Overview

This document is the operator's manual for the Ryobi RY08510 Blower/Vacuum, a versatile outdoor power tool designed for dependability, ease of operation, and user safety.

Function Description:

The Ryobi RY08510 is a 2-cycle engine-powered tool that functions as both a blower and a vacuum/mulcher. Its primary purpose is to clear leaves and other debris from lawns, decks, driveways, and other outdoor areas. As a blower, it uses a powerful air stream to move debris. When converted to a vacuum, it sucks up debris, which is then mulched by a steel blade and collected in a vacuum bag.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Weight: 10.4 lbs.
  • Engine Displacement: 25.4cc
  • Air Velocity (Blower):
    • MPH: 205
    • CFM: 420
  • Fuel Mixture: 50:1 ratio of unleaded gasoline (87 octane or higher) and Premium Exact Mix™ 2-cycle engine oil.
    • 1 gallon (US) gasoline requires 2.6 oz. of oil.
    • 1 Liter gasoline requires 20 cc (20 ml) of oil.
  • Spark Plug: Champion RCJ4 with a 0.63 mm (0.025 in.) electrode gap.
  • Mulching Ratio: 12:1 (efficiently reduces leaves).
  • Emissions Compliance Period: Category C=50 hours, B=125 hours, and A=300 hours, as indicated on the Emissions Compliance label.

Usage Features:

The RY08510 is designed for user comfort and efficiency.

  • Starting and Stopping: The manual provides detailed instructions for starting a cold or warm engine, including using the primer bulb and choke lever, and stopping the unit by releasing the throttle trigger and pressing the engine switch to "O" or STOP.
  • Blower Operation:
    • Users should hold the blower with their right hand on the upper handle.
    • It's recommended to operate the blower at the lowest possible throttle speed to accomplish the task.
    • To avoid scattering debris, users should blow around the outer edges of a debris pile rather than directly into the center.
    • The unit comes with a sweeper nozzle for covering more area and a high velocity nozzle with a wet leaf scraper, specifically designed for wet, sticky leaves and for scraping debris.
    • The full blower nozzle extension should be used to keep the air stream close to the ground.
    • Users are advised to operate power equipment at reasonable hours to avoid disturbing others and to limit the number of pieces of equipment used to reduce sound levels.
    • Safety precautions include watching out for children, pets, open windows, or freshly washed cars, and safely blowing debris away.
  • Vacuum Operation:
    • Conversion to vacuum mode is tool-free.
    • The vacuum handle allows for safe and comfortable operation.
    • The vacuum bag attaches easily using an adaptor.
    • Vacuum tubes are installed without tools.
    • During vacuuming, the vacuum bag strap should be placed over the right shoulder, with the upper handle held in the left hand and the lower handle in the right hand.
    • To prevent clogging, the vacuum tube should be moved side to side along the outer edge of debris piles, not directly into the center.
    • The engine should be held higher than the inlet end of the vacuum tube, and the tube should always be pointed downhill when working on a hillside.
    • A vacuum door interlock prevents the engine from starting if the vacuum door is open or tubes are not installed.
    • Users are warned not to pick up rocks, broken glass, bottles, or other similar objects to prevent injury or damage to the unit.
    • In case of clogging, the engine must be stopped, and the spark plug wire disconnected before clearing the obstruction.
  • Cruise Control/Throttle Lock: This feature allows the user to operate the blower without continuously holding the throttle trigger. It can be engaged by pulling the lever back to the desired throttle setting and released by pushing the lever forward.
  • Fueling: The unit requires pre-mixed gasoline and 2-cycle oil. Fueling should always be done outdoors with the engine stopped and cool, at least 30 ft. away from any refueling area, and without smoking. The fuel cap should be loosened slowly to release pressure and tightened securely after refueling. Spilled fuel must be wiped off, and any fuel leaks corrected before use.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and performance of the RY08510.

  • General Maintenance: Avoid using solvents on plastic parts. Clean cloths should be used to remove dirt, dust, oil, and grease. Brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-based products, and penetrating oils should not come into contact with plastic parts.
  • Air Filter: The air filter should be checked and cleaned after every 8 hours of operation and replaced annually. Cleaning involves loosening the knob, removing the cover, lifting out the filter, washing it with warm, soapy water, rinsing, squeezing dry, and reinstalling it properly.
  • Spark Arrestor: The muffler contains a spark arrestor screen that may become dirty over time and may need replacement by an authorized servicing dealer. The blower should never be run without the spark arrestor in place to avoid fire hazards.
  • Exhaust Port and Muffler: Carbon deposits can build up in the exhaust port, muffler, and spark arrestor screen, leading to power loss. Removal of these deposits should be performed by qualified service technicians.
  • Vacuum Bag: A dirty bag reduces performance. It should be turned inside out and shaken after use, and washed in soapy water at least once a year. If deteriorated, a replacement bag should be obtained.
  • Fuel Cap: The fuel cap contains a non-serviceable filter and check valve. A clogged filter or faulty check valve can cause poor engine performance. If performance improves when the cap is loosened, the cap should be replaced. A leaking fuel cap is a fire hazard and must be replaced immediately.
  • Spark Plug: The spark plug should be replaced annually with a Champion RCJ4.
  • Storage (1 Month or Longer): All fuel should be drained from the tank into an approved container, and the engine run until it stops. The blower should be cleaned of all foreign material and stored in a cool, well-ventilated place, inaccessible to children, and away from corrosive agents. Federal and local regulations for gasoline storage and handling must be followed.
  • Parts Ordering/Service: For repair parts or service, users should contact their nearest Ryobi Authorized Service Center, providing the model number (RY08510) and serial number. The manual provides a toll-free number (1-800-860-4050) and website (www.ryobitools.com) for assistance.
  • Warranty: The product comes with a limited warranty covering defects in material and workmanship. For personal, family, or household use, the warranty is two years. For commercial or rental use, it is 90 days. The warranty does not cover misuse, neglect, accident, improper maintenance, alterations, or normal wear items. It also includes a Federal and California Emission Control Systems Warranty for the engine, covering emission-related parts for two years.
