WARNING: Do not manually operate the SB-V(H) gearbox (see figures 1 and 2) with devices
other than the installed handwheel or wrench nut. Using additive force devices (cheater bars,
wheel wrenches, pipe wrenches, or other devices of this nature) on the gearbox handwheel,
wrench or wrench nut may cause serious personal injury and/or damage to the gearbox or valve.

Overview

The SAMBO SB-V series bevel gear operator is a device designed for the controlled operation of valves and other actuated equipment. It facilitates the manual or actuated opening and closing of these devices, providing a robust and reliable solution for various industrial applications.

Function Description

The primary function of the SB-V series bevel gear operator is to translate rotational input into a controlled output, typically for valve stem movement. The core mechanism involves a bevel gear set that provides a mechanical advantage, allowing for easier operation of valves, especially those requiring significant torque. The operator can be driven manually via a handwheel or wrench nut, or it can be coupled with a motor actuator for automated operation. The design incorporates a stem nut that engages with the valve stem, enabling linear movement of the stem as the bevel gear rotates. Different configurations, such as those with a threaded stem nut or a blank stem nut, cater to various valve stem designs. Optional spur gear attachments (single or double reduction) can be integrated to further increase the mechanical advantage, allowing for the operation of even larger or more resistant valves. The housing encloses and protects the internal components, including the bevel gear, bevel pinion, drive sleeve, and various bearings, ensuring smooth and reliable operation.

Usage Features

The SB-V series offers several features that enhance its usability and adaptability. The operator is designed for straightforward installation onto valve mounting flanges. For models with a threaded stem nut (V0 through V9 and V35H through V9H), installation involves positioning the gearbox, engaging the valve stem with the stem nut, lowering the gearbox onto the valve, and securing it to the flange. For models with a blank stem nut, the stem nut can be machined to precisely fit the specific valve stem, offering customization. Stem cover adapters are provided to accommodate standard NPS pipe sizes for stem covers, with an option to remove the adapter for BSPP pipe threads if needed. This flexibility ensures compatibility with a wide range of valve types and stem configurations. The ability to integrate single or double reduction spur gear attachments allows users to select the appropriate level of mechanical advantage for their specific application, optimizing operation for different valve sizes and torque requirements. The operator is intended for use with its installed handwheel or wrench nut, emphasizing controlled and safe operation.

Maintenance Features

Maintenance of the SB-V series bevel gear operator is designed to be manageable and to ensure long-term reliability. The manual provides detailed instructions for both disassembly and reassembly, covering various models (V0 through V9 and V35H through V9H) and optional spur gear attachments. This includes steps for removing and reinstalling components such as the stem nut, thrust base, bevel pinion, bevel gear, drive sleeve, and various bearings. Lubrication is a critical aspect of maintenance, with specific recommendations for Zenith EPSB-2 lubricant (calcium soap base) for all models. The lubricant level should be checked every 18 months, and the gearbox should be flushed and repacked with fresh lubricant if contaminants are found. The manual emphasizes the importance of using lubricants of the same soap base or obtaining approval from the lubricant manufacturer before mixing. Replacement of worn or damaged O-rings and gaskets is crucial for maintaining proper sealing and operation. During reassembly, attention to detail is required, such as ensuring proper engagement of splines, correct placement of O-rings and gaskets, and proper backlash of the bevel gear set. The use of genuine SAMBO replacement parts is strongly advised to prevent personal injury and damage to the gearbox or valve. Regular inspection and adherence to the provided maintenance schedule contribute to the longevity and safe operation of the device.
