Overview

The Sears Automatic Set-Back/Set-Up Thrif-T Thermostat, Model No. 387.910100, is designed for both heating-only and heating/cooling applications in residential settings. This precision instrument combines temperature control with a quartz timer to automatically adjust room temperature to pre-set points throughout a 24-hour period, offering energy savings and enhanced comfort.

Function Description:

The thermostat's primary function is to regulate room temperature based on user-defined settings and a programmable 24-hour quartz timer. It allows for automatic "set-back" (lower temperature) and "set-up" (higher temperature) periods, with the capability to program up to three set-back/set-up periods every 24 hours. This feature is particularly useful for maintaining different temperature levels during occupied and unoccupied times, or for adjusting temperatures between day and night.

For heating systems, the thermostat includes an adjustable heat anticipator, which can be set from 0.15 to 1.0 amps. This anticipator helps to provide closer room temperature regulation by preventing wide temperature swings, thus improving comfort. A fixed cooling anticipator is also integrated, operating within a range of 0 to 1.5 amps at 30V max.

The device features a system switch (COOL, OFF, HEAT) and a fan switch (AUTO, ON). In heating/cooling systems, the fan switch is typically set to "AUTO" to cycle the fan with the heating or cooling system. Setting it to "ON" provides continuous air circulation. For heating-only applications, switch pins are installed during installation to prevent accidental selection of "COOL" or "ON" fan modes, ensuring the fan operates only when the furnace is heating.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Voltage: 24 Volt AC, 60 Hz (30V Max.).
  • Current (Heating): 0.15 Amps to 1.0 Amps.
  • Current (Cooling): 0 to 1.0 Amps.
  • System Compatibility:
    • 24 volt A.C. two-wire Heating-Only systems.
    • 24 volt A.C. four-wire or five-wire Heating-Cooling systems.
  • Incompatibility:
    • Millivolt systems (self-generating systems without a transformer or relay).
    • Three-wire zone valve systems.
    • Heat pump systems.
    • Two-stage heat or cool systems.
    • Electric heating systems where the blower comes on "IMMEDIATELY" when the thermostat calls for heat (i.e., fan is energized by a separate FAN RELAY).
  • Timer Power Source: Replaceable Sears "AA" Die Hard Alkaline battery.

Usage Features:

  • Programmable Timer: The 24-hour quartz timer allows users to program up to three distinct set-back/set-up periods per day. Time selectors (red for set-up/high temperature, blue for set-back/low temperature) are easily removable and re-installable to adjust programming. Two additional sets of selectors are stored inside the thermostat cover for added flexibility.
  • Temperature Levers: Independent temperature levers with red and blue lines in the cover slot allow for setting high and low desired temperatures. The difference between these settings determines the amount of set-back or set-up.
  • System and Fan Switches: Clearly labeled switches for selecting system mode (COOL, OFF, HEAT) and fan operation (AUTO, ON) provide intuitive control.
  • Thermometer: A thermometer on the front cover displays the current room temperature.
  • Easy Installation: Designed to replace most existing 24-volt heating or heating-cooling thermostats with minimal wiring changes. Specific instructions are provided for two-wire heating-only, four-wire, and five-wire heating/cooling systems.
  • Wire Labels: Self-adhesive wiring labels are provided to ensure correct wire identification during installation, simplifying the process.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: The 24-hour timer is powered by a replaceable "AA" alkaline battery. Instructions are provided for removing the old battery and installing a new one, ensuring the timer's continuous operation. A cardboard strip is inserted during shipment to prevent battery drain, which must be removed to start the timer.
  • Heat Anticipator Adjustment: The adjustable heat anticipator can be fine-tuned to match the current draw of the furnace control, allowing for optimal temperature regulation and comfort. This adjustment helps to prevent short cycling or long "ON" times.
  • Thermometer Calibration: The manual provides a procedure for calibrating the thermostat's thermometer if its reading does not match an accurate external thermometer, ensuring precise temperature display.
  • Repair Parts Availability: All listed repair parts are available through Sears, Roebuck and Co. retail or catalog stores, with specific part numbers and descriptions provided for easy ordering. This includes components like the cover, battery, thermostat, timer, anticipator, subbase, and time selectors.
