Overview

The Iridium 9575 (Extreme) is a robust satellite phone designed for reliable communication in remote areas where traditional cellular networks are unavailable. Its primary function is to provide voice calls and text messaging services globally, leveraging the Iridium satellite constellation.

Function Description:

The Iridium 9575 (Extreme) serves as a lifeline for individuals and teams operating in challenging environments. It enables users to make and receive calls to and from landlines, cell phones, and other satellite phones. Beyond voice communication, it supports text messaging to both cell phones and email addresses, offering a versatile communication toolkit. A key safety feature is the dedicated SOS button, which, when registered with Travel Safety Group Limited (GEOS), provides emergency assistance anywhere in the world. This makes the device particularly valuable for adventurers, field workers, and emergency responders.

Usage Features:

To begin using the Iridium 9575 (Extreme), users must ensure they are in an open area with a clear view of the sky, free from obstructions like trees or buildings. The antenna needs to be fully extended upwards for optimal signal acquisition. Powering on the device involves pressing and holding the power button until a beep is heard and the phone turns on. The phone will then search for a signal, which may take a few minutes, indicated by "Registered" on the screen when successful.

Making calls is straightforward:

  • To landlines/cell phones: Dial 00 > Country Code > Area Code > Phone Number (e.g., 00 1 941 955 1020). Dashes or spaces should not be included.
  • To other satellite phones: Dial 00 > Satellite Phone Number (e.g., 00 8816 1234 5678).
  • The "00" prefix can be replaced by a "+" if the phone is configured to display it automatically. Users will hear a series of beeps as the phone connects to the satellite before the call is established.

Receiving calls directly from a landline/cell phone requires the caller to dial 011 > Satellite Phone Number (e.g., 011 8816 1234 5678). Non-US/Canada callers should use 00 instead of 011. It's important to note that direct calls to the satellite phone are free for the satellite phone user but can be very expensive for the caller.

For a more cost-effective way for others to reach the satellite phone, the 2-Stage service is available. Callers dial 1 (480) 768-2500, wait for the voice prompt, and then enter the 12-digit satellite phone number. This method charges the caller only for a standard US call, with minutes debited from the satellite phone's plan.

Checking voicemail is integrated into the phone's menu system. Users navigate to Menu > Voicemail > Call Voicemail, enter their 12-digit satellite phone number, and then interrupt the greeting by pressing the star key (*). The voicemail password, which is the last 7 digits of the satellite phone number, is then entered.

Sending text messages offers flexibility:

  • To a cell phone: Users select Menu > Messages > Create Message, type their message (up to 160 characters), then choose Options > Send > Add. They can either select a contact from the phonebook or enter a new number using the format 00 > Country Code > Area Code > Phone Number (e.g., 00 1 941 955 1020). A "Message Sent" confirmation indicates success.
  • To an email address: The message is composed starting with the email address, followed by a space and the rest of the message (e.g., "email@domain.com having a great time!"). The total message, including the email address, is limited to 160 characters. When prompted for a destination number, users enter 00*2 and press "OK".
  • From an email address to the satellite phone: Senders email the satellite phone number followed by @msg.iridium.com (e.g., 881612345678@msg.iridium.com). The email content is limited to 160 characters, with the email address itself using 28 characters.
  • Using the Online Messaging Portal: Users can visit http://messaging.iridium.com, enter the satellite phone number in the "To" field, provide a Reply Email for responses, type their message (up to 160 characters), and click "Send Message".

The dedicated SOS button is a critical safety feature. Registration is required online at www.geosalliance.com/iridium to activate emergency assistance services provided by GEOS.

The phone features a clear display, a keypad for dialing and navigation, and soft keys for menu interaction. Volume keys are located on the side for easy adjustment. A 2-key navigation key facilitates menu browsing. The device also includes an earpiece, microphone, and accessory connector.

Maintenance Features:

Proper handling of the Iridium 9575 (Extreme) is crucial for its longevity. The antennas are described as fragile, and users are instructed to pull them gently upwards, avoiding twisting, which can cause damage.

Battery care is also emphasized. Batteries must be pressed firmly into place, ensuring they sit flush against the phone. If the battery is not properly seated, the phone may not charge, turn on, or the display may experience issues. The device charges via a USB adapter, with a USB port and power connector located at the bottom.

To ensure the phone is functioning correctly before a trip, it is mandatory to make a free test call to 00 1 480 752 5105. This practice helps confirm signal acquisition and call functionality.

Activating the SIM card is a necessary step. Users can contact SatellitePhoneStore.com by phone at +1.941.955.1020 or email Activations@SatellitePhoneStore.com for assistance.

Overall, the Iridium 9575 (Extreme) is designed for straightforward operation and robust performance in environments where conventional communication is not an option, with clear instructions for usage and essential maintenance tips to ensure reliable service.
