Do you have a question about the RSE Southern Cross 52 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Southern Cross 52 is an intelligent automatic satellite TV reception system designed for fixed installation on motorhomes and caravans, allowing for mobile entertainment at its best. It automatically aims a parabolic antenna at geostationary television satellites, specifically the Optus D1 satellite for direct transmission to New Zealand. The system operates on a standard vehicle electric system with a rated voltage of 12 volts.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Southern Cross 52 is to provide automatic satellite TV reception in mobile environments. Once powered on and initiated, the dish will open, search for the pre-set satellite (Optus D1 for NZ), and then fine-tune itself to achieve maximum signal gain. The system is designed to lock onto the satellite and maintain a stable signal for TV viewing. It also includes an "Auto Up" function, allowing the antenna to open automatically when the TV or satellite decoder remote "ON" button is pressed. A safety feature ensures the dish retracts if the vehicle's ignition is switched on or the stop light circuit is activated (for caravans), preventing damage during movement.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Supply: 12V DC (standard vehicle electric system).
  • Maximum Vehicle Speed: Designed for use at speeds no more than 100 Km/h.
  • Satellite Target: Optus D1 (Azimuth 318° for NZ).
  • LNB Setting: 10750.
  • Primary Search Transponder Frequency: 12483 Freeview.
  • Symbol Rate: 22500.
  • Polarization: Horizontal.
  • Operating Voltage: Optimum 12.00V DC – 14.8V DC; Minimum threshold 10.5V DC.
  • Standby Current Draw: 200 milliamps.
  • Operating Current Draw (stationary, locked onto satellite): 350 milliamps.
  • Overall Dimensions (Closed):
    • Base length: 420 mm
    • Width: 300 mm
    • Overall length (including dish): 825 mm
    • Overall width (including dish): 540 mm
    • Overall height (closed): 165 mm
  • Overall Dimensions (Open):
    • Overall height (open): 730 mm
  • Weight: 11.3 Kg.
  • Required Clearance: A radius of 260 mm from the center of the dish rotation pivot to a height of 500 mm from the roof.
  • Cable Length (Data Box to Display): 5 meters.

Usage Features:

  • Automatic Satellite Acquisition: The system automatically searches for and locks onto the pre-set satellite. Acquisition time typically ranges from 45 to 55 seconds, depending on location and atmospheric conditions.
  • Controller Display: A display panel shows the system status (e.g., "OPENING," "SEARCHING," "TRACKING," "SIGNAL LOCKED") and signal strength. An LED next to the ON/OFF button indicates status (red during functions, green when locked).
  • ON/OFF Button: Initiates system operation (opens dish, starts search) and retracts the dish.
  • "Tick" Button:
    • Stops the dish immediately if rotating (for cleaning or service). Pressing it again restarts the search process.
    • If the dish is already locked, pressing it once brings on the display, and pressing it twice in quick succession initiates an automatic fine-tune.
  • Auto Up Function: Can be programmed to automatically open the antenna when the TV or satellite decoder is turned on.
  • Auto Shut Down Circuit: Connects to a switched ignition source, alternator D+ connection, or stop light circuit (for caravans) to automatically retract the dish when the vehicle is in motion.
  • Master ON/OFF Reset Switch: Located on the Data Box, this switch allows for resetting the dish software in case of low battery voltage or electrical "events."
  • Signal Strength Indicator: The display shows signal strength, typically between 48-52 when locked.

Maintenance Features:

  • No Regular Maintenance: Other than cleaning, no regular maintenance is required.
  • Sealed Housings: All housings and enclosures must not be opened by the user.
  • Professional Service: Any maintenance work or alteration of settings should only be carried out by a qualified professional or technician.
  • Warranty Service: The Southern Cross 52 comes with a 24-month warranty. After this period, the product can be returned to RSE (NZ) Ltd for a service at a cost, which then carries a further 12-month warranty.
  • Installation Guidelines: Installation must be performed by a qualified technician, adhering to automotive industry guidelines. The equipment must be installed on sufficiently strong and stable vehicle roofs. Proper sealing of the roof entry plate is crucial to prevent water leaks.
  • Cable Alteration: While the main cable length can be altered, RSE is not responsible for issues arising from incorrect alteration, and such issues may void the warranty. High-quality satellite F connectors must be used if the cable is shortened.
  • Troubleshooting: For problems, contact RSE for inspection/service or advice.
