1.1. ELECTRICAL SAFETY. p WARNING! It is the users responsibility to read, understand and comply with the following:
You must check all electrical equipment and appliances to ensure they are safe before using. You must inspect power supply leads, plugs and all
electrical connections for wear and damage. You must ensure the risk of electric shock is minimised by the installation of appropriate safety
devices. An RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) should be incorporated in the main distribution board. We also recommend that an RCD
(Residual Current Device) is used with all electrical products. It is particularly important to use an RCD together with portable products that are
plugged into an electrical supply not protected by an RCCB. If in doubt consult a professional electrician. You may obtain a Residual Current
Device by contacting your Sealey dealer. You must also read and understand the following instructions concerning electrical safety.
1.1.1. The Electricity At Work Act 1989 requires all portable electrical appliances, if used on a business premises, to be tested by
a qualified Electrician at least once a year by using a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT).
1.1.2. The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 makes owners of electrical appliances responsible for the safe condition of the appliance,
and the safety of the appliance operator. If in any doubt about electrical safety, contact a qualified electrician.
1.1.3. Ensure the insulation on all cables and the product itself is safe before connecting to the mains power
supply. See 1.1.1. & 1.1.2. above and use a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT).
1.1.4. Ensure that cables are always protected against short circuit and overload.
1.1.5. Regularly inspect power supply, leads, plugs and all electrical connections for wear and damage,
especially power connections, to ensure that none are loose.
1.1.6. Important: Ensure the voltage marked on the product is the same as the electrical power supply
to be used, and check that plugs are fitted with the correct capacity fuse. A 13Amp plug may require
a fuse smaller than 13Amps for certain products (subject to 1.1.10. below) see fuse rating at right.
1.1.7. DO NOT pull or carry the powered appliance by its power supply lead. Products such as
welders must not be pulled or carried by their output cables.
1.1.8. DO NOT pull power plugs from sockets by the power cable.
1.1.9. DO NOT use worn or damage leads, plugs or connections. Immediately replace or have repaired by
a qualified Electrician. A U.K. 3 pin plug with ASTA/BS approval is fitted. In case of damage, cut off
and fit a new plug according to the following instructions (discard old plug safely).
(UK only - see diagram at right). Ensure the unit is correctly earthed via a three-pin plug.
a) Connect the GREEN/YELLOW earth wire to the earth terminal E.
b) Connect the BROWN live wire to live terminal L.
c) Connect the BLUE neutral wire to the neutral terminal N.
After wiring, check there are no bare wires, that all wires have been correctly connected and that the wire restraint is tight.
Double insulated products are often fitted with live (BROWN) and neutral (BLUE) wires only
. Double insulated products are always marked with
this symbol . To re-wire, connect the brown & blue wires as indicated above. DO NOT connect the brown or blue to the earth terminal.
1.1.10. Some products require more than a 13Amp electrical supply. In such a case, NO plug will be fitted. You must contact a qualified Electrician
to
ensure a 30 amp fused supply is available. We recommend you discuss the installation of a industrial round pin plug & socket with your electrician.
1.1.11. Cable extension reels. When a cable extension reel is used it should be fully unwound before connection. A cable reel with an RCD
fitted is recommended since any product which is plugged into the cable reel will be protected. The section of the cable on the cable
reel is important. We recommend that at least 1.5mm
2
section cable but to be absolutely sure that the capacity of the cable reel is
suitable for this product and for others that may be used in the other output sockets, we recommend the use of 2.5mm

Overview

This document provides instructions for the Sealey SB951 and SB972 Shot Blasting Cabinets, designed for various workshop and bodyshop cleaning applications.

Function Description:

The shot blasting cabinets are constructed of steel with a replaceable viewing screen and internal illumination. They are fitted with a shot blasting gun and are suitable for proprietary brands of glass beads only. The units are designed to clean workpieces by continuously moving blast media over them in an even and circular motion. The work finish can vary from coarse to fine depending on the size of the abrasive media used. For delicate workpieces, blasting should begin with a lesser airflow to avoid unnecessary peening or excessive abrasion. The cabinets require a standard, dry workshop air supply for operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

Model SB951:

  • Max Air Pressure: 90 PSI
  • Max CFM: 4.5 - 7 cfm
  • Air Inlet Size: 1/4"
  • Length/Width/Height: 580 x 480 x 490 mm
  • Door Size: 540 x 440 mm

  • Length/Width/Height: 760 x 510 x 710 mm
  • Door Size: 570 x 280 mm
  • Abrasive Media Capacity: 40 lbs

Both models require a 13 Amp FUSE for electrical supply. The SB972 model can be either bench or floor mounted on an optional SB972/STAND.

