Overview

The Craftsman Router, Model No. 315.17361, is a versatile woodworking tool designed for both professional and amateur use, engineered to deliver years of trouble-free performance with precision and ease. This double-insulated router eliminates the need for a three-wire grounded power cord and supply system, enhancing safety by providing two complete sets of insulation to protect the user. All exposed metal parts are isolated from internal motor components with protective insulation.

Function Description

The primary function of the Craftsman Router is to perform various cutting and shaping operations on wood and other suitable materials. It achieves this by rapidly spinning a specialized cutter bit, allowing users to create decorative edges, grooves, dados, and other intricate designs. The router's design emphasizes user safety and operational efficiency, making it suitable for a wide range of woodworking tasks, from simple trimming to complex joinery.

Usage Features

The router is designed for straightforward operation, with several features aimed at enhancing user experience and precision:

  • Cutter Installation and Removal: Cutters are installed by inserting the shank into the collet until it is within 1/8 inch of the bottom. The output shaft is held by depressing a locking lever, and the collet nut is securely tightened with the provided wrench. To remove, the collet nut is loosened, and if the cutter doesn't slip out easily, continued loosening will cause the nut to press against the collet ring, forcing the cutter out. It's crucial to use cutters with a 1/4-inch diameter shank, as undersized cutters can damage the precision-machined collet. Always disconnect the router from the power supply before servicing or changing cutters.

  • Depth of Cut Adjustments: The depth of cut can be precisely adjusted to suit various materials and cutter sizes. For small diameter cutters on softwoods, the depth can be maximized. However, for larger cutters on hardwoods, it is recommended to make multiple passes, with each cut not exceeding 1/8 inch, to reach the desired depth. Adjustments are made by placing the router on a flat surface, loosening the lock knob (A), and manually raising or lowering the motor unit to the desired setting on the scale. Each graduation on the scale represents a 1/32-inch increase or decrease in depth. The lock knob (A) must be securely tightened before operation, especially if the router is used in an inverted position. Always disconnect the router from the power supply before making depth adjustments.

  • Eyeshield: A clear plastic eyeshield is installed on the front of the router to protect the user's eyes from debris. It can be easily removed by pressing on each end and pulling away from the router, and replaced by pressing on the ends and placing it into the opening until the tabs hold it in place.

  • Safety Guidelines: The manual emphasizes several rules for safe operation, including knowing the power tool, keeping guards in place, maintaining a clean work area, avoiding dangerous environments (damp/wet locations, rain), keeping children away, storing idle tools securely, not forcing the tool, using the right tool for the job, wearing proper apparel (no loose clothing or jewelry), using safety glasses (and face/dust mask for cutting operations), not abusing the cord, securing work with clamps or a vise, maintaining proper footing and balance, maintaining tools with care, disconnecting tools when not in use or before servicing, removing adjusting keys/wrenches before turning on, avoiding accidental starting, and using outdoor-suitable extension cords when necessary.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is key to ensuring the longevity and optimal performance of the Craftsman Router:

  • Cutter Care: Keeping cutters clean and sharp is essential for faster and more accurate cutting results. Accumulated pitch and gum can be removed with kerosene. When sharpening, only the inside of the cutting edge should be sharpened, and the outside diameter should never be ground. If sharpening the end of a cutter, ensure the clearance angle matches the original grind. A cutter sharpening kit (Cat. # 25169) is available from Sears.

  • Brush Replacement: To replace brushes, disconnect the router from the power supply. Remove three screws and lift the end cap. Lift the brush tube enough to bend out tabs and remove the brush assembly. Insert a new brush assembly, bend the tab to hold it in place, and replace the brush tube. Ensure bend reliefs on the cord are correctly located and no wires contact the motor before replacing the end cap and screws.

  • Power Cord Replacement: Disconnect the router from the power supply. Remove the end cap, two screws, and the cord clamping plate. Note the location of leads and connections: the white lead of the power cord connects to the white lead from the motor, and the black lead of the power cord connects to the black lead of the switch. Remove the wire connectors, place the bend relief on the new cord, make the necessary lead connections, and position the cord for clamping. Replace the cord clamping plate and tighten its screws, then locate the bend relief properly and replace the end cap and screws.

  • Switch Replacement: Disconnect the router from the power supply. Remove the end cap. Note lead locations: the black lead of the switch connects to the black lead of the cord, and the white lead of the switch connects to the black lead from the motor. Remove wire connectors, then the switch lever and arm assembly, noting the loading spring's location. Replace the old switch with a new one, make lead connections, ensure the loading spring is in place, and properly locate the switch lever and arm assembly over the switch. Arrange leads to prevent pinching before replacing the end cover and screws.

  • Lubrication: All bearings in this tool are pre-lubricated with a high-grade lubricant sufficient for the unit's life under normal operating conditions. Therefore, no further lubrication is required.

  • General Care: Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts, as most plastics are susceptible to damage from commercial solvents. Use clean cloths to remove dirt, carbon dust, etc. If the tool is used on fiberglass materials, frequent cleaning with an air jet is recommended to prevent accelerated wear and premature failure caused by abrasive fiberglass chips and grindings.

  • Double Insulation System Servicing: Servicing a double-insulated tool requires extreme care and knowledge. It should only be performed by a qualified service technician, preferably at a Sears Store, using original factory replacement parts to maintain the integrity of the double insulation system.

The Craftsman Router is a robust and reliable tool, designed for safe and effective use, with clear instructions for both operation and maintenance to ensure its long-term performance.
