Overview

The Sangamo S250/Q550 Series is a range of electro-mechanical, round pattern time switches designed for various timing applications. These devices are available in both 24-hour and solar dial versions, offering a reliable and highly accurate means of controlling electrical circuits.

Function Description:

The primary function of the S250/Q550 series time switches is to provide automated ON/OFF switching operations over a 24-hour cycle. Depending on the specific model, these switches can offer up to 3 ON/OFF operations (or 6 changeover operations) within a 24-hour period. Key features include:

  • Accurate Time-Keeping: Both S250 and Q550 switches are controlled by an electronic quartz module, ensuring precise time-keeping.
  • Power Reserve (Q550 models): Q550 models include a back-up battery that provides a 100-hour reserve in the event of a power failure, maintaining accurate time during outages.
  • High Timing Resolution: The dial face is marked in 15-minute divisions, allowing for power to be switched on for periods as short as 15 minutes, with an accuracy of ± 3 minutes.
  • Selective Omission: Some models offer features for selective omission of ON or OFF switching operations on chosen days of the week.
  • Early Operation: Certain variants provide an "early operation" feature, allowing for a particular switching operation to be made at an earlier pre-set time on any one day of the week.
  • Solar Dial Versions: Solar dial models track sunrise and sunset, enabling ON/OFF switching operations to automatically adjust with natural light cycles. These models are factory-set to operate at sunset and sunrise in localities based on the Greenwich Meridian. Longitudinal errors can be compensated by adjusting operating pins within slots of operating arms, which are calibrated in quarter-hour intervals. Latitudinal variations are typically accounted for by supplying dials suitable for different latitudes.
  • Fixed 'off'/change-over Operation (20:30 to 01:00): For specific models (S251 Form 13, S253 Form 13, Q551 Form 13, Q553 Form 13, Q550 Form 13), this operation can be obtained as an alternative to the sunrise operation by transferring the operating pin from the solar operating arm to the midnight bridge. The midnight bridge is calibrated in quarter-hour intervals for setting fixed operations within this timeframe.
  • Fixed Early Morning 'on'/change-over Operation (03:15 to 08:30): Form 14 solar dial switches feature a small sector-bridge with a spring-tensioned lever and operating pin, allowing for fixed operations within this early morning window. A timing lever prevents the fixed pin from operating when the solar operating time coincides with or is earlier than the fixed time operation.
  • Manual Button: A manual button (M) allows for immediate opening or closing of the switch contacts, anticipating the next scheduled operation without affecting subsequent programmed operations.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Current, Voltage, Frequency: As shown on the identification plate of the switch.
  • Ambient Temperature: As shown on the identification plate of the switch.
  • Live Parts: Enclosed, meaning the timer is totally protected by its enclosure.
  • Dirt Protection: Designed for normal domestic dust deposits only.
  • Moisture Protection: Ordinary, meaning it has no special protection against moisture.
  • Shock Protection: Class 1, with functional insulation throughout.
  • Earthing: The timer must be earthed.
  • Contacts: Micro-disconnection type.
  • Fixed Wiring: Terminals are for fixed wiring only. Provision must be made in the fixed wiring for a means of disconnection from the supply having a contact separation of at least 3mm on all poles.
  • Battery (Q550 models): Contains a rechargeable battery for memory and data retention, providing a 100-hour reserve. The battery is built into the circuit board and has an expectancy life of 10 years (environment-dependent). A battery replacement kit is available.
  • Minimum Period Between Operations:
    • For a single pair of 'on' and 'off' levers: 15 minutes.
    • For more than one pair of levers: 1¾ hours between consecutive 'on' and 'off' levers.
    • For early operation switches: The hinged lever must be set at least three hours after the preceding normal lever L and at least 1¾ hours before the following normal lever L.
  • Accuracy: The dial can be set to an accuracy of ± 3 minutes.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with current IEE wiring regulations. The unit must be fitted to the supplied base.
  • Setting the 24 Hour Dial:
    1. Hold the dial firmly and turn knob H clockwise until levers L are easily movable.
    2. Set levers to the required operating times.
    3. Re-tighten knob H.
    4. Turn the dial in the direction of the arrow until pointer P (marked 'time') indicates the current time of day.
    5. Each small division on the dial represents ¼ of an hour.
  • Setting Day Omitting Device (when fitted): This device prevents 'on' (or 'off' in some models) operations on selected days. To omit operations on a particular day, turn inset 1 clockwise with a screwdriver until the arrowhead points outwards.
  • Setting Early Operation Device (when fitted): To set lever E, slacken screw S and adjust the lever until the 'U' shaped portion is at the appropriate day. Set the special hinged lever to the required time.
  • Setting the Solar Dial:
    1. Turn the small five-point wheel D until the correct calendar date is indicated through the small aperture C. Each calendar month is divided into six equal divisions, representing five days.
    2. Turn the main dial until pointer P indicates the current time of day (Greenwich Mean Time).
  • Converting Form 2 Dial to Form 1 (2 ON/OFFs to 1 ON/OFF):
    1. Remove the centre locking nut and lift away the dial face.
    2. Remove the top ON/OFF lever and washers.
    3. Replace the dial face.
    4. Replace the locking nut.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement (Q550 models): The Q550 product contains a battery that will eventually cease to operate or run slow after its 10-year expectancy life. A battery replacement kit is available from customer services and should be fitted by a suitably qualified person.
  • Disposal: The Q550 range battery should not be disposed of with normal domestic waste. It must be removed by a competent engineer and disposed of according to local regulations, or returned to Sangamo's Port Glasgow address for safe disposal, marked for the attention of the E.O.L. Department.
  • WEEE Regulations: At the end of its life, the product should be returned to Sangamo's address for suitable environmental recycling, recovery, and/or disposal, marked for the E.O.L. Department.
  • Guarantee: The switch is guaranteed for five years from the date of manufacture (applies to U.K. and S. Ireland only). The guarantee is invalid if the mechanism has been tampered with or used in an unsuitable environment.
  • Customer Care Policy: Sangamo operates a continuous improvement programme and welcomes comments and complaints to improve customer service.
  • Product Improvement: Due to continuous product improvement and development, specifications in the guide may be subject to change without prior notice.