Usage Features:

  • Electrical Safety: Users must ensure all electrical equipment and appliances are safe before use. This includes inspecting power supply leads, plugs, and all electrical connections for wear and damage. The risk of electric shock should be minimized by installing appropriate safety devices, such as an RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) or an RCD (Residual Current Device). All portable electrical appliances used in a business premises must be tested by a qualified Electrician at least once a year using a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT). The voltage marked on the product must match the electrical power supply, and plugs must be fitted with the correct capacity fuse. For UK users, a 3-pin plug with ASTA/BS approval is fitted, and the unit must be correctly earthed.
  • Air Supply: Before connecting to the air supply, ensure the air valve is in the "off" position. The unit requires an air pressure of 90 PSI and an air volume of 4.5 - 7 cfm. The air supply must not exceed 100 PSI, as excessive pressure can shorten product life and cause damage or injury. The air supply must be clean and dry, with the air supply tank drained daily to prevent water damage. The air inlet filter screen should be cleaned weekly. For optimal performance, line pressure should be increased for unusually long air hoses (over 8 meters), with a minimum hose diameter of 10mm I.D. and fittings of the same inside dimensions. Hoses should be kept away from heat, oil, and sharp edges, and connections must be secure. The cleaner's input connection is 1/4" BSP.
  • Installation: After unpacking and checking contents, any damaged or missing parts should be reported immediately. An appropriate coupling suitable for the air system connects the air supply to the inlet on the right-hand side of the cabinet and the gun. All fittings should be checked for leaks, and the media supply hose must be tightly attached to the underside of the gun. Abrasive media should be placed in the center of the cabinet, not exceeding the stated amounts, as excessive media can impair visibility, reduce blasting performance, and block the air exhaust.
  • Operation: Before use, users must read, understand, and apply all safety instructions. Once installation is complete, the workpiece is placed in the cabinet, and the lid is securely closed and latched. Failure to securely close the lid can result in damage or personal injury. The light and air supply are then turned on. Hands are inserted into the cabinet gloves to grasp the gun and depress the trigger to start blasting. If no flow is achieved, momentarily covering the gun nozzle can clear the tube.
  • General Safety: Users must adhere to health and safety, government, and local authority regulations related to shot blasting. The cabinet should be maintained in good condition, with damaged parts replaced using genuine parts only. The cabinet should be located in an adequate, clean, tidy, and well-lit working area, free from unrelated materials. Only dry abrasives, such as glass bead (Sealey item B5KG), should be used; harsh abrasives like aluminum oxide, blasting garnet, or sand, or any fluids, should not be used. Approved eye, face, and ear protection must always be worn. The unit lid must be kept closed and secured during use. The blast nozzle should always be directed at the workpiece, and never used outside the unit. The exhaust vent at the back of the cabinet must be regularly checked to ensure it is clear and not blocked. Good balance and footing should be maintained, and the floor kept clean from grit spillage. Ill-fitting clothing, ties, watches, rings, and other loose jewelry should be removed or contained, and long hair tied back. Children and non-essential persons should be kept away from the working area. A dust-free light tube, not greater than 70 Watts, should be used. The cabinet should not be forced to perform tasks it was not designed for, operated if any parts are damaged or missing, or operated with the lid open. It should not be stood on, gotten wet, used in damp or wet locations, or operated when the user is tired or under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or intoxicating medication. The cabinet should not be left operating unattended, and must be disconnected from electrical mains and air power supply when not in use.

Maintenance Features:

  • Disconnection: Before any maintenance, the cabinet must be disconnected from the electrical mains and the air supply.
  • Media Condition: Ensure the blasting media does not become damp by keeping the air supply dry at all times. Damp media should be disposed of. Media should be replaced when it becomes excessively dusty, loses its granular or spherical appearance, or mixes with debris from workpieces, which is typically indicated by the nozzle media appearing as a smoke cloud rather than steam.
  • Exhaust Vent: The exhaust vent at the back of the cabinet must be regularly checked to ensure it is clear and not blocked.
  • Gun Nozzle: The gun blast nozzle should be regularly checked for blockages and immediately replaced if worn or damaged.
  • Abrasive Pick-up Hose: If the abrasive pick-up hose becomes blocked, re-power the unit, ensure the lid is correctly closed, cover the gun tip, and force air back through the hose to clear any media.
  • Transparent Screen: The transparent screen on the underside of the lid should be replaced if visibility is reduced.
  • Internal Light: The internal cabinet light can be replaced with a dust-free light tube not greater than 70 Watts.
