Overview

This document is a user manual for a Samsung LED TV, specifically from the Series 4000. It provides comprehensive instructions on setting up, operating, and maintaining the television.

Function Description

The Samsung LED TV is designed to provide high-quality visual and audio entertainment. It features a wide screen (16:9 aspect ratio) optimized for full-motion video, and offers various input options to connect to a range of external devices. The TV includes a built-in HD digital tuner, allowing users to view non-subscription HD broadcasts without an additional cable box or STB (Set-Top-Box) satellite receiver. A key feature is the e-Manual, which is integrated into the TV's system, providing on-screen instructions and guidance for all its functionalities. The TV also supports "My Contents" for playing music, pictures, and movies from a USB device, and "Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC)" for controlling connected Samsung devices with a single remote.

Usage Features

Initial Setup (Plug & Play):

Upon first turning on the TV, a "Plug & Play" sequence guides the user through basic settings. This includes selecting the OSD language, choosing between "Home Use" and "Store Demo" modes (with "Home Use" recommended for typical environments), setting the clock mode (Auto or Manual), and selecting search options for auto-tuning channels (Air or Cable, with options for Digital or Analog and various cable system formats like STD, HRC, or IRC). The channel search process can take up to 30 minutes. The "Plug & Play" can be reset through the System menu.

Remote Control:

The remote control is equipped with Braille points on the Power, Channel, and Volume buttons for visually impaired users. It allows users to turn the TV on/off, select input sources (HDMI, Component, AV, PC, USB), adjust volume, change channels, access the main on-screen menu (OSD), display channel lists, set sleep timers, and view information on the TV screen. Dedicated buttons are available for "My Contents," "Watch TV," "Source," "E-MANUAL," "SRS TruSurround HD" mode, picture mode selection ("P.MODE"), picture size ("P.SIZE"), caption decoder ("CC"), and MTS (stereo, mono, or SAP broadcast).

On-Screen Display (OSD) Navigation:

The OSD is accessed via the MENU button on the remote. Users navigate through menus like Picture, Sound, Channel, System, and Support using arrow buttons and confirm selections with the ENTER button. Values for items can be adjusted using the left/right arrow buttons. The EXIT button closes the OSD.

Connecting AV Devices:

The TV offers multiple connection options for AV devices:

  • HDMI: Recommended for best quality HD picture (up to 1080p). Devices like DVD players, Blu-ray players, HD cable boxes, and HD satellite receivers can be connected. HDMI IN 1 (DVI) is specifically used for video when connecting via HDMI/DVI cable, requiring the PC/DVI AUDIO IN jack for audio. Users are advised to use certified HDMI cables with a maximum thickness of 14mm.
  • Component: For HD connections (up to 1080p), offering better picture quality than A/V.
  • Audio/Video (480i only): For standard definition devices.
  • Optical (Digital) or Audio (Analog): For connecting to digital audio systems, amplifiers, or home theaters. When using the optical output, users should decrease the volume of both the TV and the external system. 5.1 CH audio is available when the TV is connected to an external device supporting it.

Connecting to a PC:

PCs can be connected using an HDMI cable, HDMI to DVI cable, or a D-sub cable. The TV supports various display modes and resolutions, with optimal resolution at 1360 x 768@60Hz. The interlace mode is not supported, and non-standard video formats may cause abnormal operation.

Changing Input Source:

The SOURCE button allows users to select between TV and external input sources. The TV highlights connected inputs in the Source menu. The "Edit Name" feature allows users to assign custom names (e.g., VCR, DVD, Game, PC) to input sources for easier identification.

e-Manual:

The e-Manual is an interactive guide built into the TV. It can be accessed via the E-MANUAL button on the remote or through the MENU > Support > e-Manual path. Users can navigate categories and topics using arrow buttons and ENTER. The "Try Now" feature allows direct access to the corresponding OSD menu for a topic. The e-Manual also includes a "Zoom" function to magnify the screen and an index page for searching topics by letter.

Securing the TV:

Instructions are provided for installing the TV stand and wall mount. When installing the stand, specific components and screws are used, and it's emphasized that at least two people should lift and move the TV. For wall mounting, the manual specifies VESA screw hole dimensions and warns against using non-compliant screws or mounting at an angle greater than 15 degrees. A TV-Holder Kit (sold separately) is described for securing the TV to a wall or cabinet to prevent it from tipping over, especially important for households with children.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning and Care:

The manual advises against spraying water or cleaning agents directly onto the product to prevent damage, fire, or electric shock. Instead, the TV should be cleaned with a soft cloth dampened with a small amount of water. If a sticker is removed from the screen, any residues should be cleaned.

Still Image Warning:

To prevent "burn-in" or "ghost images" on the LED screen, users are advised to avoid displaying still images (e.g., JPEG files, channel logos, stock tickers, or 4:3 format programs) for long periods. Recommendations include varying programming, always displaying images in full screen, reducing brightness and contrast to the minimum required for desired picture quality, and frequently using TV features designed to reduce image retention.

Troubleshooting:

A troubleshooting section addresses common issues such as the TV not turning on, turning off automatically, no picture/video, and remote control malfunction. Solutions include checking power cords, ensuring correct input source selection, replacing remote batteries, and rebooting connected devices. Users are directed to samsung.com/support or customer service for further assistance.

Firmware Updates:

The manual notes that users can keep their TV in optimum condition by upgrading the latest firmware from the Samsung website via USB.
