Do you have a question about the Scandinavian Scale Company KW and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The device described in the manual is the KW series of bench scales, manufactured by Scandinavian Scale Company AB. This is a versatile weighing scale designed for general purpose use, including counting and check-weighing functions.

Function Description

The KW series scales provide accurate, fast, and versatile weighing capabilities.

  • Weighing Mode: The primary function is to measure weight. The scale displays the weight value and the selected unit.
  • Zeroing: Users can set the zero point at any time, within 4% of the power-up zero, by pressing the ZERO/ENTER key. This is typically done when the platform is empty. The scale also features an automatic rezeroing function to compensate for minor drifting or accumulation of material.
  • Taring: The TARE key allows users to subtract the weight of a container, displaying only the net weight of the product. A tare value can also be entered manually using the keypad. The scale can be tared multiple times for adding different products sequentially.
  • Parts Counting: When in weighing mode, pressing the SMPL key initiates the parts counting function. The user is prompted to select a sample size (10, 20, 50, 100, or 200 parts) using the TARE/↑ key. After confirming the sample size with the SMPL key, the display shows the number of parts (pcs) as more weight is added. The FUNC key returns the scale to normal weighing.
  • Check-Weighing: This function allows the scale to sound an alarm when the weight on the platform meets or exceeds pre-set high and low limits stored in memory.
    • Check Range: Set a high limit and a low limit, where the high limit is greater than the low limit.
    • Check Key Point: Set the high and low limits to the same value.
    • Check Mode 2: When in check range, the display shows "OK" and the beeper sounds when the weight is between the limits. When at a check key point, "OK" is displayed and the beeper sounds when the weight is under the limits.
    • Check Mode 3: When in check range, the display shows "OK" and the beeper sounds when the weight is outside the limits. When at a check key point, "OK" is displayed and the beeper sounds when the weight is over the limits.
    • Setting Limits: Limits are set by accessing the "F0 H-L" function in the parameter menu. Users can set "SET HI" (high limit) and "SET LO" (low limit) values using the SMPL key to move the active digit and the TARE key to change the value.
    • Setting Check Weighing Mode: The mode is selected via the "F4 OFF" function, choosing between "BP 2" (check mode 2), "BP3" (check mode 3), or "BP1" (no sound).
    • Disabling Check-Weighing: To disable, set both high and low limits to zero.
  • Accumulated Total: The scale can accumulate total weights, either manually by pressing the PRINT key or automatically (if configured). This function is available only in weighing mode, not during parts counting. When a weight is stored, the display shows "ACC" followed by the count and then the total in memory for 2 seconds. The total can be viewed using the "F1 TOL" function in the parameter section.
  • Animal Scales: The KW can be configured as an animal scale, particularly when external resolution is less than 1/3000. In this mode, after an animal is placed on the platform and the reading stabilizes within a set range, a beep sounds, and the data is locked. When the animal leaves and the reading returns to zero, automatic accumulation occurs, and data can be printed if a mini printer is connected. The accumulation memory can be cleared by pressing the Print key when the scale is at zero in animal scale mode.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Display: Large, easy-to-read Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) with backlight. The display shows weight values, units (g/pcs, oz, %, tkglb), and indicators for TARE, GROSS, ZERO, Low Battery, Stability, Checkweighing (HI, OK, LO), and Parts Counting.
  • Keypad: Sealed, color-coded membrane switches.
  • Automatic Features: Includes automatic zero tracking and audible alarm for pre-set weights.
  • Accumulation Memory: Stores individual weights and recalls an accumulated total.
  • RS-232 Output (Optional):
    • Specifications: RS-232 output of weighing data, ASCII code, 8 data bits, No Parity.
    • Connector: 25-pin d-subminiature socket.
    • Pin Assignments: Pin 2: Output, Pin 3: Input (not used), Pin 5: Signal Ground.
    • Data Formats: Different formats for normal weighing (GS, NT, unit, accumulation number, total), parts counting (GS, NT, unit, average piece weight, number of parts), and recalling total weight (stars, total, count, weight).

Usage Features

  • User-Friendly Interface: The color-coded membrane switches and large LCDs with backlight aim for ease of use.
  • Parameter Settings: The scale has 6 user-settable parameters, accessible via the FUNC key. These include:
    • F0 H-L: Set high and low limits for check-weighing.
    • F1 TOL: Clear accumulation memory, print and clear total, or print total without clearing.
    • F2 unt: Select displayed unit of weight (kilogram, kg, g, Lb).
    • F3 ti: Set date (yy.mm.dd) and time (hh.mm.ss).
    • F4 off: Set clock on/off, backlight on/auto/off, and beep mode.
    • F5 Prt: Set RS-232 print trigger (only for technicians).
  • Navigation: Keys like TARE/↑, SMPL/➔, ZERO/ENTER, and PRINT/ESC are used for navigating menus, incrementing digits, confirming selections, and escaping.
  • Battery Operation: The indicator can operate from a battery for approximately 100 hours. A low battery symbol appears on the display when charging is needed. The scale will operate for about 10 hours after the symbol appears before automatically switching off.
  • Charging: To charge, simply plug the scale into mains power; it does not need to be turned on. Full charge takes 12 hours. An LED indicates charging status: green for full, red for nearly discharged, yellow for charging.

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Maintenance: The battery's ability to hold a full charge may degrade over time. If battery life becomes unacceptable, users are advised to contact their distributor.
  • Calibration:
    • Procedure: Turn the power off, then turn it back on. During the countdown from 9 to 0, press the FUNC/C key. When "CAL" is displayed, press PRINT and TARE keys in sequence. The display will show "unLoAd". Remove all weight and press ZERO/ENTER. The display shows "Load". Place the calibration weight and press ZERO/ENTER. The scale will show the last calibration weight; confirm with ZERO/ENTER or adjust using arrow keys.
    • Verification: After calibration, the scale should be checked for accuracy and linearity. If necessary, repeat calibration, ensuring the scale is stable.
    • Troubleshooting: If an error message appears, try calibrating again. If the problem persists, contact Scandinavian Scale Co AB or your dealer.
  • Error Codes: The manual lists specific error codes to aid in troubleshooting:
    • Over range: Remove weight. If persistent, contact dealer.
    • Err 1 (Date Setting Error): Enter date in correct format (yy:mm:dd) and reasonable values.
    • Err 2 (Time Setting Error): Enter time in correct format (hh:mm:ss) and reasonable values.
    • Err 4 (Zero Setting Error): Scale was outside normal zero setting range. Remove weight, try again. Use TARE to set zero. If persistent, contact dealer.
    • Err 6 (A/D out of range): Values from A/D converter are outside normal range. Remove weight if overloaded, ensure pan is attached. Indicates possible load cell or electronics fault. If persistent, contact dealer.
