Overview

This document is the owner's manual for the Sea Ray 58 Sedan Bridge (International • 585 Sedan Bridge) yacht. It provides comprehensive information on the boat's operation, safety, maintenance, and various systems.

General Information and Responsibilities:

The manual emphasizes that the owner/operator is responsible for the safe operation of the boat and the safety of passengers. It recommends taking a boating safety course, getting hands-on training, understanding "rules of the road," and learning navigation. The manual also outlines the dealer's responsibilities, which include demonstrating safety systems, orienting the owner to general operation, reviewing warranty information, and providing the complete Owner's Manual Packet.

Propulsion System:

The yacht is equipped with twin D2848 LE403 V8 MAN® (T-861hp-571KW) engines. The manual stresses the importance of proper attention and maintenance for engine longevity. It advises against operating the engine at higher than maximum recommended RPM and recommends consulting the Engine Operator’s Manual for detailed information. The boat has start-in-gear protection, requiring gear/throttle selectors to be in NEUTRAL & IDLE before starting.

Electrical System:

The boat features a 24/12 volt direct current (DC) electrical system powered by batteries, charged by an engine-driven alternator and/or AC converter. The main engine cranking batteries consist of two 8D 12-volt batteries connected in series for 24 volts. The generator has its own Group 27 12-volt battery. The AC system operates on a 240V/60 cycle, 50 amp shore power system. The manual details the locations and functions of main DC breaker panels, battery switches, fuse blocks, and circuit breakers. It also covers isolation transformers (with an optional IsoBoost Transformer) for shore power, which provide safety benefits and voltage regulation.

Control Station and Switch Layout:

The bridge control station includes switches for navigation lights, engine sync, trim tabs, spotlight, troll mode, horn, and various accessories. Gauges include engine monitoring systems (MMDS-LC), hour meters, tachometers, quad gauges (oil pressure, water temperature, voltmeter, fuel levels), and a magnetic compass. A Systems Monitor with an LCD display and audible alarm continuously monitors critical engine functions, generator oil pressure, bilge pumps, high water emergency bilge pumps, and bilge heat detection.

Safety Features:

  • Safety Labels: Located throughout the boat, these labels provide imperative safety precautions.
  • Legally Mandated Minimum Required Equipment: Includes Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) for each person, a throwable Type IV device, portable fire extinguishers (Type B-II ABC and Type B-I ABC), a loud sound signal device (whistle/horn), and visual distress signals for coastal waters/Great Lakes.
  • Automatic Fire Extinguishing System: Located in the engine compartment, it releases fire-extinguishing vapor upon heat detection. An indicator light on the dashboard shows system readiness and discharge status.
  • Carbon Monoxide (CO) Monitors: Mounted throughout the boat (forward stateroom, master stateroom, salon), these electronic instruments detect CO and alert occupants with a flashing DANGER light and alarm.
  • Emergency Stop Button: Located on the control station switch panel for immediate engine shutdown.
  • Load Capacity: Certification plate near the helm indicates maximum weight and number of persons under calm sea conditions.
  • Stability: Designed to specific stability and flotation standards. Adding equipment above deck or having loose fluids can reduce stability.
  • Warning Label Locations: Detailed diagrams show the placement of various warning labels on the boat.

Usage Features:

  • Preparing to Depart: Checklist includes weather forecast, passenger instruction, tool box, lines/fenders/anchor readiness, float plan, navigation charts, equipment storage, radio/navigation equipment check, bilge/engine compartment "sniff" test, bilge pump function, shore power cable disconnection, trim tab range of motion, fresh water tank fill, head system holding tank empty, seacocks open, fuel check, fluid levels check, coolant drain plugs secured, batteries charged, battery switches on, fuel valves open, engine alarm test, and gear shift/throttle controls in NEUTRAL/IDLE.
  • While Underway: Maintain safe seating for passengers, stow lines/fenders/anchor, use gradual acceleration/deceleration, be aware of surroundings, operate to prevent CO buildup, monitor weather, and adhere to navigational aids.
  • Returning to Port: Instruct passengers, have lines/fenders/anchor ready, turn off navigation lights, turn on anchor light if necessary, "sniff" bilge/engine compartment, run bilge blowers, check for water in bilge, run bilge pumps, bring gearshift/throttle controls to NEUTRAL/IDLE, idle engines for five minutes to cool down, and depress engine STOP switches.
  • Fueling the Boat: Fuel during daylight, have fire extinguisher ready, tie boat securely, ensure knowledgeable crew is present, keep unnecessary people off the boat, stop engines, power off electrical equipment, close hatches/doors, extinguish smoking materials, ground inboard tanks, use marked DIESEL filler pipe, use fuel nozzle in contact with filler pipe, avoid spills, and distribute fuel weight equally.
  • Boarding: Do not overload, board one person at a time, and provide assistance as needed.
  • Shifting to Drive the Boat: Use Mathers® gear shift and throttle engine controls. Always put gear selector in NEUTRAL before starting.
  • Anchoring: Bring bow into wind/current, lower anchor from bow, use 5-7 times water depth for anchor line.
  • Windlass: Automatically raises and lowers anchor, operated from helm or bow foot switches.
  • Bow/Stern Thruster: Electrically driven for enhanced maneuverability, activated by "THRUSTER MAIN 24V" switch and controlled by a joystick.
