Intended Use: Intended Use: The O-Pen® is designed to ensure safer drinking water from taps or
other clear water sources such as rainwater or clear lakes or streams. It does this by infusing the
water with high levels of ozone. Ozone is the most powerful oxidizer available that can be safely
used in water treatment.* Water that is visibly clouded with dirt, silt or algae should be allowed to
settle and/or be filtered. The O-Pen® will render water containing tannins safe to drink. However,
the tannins (“tea” coloring) may remain
Warranty reminder: Please register your product to activate warranties. Go to
www.rovingblue.com/warranty, or call 855-492-8375 with the following information: name, address,
date of purchase, and serial number of the pen. The serial number is engraved on the underside of
the pen clip.
Caution: The O-Pen® was designed for use with clear tap water, clear lake or stream water, or
collected rainwater of unknown safety. Water with debris should be filtered through a cloth or coffee
filter before treatment.
Place water in a treatment container, preferably clear plastic or glass, and examine the water
carefully. Cloudiness in the water could indicate high bacteria levels. While ozone is highly effective
at killing bacteria, the OPen® may not generate enough ozone to kill very high levels of bacteria. If
in doubt, operate the pen repeatedly until there is a distinct smell of ozone. It is not possible to
“over-ozonate” water. However, you can under-dose it. If you cannot smell ozone, the ozone
probably is being used up by contaminants in the water. You may need to operate OPen® many
times until you smell the ozone.
Be Aware: Infectious microbes can be encountered in many ways. Infectious diseases can be
spread through:
Ÿ Foods washed in unsafe water
Ÿ Contact with infected people, animals or objects
Ÿ Unintentional water consumption, such as when brushing teeth, showering or swimming
Opportunities for infection are abundant and virtually everywhere. To avoid microbial infection, one
must take all necessary precautions. Use of a Roving Blue® O-Pen® is an important precaution,
but not the only precaution. The Blue® O-Pen® device does not guarantee that the user will avoid
illness.
Ongoing Care, Cleaning and Storage: When not in use, the O-Pen® should be charged and kept
in its box. If you use the O-Pen® only once or twice a year, charge it at 6-month intervals. Failure
to do so will void your warranty! O-Pen® should not be exposed to temperatures above
140°F/60°C or below -4°F/-20°C. Store O-Pen® in its box with the black dust cover in place. To
clean the unit, wash it with a soft cloth and mild soap solution. Rinse, shake dry, and lay out to dry
completely. Replace cap and store.
Periodic Maintenance: Water often contains minerals such as calcium carbonate. Like the
residue in a coffee maker, minerals will slowly accumulate on the electrodes. This will cause the
electrolysis process to slow down. When the production of the ozone appears weak, clean the
electrodes as follows:
Ÿ Prepare a solution of tap water and regular kitchen vinegar at a ratio of 5 parts water to 1 part
vinegar. Alternative: use the cleaner “CLR”, follow the dilution instructions for coffee makers
Ÿ Dip the ozone electrode into this solution for 10 minutes. Do NOT apply power.
Ÿ Stir a few times and remove from solution. Rinse the tip in cool tap water. After cleaning the
electrodes, normal production will resume. Note: Heavy deposits may require several
treatments.
If you follow these instructions, your O-Pen® will provide years of service. Enjoy your new O-Pen,
and welcome to the world of safer water!

Overview

The Roving Blue® O-Pen® is a portable device designed to purify drinking water using dissolved ozone as a sanitation agent. It is intended for use with clear tap water, clear lake or stream water, or collected rainwater of unknown safety. Water with debris should be filtered through a cloth or coffee filter before treatment. The device is not waterproof at the USB port end and should not be submerged beyond the tip.

Function Description:

The O-Pen® generates ozone, a powerful oxidizer, to disinfect water. Ozone is highly effective at killing bacteria and other microbes, achieving over 99.9% pathogen kill rates. It can also reduce iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, and improve taste and odor. Additionally, ozone helps reduce the formation of disinfection by-products like trihalomethanes (THMs) and halo acetic acids (HAAs). The device infuses water with high levels of ozone, making it safe to drink. It is not possible to "over-ozonate" water. If the water is still suspect after initial treatment, additional doses can be applied. The presence of an ozone smell indicates that the water has reached its saturation point and has a high level of ozone.

Important Technical Specifications:

The O-Pen® is equipped with lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. Charging time ranges from 5 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the battery's charge state. An LED light indicates the charge status: Red (charging/needs charging), Yellow (partially charged), Green (fully charged). The device operates at 5V via a USB power supply. Each "dose" of ozone generation lasts 40 seconds and is sufficient for 8 oz of water (two doses for 16 oz). After the ozone cycle, a 3-minute waiting period is indicated by a flashing yellow LED light, allowing the ozone to disinfect the water. A green LED light then indicates the water is safe to use. The device should not be exposed to temperatures above 140°F/60°C or below -4°F/-20°C.

Usage Features:

  1. Initial Setup: Before first use, fully charge the O-Pen®. Open the black dust cap (A), plug the mini USB charger cord (B) into the port socket (C), and insert the USB plug (D) into a 5V USB power supply. The LED light (E) will illuminate, indicating charge status. Once fully charged, remove the cord and replace the cap.
  2. Water Preparation: For water purification systems like RO or reverse osmosis, add a pinch of salt to the water to increase conductivity. Stir to dissolve. Surface waters or unfiltered tap water typically contain enough substances for ozone to act, so no salt is needed.
  3. Operation: Ensure the unit is fully charged. Remove the pen cap (F). Submerge the tip (G) in a vessel containing up to 16 oz (475 L) of clear water, avoiding submerging the USB port end. Press and hold the ON/OFF button (H) for 3 seconds until the LED light comes on, indicating battery charge status.
  4. Ozone Cycle: Quickly push the ON/OFF button once to begin the 40-second ozone cycle, indicated by a blue LED light. Constantly stir the pen in the water during this cycle. One dose is for 8 oz of water; two doses for 16 oz.
  5. Disinfection Time: After the ozone cycle, wait 3 minutes while the pen flashes a yellow LED light. This allows the ozone to disinfect the water. After 3 minutes, the light will turn green, indicating the water is safe to use.
  6. Shut Down: Remove the O-Pen® from the water, shake off excess water, and optionally lay it out to dry completely. Replace the cap and store it in its box.

Maintenance Features:

  1. Ongoing Care and Storage: When not in use, the O-Pen® should be charged and kept in its box. If used infrequently (once or twice a year), charge it every 6 months to prevent warranty voidance. Store with the black dust cover in place.
  2. Cleaning: Wash the unit with a soft cloth and mild soap solution. Rinse, shake dry, and lay out to dry completely before replacing the cap and storing.
  3. Electrode Cleaning (Periodic Maintenance): Minerals can accumulate on the electrodes, reducing ozone production. To clean:
    • Prepare a solution of 5 parts tap water to 1 part kitchen vinegar, or use "CLR" cleaner diluted for coffee makers.
    • Dip the ozone electrode into this solution for 10 minutes (do NOT apply power).
    • Stir a few times, then remove from the solution.
    • Rinse the tip in cool tap water.
    • Normal ozone production should resume. Heavy deposits may require several treatments.
  4. Initial Priming: Before regular use, operate the pen a minimum of 4 times. This helps you become familiar with the smell of ozone and ensures the electrodes are clean and the ozone generator is fully primed. For the first use, after the initial 40-second cycle, the yellow LED will flash for 3 minutes. You can press the on/off button again and run for another 40 seconds, repeating one more time. Dispose of this water.
