milk volume will double when frothed.
  • Descaling Solution Ratio: For cleaning mineral deposits, a water-to-descaler ratio of 4:1 is specified, or 100 parts water to 3 parts citric acid.
  • Automatic Power Off: The unit automatically powers off if there is no operation within 25 minutes.

Usage Features

The Rohnson R-987 offers several features for ease of use and quality coffee making:

General Usage:

  • Detachable Water Tank: The appliance is supplied with a detachable tank for easy cleaning and filling.
  • Removable Shelf: A removable shelf is provided for placing a jug or coffee cup.
  • Ground Coffee Preparation: The manual specifies using a measuring spoon and tamper to press ground coffee powder tightly into the steel mesh.
  • Steam Control Knob: A steam control knob allows for manual control of steam release for frothing milk or heating beverages. It should always be in the "OFF" position when not in use.
  • Indicators: Red indicators illuminate to show power status, pre-heating completion, and steam readiness.

Before First Use:

  • Rinsing Procedure: Before initial use, the coffee maker should be rinsed with warm water to ensure optimal coffee taste. This involves filling the water tank, placing an empty steel mesh in the metal funnel, and running water through the system by pressing the power and coffee switches.
  • Air Release: During the first pumping of water, noise may occur as the appliance releases air, which is normal and should subside after about 20 seconds.

Pre-heating:

  • Recommended Pre-heating: To make a good hot Espresso, pre-heating the appliance, including the funnel, filter, and cup, is recommended to prevent the coffee flavor from being influenced by cold parts.
  • Pre-heating Steps: This involves filling the water tank, inserting the metal funnel with the steel mesh (no coffee), placing an espresso cup on the shelf, connecting to power, pressing the power switch, and then pressing the coffee switch to pump water. The pre-heating is complete when the lamp in the coffee switch illuminates.

Making Espresso:

  • Coffee Preparation: After pre-heating, ground coffee is added to the steel mesh, tamped, and the metal funnel is inserted and locked into place.
  • Brewing Process: Once the coffee switch lamp is illuminated, pressing the coffee switch will start the brewing process. The lamp cycling on and off indicates the water temperature is maintained.
  • Manual Operation: The user needs to manually press the power switch to stop brewing when the desired coffee volume or color is achieved. The manual warns against leaving the coffee maker unattended during this process.
  • Post-Brewing: After making coffee, the metal funnel is removed by turning clockwise, and coffee residue is discarded.

Making Cappuccino/Frothed Milk:

  • Espresso First: Espresso should be prepared first with the steam control knob in the "o" position.
  • Milk Frothing: Fill a jug with about 100 ml of cold whole milk. Press the steam switch selector and wait for its indicator to illuminate. Slowly turn the steam control knob anti-clockwise to release steam. Insert the frothing device into the milk and move the vessel up and down to froth.
  • Safety during Frothing: The manual warns against rapidly turning the steam control button to avoid rapid steam accumulation and potential explosion risk.
  • Combining: Once milk is frothed, turn the steam control knob to "o" position, pour frothed milk into the espresso, and sweeten to taste, optionally adding cocoa powder.
  • Cool-down Recommendation: After making cappuccino, it's recommended to allow the maker to cool down for at least 5 minutes before making coffee again to prevent a burnt odor.

Making Steam:

  • Hot Beverages: The steam wand can be used to make hot beverages.
  • Process: Fill the water tank, connect to power, press the power switch, remove the frothing device from the steam wand, dip the steam wand into the liquid to be heated, and slowly turn the steam control knob anti-clockwise to start making steam. Turn the knob to "o" position when the desired temperature is reached.

Maintenance Features

The manual provides detailed instructions for cleaning and maintenance to ensure the longevity and performance of the coffee maker.

General Cleaning:

  • Cool Down: Always cut off power and allow the coffee maker to cool down completely before cleaning.
  • Housing Cleaning: Clean the housing with a moisture-proof sponge.
  • Removable Parts: Regularly clean and dry the water tank, drip tray, and removable shelf.
  • Avoid Immersion: Do not immerse the housing in water.
  • Avoid Solvents: Do not clean with alcohol or solvent cleansers.
  • Metal Funnel: Detach the metal funnel by turning it clockwise, remove coffee residue, clean with cleanser, and rinse thoroughly with clear water.
  • Attachments: Clean all attachments in water and dry thoroughly.

Cleaning Mineral Deposits (Descaling):

  • Frequency: Mineral deposits should be cleaned every 2-3 months to maintain efficiency and coffee flavor.
  • Descaling Solution: Use a household descaler (4 parts water to 1 part descaler) or citric acid (100 parts water to 3 parts citric acid).
  • Descaling Process:
    1. Fill the tank with the descaling solution to the MAX level.
    2. Place the metal funnel (without coffee powder) and a jug in place.
    3. Press the power switch, then the pump control switch (coffee/steam selector) to run water through until it flows out, then close the pump.
    4. Wait for the heating to finish (lamp in pump control switch illuminates).
    5. Press the pump control switch to brew two cups of coffee (approx. 2 oz), then close the pump and wait 5 seconds.
    6. Press the coffee/steam selector, wait for its indicator to illuminate, then make steam for 2 minutes by turning the steam control knob. Turn the knob to "o" to stop steam.
    7. Immediately press the power switch to stop the unit and allow the descalers to deposit for at least 15 minutes.
    8. Restart the unit and repeat steps 4-6 at least 3 times.
    9. Press the coffee/steam selector, then the pump control switch to brew until no descaler is left.
    10. Brew coffee (without coffee powder) with tap water at MAX level, repeating steps 4-6 three times (without the 15-minute wait in step 6), then brew until no water is left.
    11. Repeat step 9 at least 3 times to ensure the piping is clean.

Troubleshooting: The manual includes a troubleshooting section with common symptoms, their causes, and recommended corrections, such as cleaning the drip tray, contacting service for malfunctions, using fresh coffee powder, and ensuring the power outlet is working. It also advises against self-repair and recommends contacting a certified service center for unresolved issues.

Disposal: The product is marked with a crossed-out wheeled dustbin, indicating that it should not be disposed of as urban waste. It must be taken to a special local authority differentiated waste collection center or a dealer providing such a service, in accordance with EC Directive 2002/96/EC. This ensures proper disposal, avoids negative environmental and health consequences, and allows for material recovery.
