IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
q High, prolonged fever requires medical attention especially for young children. Please contact your physician.
q Do not allow children to take their temperatures unattended.
q Read the enclosed instructions carefully to ensure accurate temperature readings. Temperature readings are
affected by many factors including exercise, drinking hot or cold beverages prior to taking a reading as well as
technique.
q Do not allow children to walk or run during temperature taking. The probe could present a hazard.
q Oral, underarm, and rectal temperatures vary by approximately 0.9°F/0.5°C.
WHAT IS A “NORMAL” TEMPERATURE?:
Temperature readings vary in different individuals. A normal temperature refers to each individual’s average
temperature while they are well. Normal average temperatures range form 97°F/36.1°C to 100°F/37.7°C when
taken orally. See “RECTAL USE” and “UNDERARM (AXILLARY) USE” for the oral equivalent of a rectal or
underarm reading.
HOW TO TAKE TEMPERATURE:
1. Select oral, underarm or rectal as your measurement site based on the individual requiring a temperature
measurement.
2. Push the on-off button located beside the display window. The thermometer will beep, backlight will
illuminate, and the display will read: “188.8°F
M
”.
q
This is a function check indicating the unit is working properly. The thermometer will automatically display the last
temperature reading for two seconds. The backlight will remain illuminated during the display of the last reading.
Ne
xt the thermometer will read “L” and begin measuring temperature when exposed to body heat.
3. The °F (or °C) symbol will continuously flash until completion of the temperature taking process. Please note
that the “
q indicates a low battery. See instructions for replacing battery before measuring temperature. An
“ERR” message in the window indicates your unit is not functioning properly. Do not expect an accurate
t
emper
a
tur
e r
eading if this low battery indicator is present. Out-of-range indicator displays “L” when
measurement is lower than 90.0°F and “H” when higher than 109.9°F.
4.
When peak t
emperature is reached, the °F (or °C) symbol will stop flashing, the thermometer will beep
r
epea
t
edly
, and the backlight will illuminate. Please note: It is not necessary to hear the beep to ensure
the peak temperature has been reached. When the °F (or °C) symbol stops flashing and the display reads a
consistent temperature, the peak temperature has been reached. If the thermometer stays in the measuring site,
the temperature may rise slightly over time even when the °F (or °C) does not flash.
5. Read and record the temperature and time for reference. The reading will automatically be stored in
the memory.
6. Push the on-off bu
tt
on t
o turn the unit off
. If y
ou do not turn the unit off
, it will shut off
automatically in approximately 10 minutes.
R
ECTAL USE:
q Commonly used for babies, young children or when it is difficult to take an oral or underarm temperature.
q Lubricate probe tip with a water-soluble lubricant or petroleum jelly.
q G
ently insert the probe tip no more than 1/2 inch (1.3) cm into the rectum. Do not force the tip into the
r
ectum if resistance is encountered. Please note the ring at the end of the probe helps ensure you don’t
insert too far. Reference over insertion gauge above.
q Clean the thermometer as recommended under the “How to care for this product” section.
q T
he peak temperature should be reached in approximately 8 seconds.
q R
ead the digital display and subtract 0.9˚F/0.5˚C to obtain an oral equivalent temperature.
U
NDERARM (AXILLARY) USE:
q Wipe underarm with a dry towel.
q P
lace probe tip in armpit and bring arm down against the body. The thermometer
should be pointing upward in the same direction as your body if possible.
q T
he time required for an accurate underarm temperature may be 8 seconds or
longer depending on placement of the probe and closure of the arm against the body.
q Read the digital display and add .9˚F/.5˚C to obtain an oral equivalent temperature.
ORAL USE: (For children 4 years and older)
q Do not drink hot or cold fluids, exercise, or perform other activities that will raise or
lower temperature readings when compared to your normal, average temperature.
The mouth should remain closed up to 5 minutes before attempting a reading.
q Place the probe tip well under the tongue, (See diagram) as indicated by the “a“.
Instruct children not to bite down on the probe.
q The peak temperature should be reached in approximately 8 seconds. Opening the
mouth could result in a longer time for a reading.
CHANGING THE BATTERY:
When the “ q appears in the lower right of the display, the battery is exhausted and needs
replacing. Make sure a battery of the same type is on hand and proceed as follows:
Remove battery compartment lid. Insert new equivalent battery type (SR41).
Ensure battery is correctly positioned with the+ facing up or towards the front
of the unit. Carefully replace the battery compartment lid. Properly dispose of
the batteries, keeping them from small children and heat.
WARNING: KEEP BATTERY OUT OF CHILD’S REACH.
SWALLOWING BATTERY COULD BE FATAL. BATTERY SHOULD NOT BE
CHARGED OR PLACED INTO EXTREME HEAT AS IT MAY RUPTURE.
Measurement Range:
90.0°F to 109.9°F/32.0°C to 42.9°C.
Measurement Accuracy:
0.2°F/0.1°C between 96.0°F to
107.0°F/35.5°C to 42°C.
