Overview

The Satechi Triple 4K Display Docking Station is a versatile hub designed to expand the connectivity and display capabilities of a host device, primarily through a USB-C connection. It allows users to connect multiple external displays, various USB peripherals, an Ethernet network, and audio devices, making it suitable for professional and multi-monitor setups.

Function Description:

The primary function of this docking station is to enable a host device (such as a laptop or desktop computer) to connect to up to three external 4K displays simultaneously, along with a range of other peripherals. It leverages both DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode) and DisplayLink technology to achieve its multi-display capabilities. The dock acts as a central hub, simplifying cable management and expanding the I/O options of devices with limited ports.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Display Output:
    • Supports up to three 4K displays.
    • Utilizes DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode) for one HDMI output (Display 1).
    • Utilizes DisplayLink software for two HDMI outputs (Display 2 & 3) and two DisplayPort outputs (Display 2 & 3).
    • DisplayLink software is required for video output from Display 2 and 3 groups (HDMI and DisplayPort).
  • USB Connectivity:
    • Two USB-A 3.1 ports: Up to 10Gbps data transfer and fast charging.
    • One USB-C 3.1 port: Up to 10Gbps data transfer and fast charging.
    • Two USB-A 3.0 ports: Up to 5Gbps data transfer.
    • One USB-C data port: Up to 5Gbps data transfer.
    • Note: USB-A and USB-C 3.1 ports do not support CD readers, including Apple SuperDrive. The USB-C data port also does not support charging or CD readers.
  • Ethernet:
    • Gigabit Ethernet port (RJ45): Up to 1Gbps.
  • Audio:
    • 3.5mm Audio I/O jack for headphones and microphones.
  • Power:
    • Powered by an included external power adapter.
    • The host device will not receive power when connected via USB-A.

Usage Features:

  1. Initial Setup:

    • Connect the included power adapter to the dock. The dock will automatically power on.
    • Connect the included USB-C cable from the dock to the host device. An included USB-C to USB-A adapter can be used if the host device only has a USB-A port.
    • Crucially, download and install the DisplayLink software from https://satechi.net/pages/displaylink-instructions on your host device. This software is essential for the HDMI and DisplayPort outputs in Display 2 & 3 groups to function.
  2. Power Management:

    • The dock powers on automatically when the power adapter is connected.
    • To turn off the dock, press the power button located on top.
  3. Display Connections:

    • HDMI: Connect up to three HDMI-enabled monitors. One HDMI connection must be made via Display 1 (utilizing DP Alt Mode). The other two HDMI connections should be made via Display 2 & 3 (utilizing DisplayLink).
    • DisplayPort: Connect up to two DisplayPort-enabled monitors using DisplayLink via Display 2 & 3.
    • Important DisplayLink Note: DisplayLink software must be installed for HDMI and DisplayPorts in Display 2 & 3 groups to output video. If connecting to a USB-A host device using the included adapter, only video groups 2 and 3 will function via DisplayLink software; video group 1 (DP Alt Mode) will not function.
  4. USB Peripheral Connections:

    • Use the two USB-A 3.1 ports and one USB-C 3.1 port for high-speed data transfers (up to 10Gbps) and fast charging of compatible devices.
    • Use the two USB-A 3.0 ports for file transfers up to 5Gbps.
    • Use the USB-C data port for data transfers up to 5Gbps.
  5. Network Connection:

    • Connect an RJ45 Ethernet cable to the dock's Gigabit Ethernet port for a wired network connection up to 1Gbps.
  6. Audio Connection:

    • Attach an audio device (headphones, microphone) to the 3.5mm Audio I/O jack.
    • Users will need to change sound output/input settings in their system preferences (e.g., System Preferences > Sound > Output/Input > USB Audio) when connecting headphones/mic.

Maintenance Features:

  • Software Updates: While not explicitly stated as a maintenance feature, ensuring the DisplayLink software is up-to-date is crucial for optimal performance and compatibility with new operating system versions.
  • Proper Ejection of Storage Devices: Prior to powering off the Docking Station, it is essential to properly eject all external storage devices connected to the dock. Failure to do so may result in data damage or corruption on those devices.
  • Physical Care: Keep the docking station in a clean, dry environment. Avoid obstructing ventilation ports to prevent overheating.

Attention Points:

  • When using a USB-A connection to the host device, the host device will not receive power from the dock.
  • DisplayLink software is mandatory for achieving up to three external displays.
  • When connecting to a USB-A host device using the included adapter, only video groups 2 and 3 will function via DisplayLink software. Video group 1 (DP Alt mode) will not function.
  • The USB-A and USB-C 3.1 ports, as well as the USB-C data port, do not support CD readers, including Apple SuperDrive.
  • Always ensure external storage devices are properly ejected before powering off the docking station to prevent data loss or corruption.
