How to fix a Ryobi Trimmer that won't start?

  If your Ryobi Trimmer engine won't start, it could be due to several reasons: a lack of spark, no fuel, or a flooded engine. Try cleaning or replacing the spark plug and resetting the spark plug gap. Push the primer bulb until it's full of fuel; if it doesn't fill, the primary fuel delivery system might be blocked, and you should contact a service dealer. If the primer bulb fills, the engine may be flooded. Set the start lever to the START position, squeeze the trigger, and repeatedly pull the rope until the engine starts. Note that it might require numerous pulls.

  If your Ryobi Trimmer engine doesn't reach full speed and emits excessive smoke, the air filter screen or spark arrestor screen may be dirty, or the spark plug may be fouled. Clean the air filter screen. You can also clean or replace the spark plug and reset the spark plug gap. For the spark arrestor screen, contact a servicing dealer.

  If the line on your Ryobi Trimmer won't advance, it could be welded to itself, there might not be enough line on the spool, the line could be worn too short, tangled, or the engine speed might be too slow. Replace the line or install more line. You can also pull the lines while alternately pressing down on and releasing the spool retainer, or remove the line from the spool and rewind it. Make sure to advance the line at full throttle.

  If your Ryobi Trimmer engine starts, runs, and accelerates but won't idle, the idle speed screw on the carburetor likely needs adjustment. Turn the idle speed screw clockwise to increase the idle speed. Refer to Figure 28.

  If grass wraps around the driveshaft housing and string head of your Ryobi Trimmer, it might be because you're cutting tall grass at ground level or operating the trimmer at part throttle. Cut tall grass from the top down to prevent wrapping, and operate the trimmer at full throttle.
