Overview

The RYOBI 18 Volt Pole Hedge Trimmer, model P26010, is an extended-reach, battery-operated power tool designed for trimming and shaping hedges and shrubbery. This cordless device offers enhanced mobility and ease of use for outdoor applications.

Function Description:

The primary function of this tool is to cut and shape hedges and shrubs. It features a long pole design, allowing users to reach higher areas without the need for a ladder, enhancing safety and convenience. The hedge trimmer head is equipped with sharp cutting blades that move in a reciprocating motion to efficiently cut through branches and foliage. The tool is designed for two-handed operation to ensure proper control and stability during use.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Motor: 18 V DC
  • Blade Length: 18 in. (457.2 mm)
  • Cutting Capacity: Up to 5/8 in. (15.9 mm)
  • Cutting Speed: 3,000 cuts/min.
  • Power Source: Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack (sold separately).
  • Head Adjustment: Four-position pivoting head for versatile cutting angles.

Usage Features:

  • Extended Reach: The pole design allows for trimming overhead and in hard-to-reach areas, reducing the need for ladders and improving safety.
  • Four-Position Pivoting Head: The trimmer head can be adjusted to four different positions by pressing a pivot button, enabling users to customize the cutting angle for various tasks and hedge shapes. The trimmer will not operate unless the head is securely locked into a position.
  • Two-Handed Operation: The tool is designed to be held with both hands for optimal control and balance, especially important for an extended-reach tool. This includes a front handle/shaft and a rear handle.
  • Lock-Out Feature: A trigger lock-out mechanism prevents accidental starting, enhancing user safety. To start, the user must press and hold the trigger lock-out before depressing the switch trigger. Releasing the trigger automatically resets the lock to the locked position.
  • Shoulder Harness: The product includes a shoulder harness that connects to strap hangers on the tool, helping to distribute the weight and reduce user fatigue during prolonged operation. The harness can be adjusted for a comfortable fit and features quick-release spring clips for emergency disengagement.
  • Battery System: The trimmer operates on an 18 V lithium-ion battery pack (sold separately). The battery pack is easily installed and removed by inserting it into the battery port and depressing a latch. Proper alignment and secure seating of the battery pack are crucial for operation and to prevent damage to internal components.
  • Cutting Techniques:
    • Level Hedges: A string line can be used as a guide to achieve a consistently level cut.
    • Shaping: Hedges should be trimmed slightly narrower at the top to allow more exposure to sunlight and promote uniform growth.
    • New Growth: A wide sweeping action is recommended to feed stems directly into the cutting blade.
    • Older Growth: Thicker stems are best trimmed with a sawing movement.
    • Pacing: Avoid forcing the trimmer through heavy shrubbery; reduce pace if blades slow down to prevent binding.
    • Material Size: Do not attempt to cut stems or twigs larger than 5/8 in. in diameter. For larger stems, a non-powered hand saw or pruning saw should be used.
  • Safety Precautions During Use:
    • Always clear the work area of cords, lights, wires, or loose strings that could entangle the blade.
    • Never operate near power lines, fencing, posts, buildings, or other immovable objects.
    • Inspect blades for damage after hitting hard objects.
    • Maintain a stable and balanced footing.
    • Wear gloves, eye protection with side shields (ANSI Z87.1 compliant), and head protection, especially when trimming overhead.
    • Keep bystanders, children, and pets at least 50 feet away.
    • Do not use in bad weather conditions, particularly when there is a risk of lightning.
    • Keep hands away from the blade at all times.
    • Ensure the handle and guard are properly assembled before use.
    • Always stop the motor and remove the battery pack before clearing jammed material or servicing.

Maintenance Features:

  • Blade Lubrication: For easier operation and longer blade life, the cutting blades should be lubricated before and after each use. Light-weight machine oil should be applied along the edge of the top blade. Periodic oiling is recommended for extended use.
  • Blade Sharpening: The blades can be sharpened using an 8 in. smooth round file (1/4 in. or 7/32 in. diameter). The blade assembly should be clamped in a vise, and each exposed cutting surface of the blade teeth should be filed, retaining the original angle. The battery pack must be removed before sharpening.
  • Cleaning: The hedge trimmer should be cleaned thoroughly after each use. Dirt and debris should be removed from the body using a damp cloth with a mild detergent. Avoid strong detergents, aromatic oils (pine, lemon), or solvents (kerosene) on plastic parts. Any moisture should be wiped off with a dry cloth. A small brush or air discharge from a vacuum cleaner can be used to clear dust from motor housing vents.
  • Storage: Always fit the blade cover over the cutting blades before storing or transporting the hedge trimmer to prevent accidental injury and blade damage. Store the unit indoors in a dry, well-ventilated place, inaccessible to children, and away from corrosive agents like garden chemicals and de-icing salts.
  • General Inspection: Before each use, inspect the entire product for damaged, missing, or loose parts (screws, nuts, bolts, caps). All fasteners and caps should be tightened securely, and any damaged or missing parts must be replaced before operation.
  • Service: All servicing should be performed by a qualified repair person using identical replacement parts to maintain tool safety. Damaged battery packs should only be serviced by the manufacturer or authorized service providers.
  • Water/Liquid Avoidance: Never douse or squirt the unit with water or any other liquid. Do not expose the product to rain or wet conditions, as corrosive liquids can damage electronic components and battery packs, leading to short circuits, fire, or serious injury.
