Overview

The RS MIZAR™ Diamond Detective, manufactured by DYMOND Inc., is a portable device designed to distinguish genuine diamonds from simulants. This device utilizes thermal conductivity to identify diamonds, providing a quick and reliable method for verification.

Function Description

The Diamond Detective operates by measuring the thermal conductivity of a stone. Diamonds are excellent thermal conductors, while most simulants are not. When the probe tip is applied to a stone, the device assesses its thermal properties. If the stone is a genuine diamond, the green diamond lamp will flash, and a discontinuous beeping sound (beep-beep-beep) will be heard. For diamond simulants such as Cubic Zirconium's, "paste," and strass, no illumination of the green diamond lamp will be observed. The device also features a "METAL ALERT" function, which sounds a continuous "beep" if the probe tip is in contact with the user's hand or a metal setting, indicating an improper test condition. An automatic alarm sounds after 150 seconds of inactivity to conserve battery life. Pressing the "ON" button resets this timer.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model: Diamond Detective
  • Power Source: 9 Volt Battery (NEDA Size 1604 (006P))
  • Net Weight: 105 Grams (3.7 Oz.)
  • Operating Temperature: The ambient temperature for testing should be between 65°F and 95°F.

Usage Features

The Diamond Detective is designed for user-friendly operation with several key features:

  • Parts Identification: The device includes a probe (1), diamond indicator (2), ready lamp (3), wait/low battery lamp (4), battery compartment (5), conductive panel (6), small/large stone switch (7), "ON" button (8), and "OFF" button (9).
  • Operational Checkout:
    1. Rotate the thumbwheel (7) to the right for large stones.
    2. Press the "ON" button (8).
    3. The Wait Lamp (4) will illuminate.
    4. All other display lamps remain extinguished during the wait period (typically less than nine seconds at room temperature). A single beep sounds after the wait period.
    5. If the waiting time exceeds twenty seconds or the Wait Lamp fails to extinguish, the battery needs replacement.
    6. The device is ready when the Wait Lamp extinguishes and the Ready Lamp is lit.
    7. Always press the "OFF" button (9) after testing to prolong battery life.
  • Stone Size Selection: A switch (7) allows the user to select between "LARGE" (normal) stone position for stones 0.08 Carat or larger, and "SMALL" stone position for stones 0.08 Carat or smaller.
  • Proper Testing Technique:
    1. Hold the diamond tester so fingers are in contact with the conductive panel (6).
    2. Hold the stone to be tested by its setting with the other hand.
    3. Guide the probe tip to the center of a facet on the stone.
    4. Apply firm and square pressure with the probe tip to the stone, avoiding excessive force that could bend or break the tip.
    5. For maximum accuracy, minimize handling of the stone prior to testing to avoid heating it with hands. Allow the item to be untouched for about fifteen seconds if it contains many stones.
    6. Perform tests in still air, avoiding fans, drafts, or air movement from air conditioning/heating sources. Avoid breathing directly on the probe tip.
  • Helpful Hints:
    • If the red Low Battery lamp remains on and the Ready Lamp doesn't light within twenty seconds, replace the battery.
    • Stones that have been worn and are above room temperature can be tested immediately using the SMALL STONE setting. Otherwise, allow the stone to return to room temperature.
    • When testing small stones, use the SMALL STONE setting and ensure good contact on the first attempt. If not, allow the stone to return to room temperature before retesting.
  • Moissanite Testing: Some Moissanite stones may test as diamonds. Further testing, such as checking for Double Refraction and shining a UV light source on the stone, is recommended in such cases.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of the Diamond Detective:

  • Probe Protection: Always place the protective cover over the probe immediately after use to prevent damage. Probe tip damage is not covered under warranty.
  • Cleaning:
    • The probe tip should be cleaned frequently by gently wiping it across a clean sheet of paper (bonded paper or business card; avoid copier and fax paper).
    • Prior to testing, it is recommended to clean the surface of each stone with a damp, soft, clean fabric, followed by drying with a dry, soft, clean fabric.
    • During testing, the user's hands should be clean and dry. Do not wear gloves. One of the user's "bare" fingers must be touching the rear metal plate.
  • Battery Replacement: The only other required maintenance is battery replacement when indicated by the Wait/Low Battery Lamp (4) or if the device fails to complete its operational checkout within twenty seconds.

Warranty Information
